Technically, Belgorod wasn't a totally new sub. Her initial construction was slated to be a regular variant of the Oscar II SSGN, but construction was halted in 1997, and after losing the Kursk, the Russian commanders opted to have her restarted, but with a different purpose. In the Oscar hull design, they found what they thought would be a perfect platform for a special mission submarine. The firepower she can put down is absolutely frightening, and the worst part, is she doesn't even have to go far from home to do it.

My gosh beam for a boat at least is way more important, sq cube law, a 30' pleasure boat with a 8'6" compared to a 10'6" beam is HUGE. Love the videos, came over from sub brief, and share as well. Keep up great work.

How long is the missile compartment on a ballistic missile submarine?

depends on the size of the missiles and how many it is carriyng

Great stuff. My only comment is: The tone of the “piano” notes in the intro is so loud and so sharp it causes pain for earbud users. It’s a common new channel problem. You probably don’t have an audio equalizer and, most important, a compressor running. The best approach is to tone everything to midrange and look at your audio track visually to be sure it’s level.

How much lead weight has to be added to a sub while being build to make it sink?
@BartJBols3 жыл бұрын
While being built not a lot, depends on if they finished making the hull airtight yet or not.

i was gonna ask for the years in operation of these but I think these are all still running? i scoffed at you in a previous video about having a quantum computer aboard a sub. i think/hope machine learning is what you meant and no, that will all happen on the ground

Same reason Soviet aircraft and other hardware were bigger. They were always a decade or two behind in the miniaturization of technology.
@scytales25483 жыл бұрын
@@JaegerMatthias There are countless Soviet airplanes and other hardware that were less big than their closest Western equivalents - modern Soviet main battle tanks (MBTs) to begin with (T-64, T-72, T-80). As Mr Sutton explains to the point in his video, the size of a submarine is dictated by the technical requirements to achieve its main missions. Notice how, in the video, the biggest subs (by length) are special mission submarines onto another significantly big submarine has to dock. That is - the mother submarine must have the space to dock and safely lock the other submarine, but it must also kept its balancing when carrying the other subs. Plus, the mother sub must house its own crew as well as the crew of the other submarine. Hence the sheer size of this kind of sub, notably the length. Actually, with the exception of the 941 Typhoon class SSBN, notice how the US Ohio class SSBN is larger and bigger than all the other Soviet SSBN classes. This sole observation do very contradict your explanation about miniaturization. The reason why the Typhoon is so large is all about survivability features, ability the break thick ice canopy and, it must not be under-looked, crew comfort during very long underway cruise. If you compare the main US Los Angeles class nuclear attack submarine (SSN) to the main Soviet SSN of the same era (the Victor series), you will find that there are roughly the same size. At the same time, the Soviet even design a significantly smaller SSN, the Alfa class. Yes, the late Soviet Akula class SSN is bigger than the Los Angeles, but it is also roughly the same size as the US Seawolf class SSN. The reason this two classes of SSN are bigger are that they carry almost twice the weapon load than earlier generation SSNs and more equipment.

@@JaegerMatthias and yet they have automation that Western subs dont....hhmmm. Soviets and Russians make their subs bigger to handle a greater variety of missions, better survivability etc
