That's a misconception.Waldner was old and tried to save energy for next matches.His game could be pretty physical.He's the closest equivalent to Federer,a mix of touch and power.

It was a new ball and they left a mark on the rubber. JO simply cleaned the ball (38mm, not 40 and no plastic ).

@@philippelepage3816 Agree and I love when players show emotion. Grunting is fine. But the vast majority of today's players scream so loud after each point won and that's when it becomes annoying. It's like they just won a $10 million lottery.

Same here. 21 setters allow players to make more strategic play, use different kinds of serves at different time point. 11 setters is just too short.

If you haven't tried it already, try watching table tennis matches at a slower speed. It makes it so much more enjoyable seeing how the players position themselves and their paddles while competing. I personally watch at 0.25 playback speed.

Waldner attacks Timo's backhand consistently - often a weak area for left handers. If you play intelligently, you don't have to work that hard. Find your opponents weaknesses, and attack to those areas. It's why Waldner had such a long career - good all round technique, and no serious injuries.

chinese player tends to retire when they on 30s even they still can compete in competitive games.. i dont know why.. maybe because of their country rules? ma lin, wang hao, wang li qin retire when they still rank in top 30.. also when they retire, they make way for new generation of players like xu xin, ma long and fan zhendong..

@@rjari8578 it seems there are new players like the French brothers Lebrun that are bringing back the 90s touch with more spin, transitions between slow/fast pace, near/far from the table... Something different from the top focus feast we saw the last 20 years. I hope some day defensive players with curls may also have a chance... I never understood why all spin rubbers were always validated but as soon as a new curl or antispin is effective, it s banned

Notice how they did not do banana flick back then. Not even forehand flips. A lot of relatively high yossed short serves just got pushed long to fw or bk. How the game changed since then!!

@4:10 then reprimanded @4:15 , am I right? Waldner is very talented and capable but I've never liked his attitude on court. Cocky and too much self centered. His trade mark, as you say, is hiding to serve. What a low a act by a professional. On the other end, Timo is so gentle and polite, even after so many years playing/winning at the top level. Wish there were more players like him in future. (I am Chinese but only believe in facts, never biased).

@@spaceinvader384 I grew up as a Timo fan. He was my first hero in TT when I was a child. A true gentleman, beyond being a great master of the game. I do not know too much of Waldner as a person to be honest, but as a player he is one of the best that ever played it. Coincidentally I chose the Donic Dotec Waldner Carbon as my blade, but because the blade is great, not because I am a Waldner fan.

Tried head phone many times. The ref cautioned about "returning shots ON table but NOT UNDER the table". Followed those 3 scores from @3:51 to @4:37. Waldner's serve was OK (legit at the time). No penalty issued. Can't understand the caution, may be some rule before my TT era. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I am a penholder with a couple of Donic rubbers in my 10+ blades collection. Not bad combo but still experimenting. Happy TT and thanks for sharing.

@@spaceinvader384 Appreciate the sharing as well. I used to play with DHS Hurricane 8 on the FH and Joola Rhyzm-P on BH. Now I have Donic Bluefire JP 01 Turbo on FH and Yasaka Rakza PO on BH. I only have 2 Donic Dotec Carbon blades with this setup and a Yasaka Sweden Extra with DHS Hurricane 8 on FH and Yinhe Uranus Poly on BH. Had plenty premade bats before. But custom is the best. I miss playing... Still lockdown in UK. What blades do you have?

Not at all, in that time hidden the ball was legal but the rule changed in 2002 if I not mistaken.

It was legal back then. the ittf changed rules every sunday in the early 2000s, some rubbers were banned every year, it was a pain.
