I don’t know why people hate on him so much simply because he doesn’t charge as much as other surfers. Mick Fanning was also struggling in bigger surf and it took him years to overcome his fears, yet I never saw anyone giving him shit because he didn’t perform well at Teahupoo. I think a lot of it is just racism and such behaviour has no place in our sport. To me Toledo is still one of the most stylish surfers I’ve ever seen on tour and I hope he comes back.

For the love of God, human beings, at least once, enjoy the guy's surfing, and forget that he's not good in big waves. Forget that he won and you were sad, if you like surfing and technique, just enjoy it once, without any preconceptions.

Toledo has often surfed very well in quite solid waves. Was steadily building his reputation, then had a bad flu at Chopes and basically sat-out his Heat and The Critics swooped like vultures.
