I found an inertial starter on a stand at an airshow. I didn't know what it was, but the hand crank sticking out was turning slowly - very strange. I decided to give it a crank, and see what happened. It was bizarre how much effort it took, and the howl was unnerving. Somewhere in there I figured out what it was, based on something in an old book and the fact the flywheel housing was about the size of a starter motor. I had envisioned a big flywheel like on an old John Deere tractor.

That makes me think of the toy cars I had in the 80s, that you'd push em forward on the floor real fast, pick it up and repeat quickly several times... Then push the lil button on top and it would blast off.

eastern germany, back when it still was eastern germany, produced electric generators powered by a small gas turbine. They were thought to be useful in emergency situations as they, similarly to an Abrahams tank, can be run on basically everything remotely resembling kerosene, diesel, waste oil or whatever else you got. They too had an inertial starter built in to Handcrank it

Bakeries sucked back then them and the charging system would add a lot of weight and complexity to a utility vehicle that had to always start. Back then the shotgun or initial starter I would take any day over an electric starter.

Not a flywheel its a spring and no motor due to that starter was ment to stop need for batteries

Starter motors are dead weight once flying, don't need the extra weight.
