World's Cleanest VW Corrado VR6 - One take

This 1994 Volkswagen Corrado is, without hyperbole, the cleanest example I've ever seen. It looks practically new in the very rare purple/black combo. Making approximately 220 horsepower from its modified VR6 engine and weighing in around 2,700 lbs, the Corrado was the luxury hot-hatch the world wasn't ready for in the 90's, and a sky-high price tag kept it from selling in huge numbers. Now, as a throwback collectible, we can judge the Corrado on its own merits instead of against the competition in the market and find it's just a fantastic little driver's car.
Check out Stuart's site here with lots more photos and info about the Corrado!

Had a '5 year old 94 Golf VR6 in Aus for 5 years. - Post switch-off thermo fans would trigger the alarm - Fuel starve below 1/3 tank level going around right hand corners (roundabouts in Aus) - multiple busted elec window mechanisms - euro spec low springs had me crushing sump (only once) - unsecured pod filter (previous owner) chewed through HP fuel line on summer's day - front cross member cracked both ends - driveshafts keeping it together (pregnant wife driving at the time, mechanic jumped from underneath it once he saw the issue) - heater core split, prompting trade in on a.... Camry wagon... the positives? - the sound - driveline never felt fragile - busy highway motoring with lots of overtaking - two sensational hill climbs on the way to visit family once a month - wife loved driving down the main street with the noise, but having two baby seats in the back - great bucket seats It was a really fun car but it stretched our patience, as you can see by the replacement vehicle (but was also a manual)

The KLZE is a JDM engine, not available in US spec cars. They are a 2.5L DOHC V6 that make 200HP at the flywheel. The version we got have the KLDE or KL03. Same displacement, less compression smaller cams, different intake manifold and various emissions changes. They were rated at 164HP. And came in the MX-6 and 93-97 Probe GT. The car you drove in New Zealand had a KFZE. Which is a de-stroked KLZE. Rated at about 170HP. But the Probe was beating all comers in 93 when it debuted. Including Integra GSR. You need to find a clean, KLZE swapped 2nd gen Probe GT. Perfect canyon car when built right.

They were discounting the Corrado. I remember when I bought my 92 GTI 16v they STILL had some G60 91 and 92's languishing for only about $1000 more than my new GTI. Events VR6 was often sold for 20 grand or right under. Lots of electrical gremlins, these can hundred and thousand dollar you to death. But so fun! I convinced a friend to buy one that was pre owned, a 92 with 18k miles for about 18 grand in 1993 at a local dealer. I loved to drive it. I still have my 2 liter 16 valve GTI.. it Screams, too. Less issues, less power accessories inside the MK2.

KLZE mentioned while driving a VR6 Corrado, awesome! My 2 favorite fwd engines. That Lantis had a smaller Mazda v6. The little white car (New Zealand I think?) had a KLZE in it. I'd offer my Probe GT for a drive but I'm nowhere near Matt and I may have to replace my oil pump. Many thousands of miles shifting at 7k on a 23 year old engine and things will break eventually.

Garage kept, and I have paperwork dating back to 2002 for every repair, change or modification done to the car since it was bought by the previous owner at 6,175mi. Features neuspeed upper strut bar, neuspeed intake and low temp sensor on the radiator fan. Mine even has the original hood insulating engine foam. Cup holders. I got a solution but only works with bigger cups. I had a '91 G60, when I got it is was missing the rear seat ashtray. I discovered that opening worked perfectly as a cup holder. Even from the front seat it was fairly easy to reach. I never had issues with it falling over either, but never drove it on a road like that with a cup in there. Even when I did get a new ashtray there I would still pop it out and use that as cup holder if needed. Thought as former Corrado owner I would share that.

Awesome car! Love the Corrado since day one and always wanted to have one! BTW I did own a Mazda MX-6, is very rare to hear anybody mentioning it at all. One of the most under appreciated cars ever, I hated selling mine! A few nuggets about the MX-6: 1. Had better brakes than the Porsche 911 of the same year 2. The KLM engine was bench tested by Mazda and after 300 k miles and a second check after 700k miles the piston sleeves were intact no wear whatsoever in piston heads or sleeves, they actually had the machining pattern intact! 3. There was a version with 4 wheel steering 4. The VRIS system was tune to open at ~2700 RPM and the second stage at ~4700 RPM. At both stages you will get an awesome kick of acceleration from the engine. The only other manufacturer that I know that mess around with Variable Resonance Induction Systems was Porsche. There was plenty of power and speed in the MX-6 and the exhaust had a sweet sound 5. If you were a winter driver in one of this you have to be both skillful and mindful. This car will hold to the road but when you start getting the feedback of the tail getting loose it was toooo late and the car will bite you and send you in a spin. Other than that never feel any vises in the car was extremely well behave. 6. There was a smaller version of the V6 engine (1.8 lt) which was used in the MX-3. Another unappreciated Mazda car! 7. MX stands for Mazda eXperiment I hope that one day you can review one.

Matt asked why nobody bought Corrados. The simple answer to this (in Europe) was, that the insurance for the 'Rado was quite high. I've heard of people paying Porsche 911 money to insure that thing in the early days. Also the Golf G60 and Polo G40 were more popular, affordable and practiacal cars. Some fun facts about Corrado: - The Corrado is the successor to the Scirocco MK2, which had a rubber Spoiler on the trunk lid. That's why all Corrado's had an electrik spoiler on the trunklid that automaticly would raise up, when the car was going a certain speed. -The Corrado was built in the same factory as the Scirocco was. - The 94 model (which is shown in this video) is considered a facelift. Most notable changes were on the bumper at the foglight area and interior bits. The General apperance remained however unchanged.

Wow back in time. Late 1989 I drove a new 1990 red G60 Corrado. I almost bought it. I loved everthing about the Corrado but instead I bought a house. And again in the late 90s I could have had a green 1993 Corrado SLC but by then I was looking for 911 & bought a 94 911 C4 wide body. The Corrado was a great car.

KLZE was in the JDM MX-6 and 626 and many others. KLDE was in the US MX-6, 626, and second gen Ford Probe GT V6 and is a 2.5L V6, but down on power a bit. KLZE swaps are common. It was fun to take out Hondas in my Probe when you hit the upper revs and the VRIS system kicked in. The car would get a nice little surge in power in the upper revs and people would ask if it "had VTEC".

I don't think the KLZE came in the Probe GT. However, many owners used to import the KLZE and put them in the GTs.

Got mine for $600 bucks, where else are you going to do a JDM swap that cheap . MAF swap and 2.5" exhaust adds a little more power.

It's a Mazda engine regardless of the logo, you can get a VC for $5 at a junkyard.

Clyde Frog the KLZE wasn't available in Canada/US, only the KLDE. The DE was better for boost because of the lower compression. Both were 2.5L, Matt was incorrect in the video.

Kicking myself so much, we had a corrado VR6 at my high school and it needed like a water pump and just sat forever until our new teacher asked me to pull the engine and I agreed, not knowing at the time how rare they were. It was so fuckin clean 😣

When I was 16 I was trying to get a ride home from a party and I saw a guy standing next to a Corrado. I asked him what it was and he told me and it turned out he was going my way so he offered me a ride home. Holy crap. He might have hit 125 at one point. He was off throttle drifting, just to scare the crap out of me. I was sure I would die. Now I’m 29 and I want one so bad.

I'm a former VR6 12v owner myself. Amazing sound, fun to drive, but as far as modifying (especially NA) that cylinder head is such a bottleneck. The later 24v heads flowed better. The 24v cars also have a more modern ignition system, which is nice because the shitty 12v coilpack cracks and sucks in wet climates. I did have a great experience with the engine itself, for me it was very reliable mechanically. Electronically, NIGHTMARE!

Matt and Stewart. Very good video of the Corrado VR6 SLC. My ex and I used to own a 1995/97 Passat GLX VR6 w/ 5-Spd and 4-Spd Automatic. It brings the memory of what glorious VR6 engine sound makes. However, I'm disappointed with both of you for saying that the VR6 is a V6. VR6 is never ever a V6. A VR6 - Verkürzt Reihen Sechs - Shortened InLine Six. An IL6 is notoriously known for its long crankshaft length and its high bending moments. Thus a VR6 was born, which has the same characteristic of an IL6, but with a shorter crankshaft length and lower bending moments. Its similarity like the 6-crank throws, 6-crank pins, 7-main crankshaft bearings, 1-cylinder head and valve cover, 2-camshafts, 120° even firing. Every cylinder has its own crank-pin and crank-throw. Unlike a VR6 a V6 has 3-crank throws, 3-crank pins, 4-main crankshaft bearings, 2-cylinder heads and valve covers, 4-camshafts for a DOHC config., or 2-camshafts for a SOHC config. or 1-camshaft for an OHV config. Basically, double the number of parts. The 60° has 120° even firing order. While a 90° with a split-crankpin has 120° even firing order. However, 90° with solid crank-pin has uneven alternating 120° & 150° firing order. Every 2-cylinder share a common or a split crank-pin/crank-throws. A V6 is not naturally balanced engine but vibration can be eliminated with a pair of counter rotating balance shafts or counterweight.

This is now one of my favorite videos of yours for a few reasons 1. Awesome car that is super clean and sounds amazing 2. This dude has the same name as I do, and he's pretty awesome for wanting you to romp on it 3. You shouted out the KL series! I daily drive a Mazda 626 with the KL-G4 w/ 5speed manual, doesn't rev as high but still sounds wonderful! Made me smile hearing that you're a fan of the sounds I hear every day, seriously made my day better :D /ramble As always, thanks for providing the best car content on youtube cheers
