When did SANSKRIT appear in India? | The GENETIC Evidence

A topic that stirs up controversy in India is the development of Indo-Aryan languages, and specifically the idea that speakers of an early form of Sanskrit arrived in India between 2000 and 1500 BCE. While the linguistic argument is probably the strongest for the theory of an Indo-Aryan migration into South Asia, genetic evidence gathered so far supports it. In this video, other theories like the Aryan Invasion Theory and the Out of India Theory will be examined, along with the claims of Abhijit Chavda concerning the genetic evidence for or against migration of this language group into India.

Actullay the lament is not false - we were taught history (and didn't want to know). However most of it was sanitized history, that didn't deal with facts. It was meant not to offend anyone and was meant for creating social harmony -I am talking of 25 years after independence. Now from what I believe, is much worse. History is learnt by research, there rarely is a single good source that you can use becasuse all authors have their biases. Even on this thread you see people passionately arguing with absurd claims. There are very few unimpeachable sources and even they may not have covered a particular aspect. This is not an easy subject to master -- and the history of the world is intertwined and few know the whole spectrum.

They are not looking to contest the PM's seat or lead a coalition, they are just looking for votes. One could argue that these parties are trying to keep more locally accountable politicians in Parliament, in order to increase advocacy for local issues, but when they use racism to get votes it is clear that most of this is just a grab for power.

The ancient world shared geographical boundaries with our modern world, but doesn’t mean they shared our political boundaries. Northern India may have been more influenced by trade routes which would have brought them access to wealth and knowledge exchange. This could have provided a significant advantage to Northern Indian power brokers helping them expand their influence regionally.

Dravidian politics has its roots in Christian missionary propaganda since they failed to convert Brahmins they resorted to Demonizing them and it actually works, right now south India is filled with crypto converts that hold political power and control Hindu temples which rhymes with what happened in ancient Rome and well, we all know what happened after that. A lot of shit was started by the missionaries and later appropriated by the communists/ wokes and since we're a democracy now that bends over backward for minorities, and not only ignores history it actually actively subverts it to make Hindus the villain. It ignores the religious aspects of Invasions and conquest when it comes to Islam and Christianity which only got worse during the 80s when KGB infiltrated our institutions. In India(or the world) its basically Hindus vs Islamists/Communists/Christian Missionaries/Wokes. These are also weaponized as a geopolitical tool to subvert a nation and actively gets support from CIA, Russia and China so how much of it is religious and how much political who knows. @@speed5260 You should read Sri Aurobindo's books The Secret of the veda and Hyms to the Mystic Fire. Both are about the Vedics. The Vedic teaching are very old could be 10,000 - 12,000 old and Sanskrit are their native language, hence so it is Indian origin. Those books are free to download google Sri Aurobindo Ashram and go to his books.

The Mitanni evidence of Indo-Aryan languages spoken in Syria in 1800 BC is the lynchpin of OIT which the migrationists prefer to (conveniently) ignore. Tushratta, Vasukani, Indra, Varuna, Mitra, Marya, etc in the Ancient Middle-East pretty much settles it. Likewise, the centrality of SaptaSaraswati in the older hymns of the Vedas is also ignored. This was a great experience! And for those that are still confused with Mr. Chavda's over-arching goal, I reckon he wants to establish the R1a's ultimate source from India ( even if there were several stages in between). And thus, even if the indo-iranian language groups originate in central Asia, these people ultimately came from the Indian subcontinent anyways. There are several popular KZbin channels that still refer to Aryan Invasion as a matter of fact. That gets the goat of many who lean towards a more India centric view of the evolution of Hinduism. I choose to believe that there were no such invasions or migrations in the times being spoken of. People moved eastwards and westward for trade and wars and possibly settled where they went. Languages evolved in different directions based on relative isolation or intermingling of populations.

I think this whole topic would be a lot less controversial if people didn't hyper-focus on the 'European' part of 'Indo-European'. Even if all Indo-European languages originate from the same place (which is probably somewhere between Ukraine and Turkey, and thus pretty far from what most people stereotypically imagine as 'Europe'), and there are some tenuous cultural links as a result (e.g. in comparative mythology), the 'Indian' and 'European' wings of the family are so massively far apart in terms of time and culture that it's basically meaningless. What is _more_ interesting are the cultural similarities between Ancient India and Ancient Persia, which are a lot more apparent. Most obviously, the very name 'Iran' is etymologically related to 'Arya'. There are lots of very interesting (and linguistically obvious) links Zoroastrian and pre-Zoroastrian Persian tradition and the Vedas e.g. (Persian) daeva - (Vedic) deva or (Persian) Mithra to (Vedic) Mitra

@@gladeloy3341 The skin colour of Ancient Persians was almost certainly similar to that of modern Iranians - meaning a range between fairly olive skinned and fairly pale. Not that it really matters? On what basis so you say Basques and Berbers have any particular connection to Persians? As far as I know, there isn't a single paleogenetic study that links those three populations. Are you maybe referring to the genetic movement associated with the spread of agriculture (often called Anatolian Farmers as a shorthand)? Because there is no strong link between that group and Persia, nor are Berbers and Basques exclusively descended from that group (more or less so than their neighbours). Blood type isn't a good indicator of ancestry (you are relying on basically 2 genes out of 20,000, and O+ is the most common blood type in the world).

I was actually under the impression that the Aryan invasion theory and the indo European migration theory were the same thing. I'm an American and I was taught the Aryan invasion theory in school. It may be old pseudoscience but it seems that its still very widely circulated, both in india and across the world, so many people are likely just genuinely confusing the 2, and religious and right wing nationalist groups in India would likely stand to benefit from that misunderstanding. It doesn't help that under British occupation, the aryan invasion theory was used to justify the better treatment and promotion of aryan Indians over Dravidians, that the northern people of India were a superior race from their inter mixing with 'European stock' thousands of years earlier. And especially in northern India, the idea of being invaded and changed, even in a historical context is still a sore subject for many indians, From the abbasid caliphate, to the Mughal Turks, to European powers with an emphasis on Britain. Many Indians have likely externalized the indo Europeans because popular world history so often writes off the achievements of the Indian people in favor of their conquerors. So for scholarship to determine correctly that the vedas, texts that are quintessentially Indian and one of the few things the whole continent shares as something brought by outsiders is seen as an attack by western scholarship on the concept of indianness itself. And looking at the socio-cultural conditions of modern India and its relationship with its history, its hard not to see their concerns, even if it may be unfounded. I'm sure that the discussion will be settled though in the future, and as we slowly defeat the aryan invasion narrative, the indo aryans can gradually come to take their place in Indian history not as conquerors but as a thread in the ancient and vibrant tapestry of Indian identity.

If one reads the deep truths in the Vedas, he would immediately guess that to crystalize those ideas it would have taken 1000s of years. Hence it is a near impossibility that they were composed in 300 or so years. A cruicial error that can debunk the Aryan migration as a means of introduction of Sanskrit to the subcontinent is the wrong identification of Chandragupta (Chandragupta 1 of the gupta dynasty) mentioned by Megesthenes as Chandragupta Maurya. Megesthenes mentions 3 kings who lived around the time of Alexander's invasion, Xandrames, Sandrachottus, and Sandrocyptus. These three were erroneously identified as Nanda (Dhanananda of Nanda dynasty), Chandragupta Maurya, and Bindusara (Chandragupta's son). Anyone can guess that apart from the similar sounding Sandrachottus, the other two names are wrongly identified. The true identities of the 3 kings mentioned by Megesthenes are Chandra Sri --- Xandrames (the last king of the Andhra dynasty that ruled from 800 to 320 BC), Chandragupta 1 -- Sandrochottus, and Samudragupta -- Sandrocyptus (Chandragupta 1's son). The Gupta empire started at 321 BC, not in 319 AD as commonly believed. Devanama Piya of the edicts is not the same as Ashoka Maurya of the Maurya dynasty who is mentioned in Sri Lankan chronicles. No current historian has even cared to right this wrong. Buddha was born before Chandragupta Maurya who ruled (as per puranic records) in 1500s BC. Buddha opposed the Vedas. Hence Vedas were created much before his birth and hence Aryan migrants bringing in the sanskrit language is disproved.

Ashoka Maurya is not known to have fought a war in Kalinga and was a Buddhist by birth. Kumaragupta 1 (the grandson of Samudragupta) did fight a war against Kalinga and it is possible that he may have honoured his grandfather by the title devanama piya asoka (because Samudragupta used the title of Ashokaditya). That explains why the edicts were most probably by Kumaragupta around 200 BC rather than Ashoka Maurya who ruled from Girivraja (not Pataliputra) in 1400s BC. Unless these errors are revisited and corrected, it would be meaningless to talk about later indian history because these are the foundations of that history.

Indus script is not yet deciphered. But seals like the pasupathy seal, yogic postures (there are six yogic postures in indus seals), pipal tree etc clearly show that early form of Hinduism was practised by IVC. From what I was told in history class a long time ago, originally Filipinos were converted to Catholicism and as such took on the names of their Spanish rulers to complete the conversion. But strictly genetically speaking, if we were to do a random sample of genes in Filipinos, and suppose most of the samples were women, there would be no evidence the Spanish were ever there, but the history is close enough in our memories that we know that notion is false. They don't trace your descendents exactly, they compare your DNA to the DNA of other people alive today in different parts of the world. This sounds so weird. I've only been reading popular books about population genetics, PIE-origins etc, since about 1988 or so, and pretty randomly. I've honestly NEVER heard of the theory in this form (IE-invasion into Indian subcontinent from Europe). Only the various competing PIE theories (Central Asia, Anatolia, various variations on this, various way-points), which all places the PIE-origin not in Europe, not in India. Before this video, if anyone had told me that the Indic branch of Indo-European originated in an "Aryan invasion" _from Europe_ I would have thought they were bonkers, or relying on 19th century theorising. From as long as I can remember (born in 1972) I've had the impression that the European-Indic connection is the result of migration from somewhere (mystery!) into both Europe AND India. I Appreciate the video very much, though i couldn't understand all of it. In case if you read the comment, let me give some idea about the politics here. 1. I live in far southern part of India. Politicians here(south) During time of independence used AIT as a political tool, claiming all bad things happened to ppl here are due to brahmins(priest-synonyms with aryan). Further, it was politically a good fit as mostly brahmins were economically and socially doing very well, while other castes are doing a lot worse. The politics worked well, and even works today. That's why Hindu conservative parties couldn't win much in elections here. Further, Due to this politics, ppl here widely believe AIT/AMT and as non expert i don't find any difference bw AIT/AMT in terms of explaining me the differences in cultural, language, religious(yes, religious but today it became part of so called "Hinduism" ) & politics of south & north( including brahmins of south) 2. But the above said politics didn't work much in northern part of India. Mainly due the invasion of Muslim rulers in northern India ppl there hold to Hinduism(Hinduism in south differ in certain things) more strongly. As you told in the beginning of the video it is hard for the ppl to accept origin of their language, religious practices etc are not India, so some hindu conservative political parties align themselves pseudo scientific theories so the ppl will comfortably feel indigenous. To me this seems to confirm that the Harrapan civilization was Dravidian, and that it was knocked out by a giant ocean surge up the valley as a result of earthquake. There were survivors on both sides. If so, such an event could also have been the precondition for the migration, for it would have opened huge productive assets to new settlers. Any thoughts on such a scenario?

The Brahui people of Pakistan are Dravidian speakers, but it is unknown whether they may be the direct descendants of the Indus Valley Civilization; some propose that they may actually have migrated to Pakistan from South India. Further complicating matters, they also don't show significant genetic differences from their Indo-European-speaking neighbors.

For what it's worth, i think most US Americans who hear "Hinduism" probably think about the reincarnation cycle, if they know anything about religion outside the United States Christianity at all (which there are definately a lot of bubbles of ignorance. ) I definately agree that we should learn more. Since we are getting into Genetics can a video be done about the Mainstream interpretation of how Haplogroup X ended up in the Americas and Mesopotamia at the same time around 12500 years ago. I am really curious how these two clusters, one becoming I believe the Phoenicians and the others becoming the Navajo Native Americans ( least they still retain the largest amounts). Nova Scotia seems to be where it started in the Americas. I have heard multiple explanations for this Haplogroup but would love to hear your opinion on the matter.

The oldest American human DNA we have from the Americas is 9000 years old so I am not sure if they really did arrive at the same time. Those footprints in Mexico is dated between 21 and 23 000 years old and for all we know, those could belong to the same Haplogroup or it could have arrived later then 12 500 years ago. We lack the genetic evidence for Clovis and older people in America but we do know they came from Northern Asia so I assume people migrated in 2 directions, possibly at the same time, possibly 10 000 years apart. I am not sure how many DNA sequences we have around Mesopotamia from that time either, DNA doesn't like heat but I admit I haven't read up on that (I have on American DNA since me and a buddy had a discussion about it and I felt I needed to factcheck it. I actually assumed we had older American DNA then we do before reading up on it). The DNA of Native North and South Americans are pretty interesting though, the strangest part is really how some people in Southern South America have Australian DNA markers, that I can't explain.

If the aboriginals used to be good at sea travel (not unlikely, they didn't get to Australia by walking or swimming) or if they hitched a ride with some Polynesians is up for debate. That is unless the same people spread the same genes to South America and Australia while the genes died out locally but that somehow seems less likely.

@@AshrafAnam This hypothesis of haraxvati being saraswati has been debunked many a times. Because haraxvati is not the name of Helmand but of it's tributary known as "Arghandab". And Helmand River derives it's name from a Sanskrit word "setumant" (setubaddh) which means a river dam. Later setumant became hetumant (in avestan texts) then helmand. So it points to the fact that long ago ago a group of people who knew sanskrit (ancient Hindus) built a dam on this river and named it setumant. There are many many more gaps in this hypothesis. First of all helmand river does not drain into the ocean nor it had ever been in the past. There is no paleo channel (river bed) to be found of helmand (or that of harut river) that proves it used to drain in the Ocean. It dies in Afghanistan itself into a lake. So it is not saraswati because saraswati used to flow into the ocean. Saraswati is said to be between Sutlej and Yamuna. Does helmand lie between any two rivers with similar names? No. Saraswati used to have a tributary named drshadvati. Did helmand ever have a tributary with a similar name? No. The kurukshetra of Mahabharata is said to lie between saraswati and drshdavati. (When saraswati was in it's drying phase). Also the text of Mahabharata speaks heavily of the River Sarswati. Did Mahabharata happen in Iran or Afganistan? No. Where does kurukshetra lie? Exactly where it's supposed to, in North Western part of India, near dried riverbed of Saraswati. So I don't know what age old books are you reading. Because this hypothesis is slowly losing it's credibility and therefore traction.

As somebody that majored in linguistics but has no graduate academic credentials in anything, I really want a linguistic follow-up. At the time of my college career, a steppe origin for IE languages was the old consensus and my professors believed it but admitted the viability of the hot newer theory of an earlier Anatolian origin and a spread associated with agriculture; my understanding is that the intervening years have not been kind to the Anatolian hypothesis, and that better integration of archeological and genetic (both human and equine) evidence into our field is a large part of why.

I would like to inform you that there's still many people who believe in aryan invasion theory and case system based on skin color outside America and Europe. Some are too lazy to update their curriculum, some are likely more comfortable with that idea. I grew up in a religious country that's not hindu, and this is what we been thought about India and Hindusm in schools (to this day). And since Aryan invasion and indo-aryan migration is kinda similar from the outside, all the new discoveries like genetics, still fits into the old theory. even if it doesn't fit, we'll make it fit somehow. Common aryan invasion deniers also didn't help because they reject the existence of the migration entirely, which is completely against the historical evidences.

While Dr Miano says in this video that caste was not racial, and that it was largely related to occupation, later on he says that the evidence is clear that there was a big genetic component to caste, with upper caste and Northern Indians having more ANI/Indo-Iranian DNA than lower caste and Southern Indians. It seems pretty likely that this genetic distinction would be reflected in how these different genetic groups looked, including relating to skin colour.

Part of the problem is that the word invasion is ill-defined. Does an invasion require a centralized command, such as a king? Does an invasion require the defenders to take up arms? Can any migration with skirmishes be categorized as an invasion? etc.. David Reich has a chapter in his book where he discusses "The genomics of inequality", but there is a difference between the words "inequality" and "invasion".

If it's about race, then all dravidian (for example) will automatically a sudra and all aryan will automatically a brahmin. But infact amongst dravidian have their own brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya and sudra, so does in aryan and other ethnic groups. So it's more like job division amongst individual group. Also if i'm not mistaken, in manawa dharma shastra said you can change your class which is a big no no in racial caste system. Hey, i am from patel community from Gujarat and i agree with migration because my ancestors pass our history generation to generation, and according to them my community came from the iran and afghanistan regions to Punjab for farming, after so much time our ancestors moved to Gujarat from Punjab because of so many invader came to Punjab, and they could not do farming easily. Around 2000 to 1000 years ago my community moved and till we know about our community history very well because our ancestors used to transfer our root’s history. Speaking specifically about the pronunciation of C in English, it's a much more recent phenomenon: we took those pronunciations from the thousands of French words that entered English during the last 800 years, in which C before I or E is pronounced like /s/, but before/after other letters is pronounced like /k/. The reference to the groups north and south of the Caucasus you made may be instead referring to the Centum-Satem divide, which refers to a pronunciation difference among the Indo-European languages that saw an original /*ky/ sound become simple /k/ in many western branches of Indo-European (including Italic, Greek, and Celtic), but an /s/ sound in many eastern branches of Indo-European (including Indic and Slavic). For example, the original Indo-European word *kymtóm "hundred", became in Latin (from the Italic branch) but in Sanskrit (from the Indic branch).
