Hello. Can I use the Sonos to control my lights etc? I heard the Sonos Alexa isn’t a full Alexa. What’s different about it? What can’t it do? Thanks

Thanks for your inquiry! The Sonos Beam and Sonos One are the first two products in the new generation of Sonos which do, in fact, have full Alexa capability: think of it like an Echo, built right inside the speaker. These can be used to speak commands for Alexa compatible devices throughout your home, just like an Echo product.

how do you set up an echo dot to control non voice control sonos speakers? for example, if i have a play 5 in the kitchen next to a dot and i want it to play a spotify playlist through that speaker. I'm completely new to wifi speakers AND alexa, so sorry if its pretty straight forwards lol

Thanks for your question. If you are accessing a complete album from an available service and it provides the playlist that would be available on your app, then you should be able to select an individual track.

Do you need the alexa box or if your phone is jailbroken, can you do it with just the jailbroken alexa app?

Thanks for your inquiry! The Alexa control device is built into the Sonos One. Whereas the Play series needs an external device such as an Echo, the One has it built in. There is no official documentation available to us on the performance of hardware or software on jailbroken devices. Since there is no information available to us on this topic, we don’t dabble with these types of setups, so we are unable to provide guidance in this regard. Thank you!

I had a Sonos Play 1 and needed a bridge to use it anywhere in my home. Does the new Alexa enabled Sonos One require a bridge for wireless operation?

Hi Brian - Thanks for your question! The Sonos One has the same network capability as the Play:1, so it would probably still need the Bridge (or Boost, a unit which replaced the Bridge).

Thank you! If I bought the Sonos One Alexa enabled, would I need a bridge for just the one unit? My plan is to build from there. I would just get the bridge later when I need it for more speakers.

You're welcome! It all depends on your network coverage. If your desired location has good coverage, you should be ok. For adding more items to your system down the road, though, I definitely recommend upgrading to the Boost. It simultaneously improves the connections of each speaker and reduces load on your network, to keep Sonos from slowing your internet down.
