I am so grateful that this positive representation exists for my daughter. We accept the love we think we deserve, and positive representation like this goes a long way in helping a young person believe that they deserve a good partner who loves them and treats them well. In the bloopers for the show, Olivia forgot her lines during “Nick’s coming out” scene, she was crying and said “I’m just overwhelmed by your little face” Kit Connor is a phenomenal actor and he portrayed Nick’s vulnerability so well, and he played this part to the T and it made me cry seeing how natural he did it. Most people are stiff and very robotic in how they move and perform vulnerable characters or you can just see how they’ve separated themselves from it. Kit dove in and left everyone in tears, including an incredible actress like Olivia who has been in the industry longer. ❤ can’t wait to see what Kit does in the future!

I love how Elle doesn't fall victim to the typical trauma and body disphoria storyline that trans characters, specifically trans people of color, seem to always face. Obviously trans teens face those issues, but they also face other teenage-related situations, such as crushes, friendships, and grades. The character of Elle is a self-loving teen in a all-girl private school who faces a struggling friend group, new friends, and a crush. And she also happens to be black and trans

I keep seeing people being like "I'm not gonna watch this show because not every gay person experiences love like nick and charlie" and all I keep thinking is...... yeah, but that doesn't stop it from being cute and nice representation. Gay stories consistently have depressing stories filled with homophobia, erasure of most of the LGBTQIA+ community, and them killing themselves. This story, while, yes, has homophobia, it isn't the main focus, but instead, a healthy and lovely story of two people who find eachother and fall in love. I had never heard of Heartstopper. Watched the whole thing in one go. LOVED it. So I will 100% be reading the graphic novels. I was looking somethings up and heard they changed a couple things but almost all adaptions of anything do. I really really liked it. I loved that we got a clear comparison of a toxic secret relationship and a healthy one. I love that there was drama between them but none of it was from them mistreating the other or being cruel. It was all understandable, relatable, heartfelt, sweet, sad, happy all at once. I thought it was really well done. I will say Tao sort of annoyed me at first, I found him very whiny and overdramatic but he grew on me. I will say Isaac (who if I'm correct was not in the novels) was probably the most like me in school. I seemed to always be finding out about everything but also staying out of it all at the same time and while I loved and opened up to my friends, stuck to myself a bit with my nose in a book. I related to nick's confusion. I'm bi-romantic and asexual. I will say I didn't know about asexuality until college. I always just thought something was broken. I had a bit of trauma from an abusive relationship when I was 14/15 so I thought my aversion to sex might be from that but I realized I didn't understand a lot of things others experienced and friends telling me about how they experience felt so different than how I experienced it. I just thought I was broken, and then in college I heard the term at an LGBT+ group, stayed up late, researching on the internet, takings quizzes, so that was fun to see shown, even if he was younger and questioning a different sexuality. The bi thing I figured out in high school but funny enough me being ace and not knowing propelled me figuring it out. I figured since I didn't seem to want to do too much with guys I was with, I thought maybe I was a lesbian. My first girlfriend was great, I fell very hard for her but when things started to get more physical, I once again just felt like I was pressuring myself and I lost interest. Just like I did dating the guys. I knew I had really feelings for her though. Just like I knew I had feelings for guys previously. so i just called myself Bisexual and figured something was wrong or broken in me when it came to the physical stuff until college. I've had people, when I come out to them, get annoyed with all the "labels" but I think, as long as we don't force labels onto others or be intolerant of them, sometimes the label can help. I know when I learned what asexuality was and realized this was what I was, it became, "Oh I'm not broken, I'm not weird, I'm just a bi ace. cool." Now, I've still never met another asexual in person, or knowingly at least, but even talking to other asexuals online and joking around about being blatantly confused all our lives by the majority of advertisements has helped amazingly in feel less alone. And I 100% didn't mean to get this in depth. Just meant, I really liked it. It was nice to see LGBT+ representation shown in an optimistic, healthy, fun way.
@GavinReadsItAll2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing your story, honestly it was so nice to read, though I do sympathise with some of your past traumas (and so sorry to hear about the abusive relationship). I agree re: labels. I feel as long as we are comfortable with ourselves and the labels we give ourselves, it's fine. But love that you have other asexuals to talk to online to feel less alone, this world is filled with so many different people and it can be life-changing to connect with people like us. I hope you're in a good place now and happy ❤

The only “complaint” I have with the show is I wish the bathroom scene with Tao and Charlie was more accurate to the graphic novel. It would’ve shown some vulnerability in Tao’s character apart from when he’s with Elle. It was still good, but I wish he was shown to be more vulnerable with Charlie since they’ve been friends for so long.
@mia-yf8pz2 жыл бұрын
Ye cause in the graphic novel it comes across more as Tao just being really worried about Charlie and his safety and in the show there’s a bit more anger and annoyance. Still like Tao though 😊

Years ago, I had a friend come out to me in high school. I related so hard to that moment with the mom in Heartstopper when her son came out, and she tells him, I wish you felt safe or comfortable enough to have come out to me sooner. I remember it so vividly, I had no real reaction other than to say "okay," and we just continued on with our friendship because he was the same person the day before and the day after. I could tell though that he was relieved because I later found out how bad it had been for him---pretending to be straight, pretending to be this macho guy so others wouldn't find out, lying all day long, and the bullying he was getting from a lot of the guys at school which I felt like I had been so stupidly blind to because he "wasn't gay," and never said anything, never talked about it, and he always gave as much as he got, so I thought it was guys being guys. Watching this show was really like reliving high school but actually seeing what the reality must have been like for him. He was thankfully lucky and brave enough all those years ago to live his truth, and though he was scared AF, he came to prom with a date (and my school managed not to freak out about it which was miraculous if you knew my school).

I had to pause the video to comment on what you said about coming out last to your dad because his opinion mattered to you. That's something a lot of cishet people need to understand. Like you, I came out to my parents last. Not even fully of my own free will. I made the decision, but only because I felt I had no choice in that moment. I remember them angry when they realized everyone else knew. They asked why I didn't tell them before, if it was because I didn't trust them. I think that was one of the things that hurt me the most of that conversation, because I felt like they were so fixated on their feelings they weren't able to understand my own. They couldn't see why I'd be so nervous about telling them. I don't get why cishet people can't understand that, I think it makes so much sense.

Heartstopper is one of my favorite graphic novels (and webcomics in general, and let me tell you I've read a LOT). Not only because it is basically a fulfillment of all my fantasies as a gay teen around the same age with the same romantic perspective but also because I started reading it around the time that I was thinking on coming out (2020) publicly, like, not hiding it and if I had anything gay to say or be then just be aside from just coming out to friends or family. It showed me that while I may suffer from people disliking me just for liking men, or that I may suffer my own struggles because of being out, at least I will find other people like me, and I will at least be a little bit happier. To be honest I still struggle, I still am the only very openly non-heterosexual guy that I know in my school which bursts me with feelings of loneliness and misunderstanding (Even if I have plenty of lesbian friends and bi girl friends), but seeing Heartstopper made me think that one day it won't be like that, and that one day I'll meet someone, a guy, and we'll just click like that, and be able to feel the way the comic and the show made me feel and I'll be able to do all of the things I have only been able to wish. It is amazing that Heartstopper exists and that more people are getting to know it, I am truly so, so happy.

I checked the show and I'm so glad I did. I found the characters (particularly our two leads, Nick and Charlie) very engaging, seeing how vulnerable and all the emotional baggage they're carrying was very engaging. I'm obsessed with Heartstopper, both the show and graphic novels, it's become my life now!

this show is such a beautiful representation of how to adapt a book to a show well and it is so clear that the thing that made that possible was having the Alice Oseman be so involved in the entire process (it also means the changes made feel so much more understandable because you know Alice helped make them)! i hope we’re able to see more adaptation like this in the future!

I love how this show is so full of role models for everyone! Sure, for queer people especially, but for young people in general to stand up for themselves and their friends, for boys and men of all ages to be allow for showing their feelings as much as Nick, for families... I'm going to be a mum in autumn and watching nicks mum be there for him while giving him all the space he needs is just so beautiful and makes me look forward to try and do the same thing. Watching him confide in her as almost the first person is also so heartwarming because its often said that teenagers stop confiding in their parents. Not necessarily I hope. If you give them space, trust them and let them grow up then maybe... Well, I'll try my best. So, there's hope and encouragement for everyone in this show and everyone should watch it!
