The latest game on Worst Game On Steam is Code:29 and it's an absolute mess. However to be fair it was a good laugh, but for all the wrong reasons.
As far as the series goes, this is definitely the worst game on steam so far but only god knows what we'll find next.
I'm WickedWiz from the What Went Wrong series coming at you with some of the most cursed indie games on Steam. This new series is for games that are so bad, that they're actually good. Worst Game On Steam, is a question that hopefully turns out to be false each time. These are games that won't fit the longer form What Went Wrong videos.

I love how on the OI!, they colored the keys using the paint can in MS paint but didn't bother filling in the letters. And it looks like they accidently got some orange on the shift key. I love it.

Actually, it looks like they used a paint bucket tool in a "real" graphic editor (like GIMP or Photoshop) because if it was filled in MS Pain, it would have those weird white borders around the keys. But yeah, they still didn't bother to fill the holes in the letters.

I like to imagine the dev kept losing to the military guys, so they changed it so their guns aim to the right, which also made the player's gun aim to the right somehow.

I think they hard set the bullet fire target, to the TPS camera, then hard coded it to fire from FPS camera when you switch to FPS perspective. But the dev decided they like FPS mode more so changed the start view to FPS, But the fire position was still TPS by default
@RusticRonnie
@RusticRonnie 2 жыл бұрын
Also, if you want to make games, this is a pretty common way to do it when learning. But you are better off moving the camera and have a FPS view model attached to the camera that toggles to be visible, in FPS mode. It requires less resources and is easier to manage

@Hydin yea I think only a few games every really should use the whole “world player model is also your first person view model” and only a few games ever got it right (ArmA 3 being the one that comes to mind) because when not done right it leads to the most janky feeling ever, but when done right it can really add a whole layer of immersion making you feel physically in the game world

I'm impressed that the torn clothes mechanic is properly implemented, and that your character does not flash naked every time you take damage or shoot or something like that. I can see where the priorities of the development went, lol.

It’s not that difficult. All you’d have to do is have a mask shader shaped like a noise function that’s controlled by a single floating point value, and simply add to/subtract from that value the amount of damage you’ve taken. Divided by 100, assuming a 100-point HP system and a 0-1 range intensity value for the shader I think. I haven’t toyed with this kind of thing specifically but I have played with similar things. So… don’t quote me on any of this lol

Haha well on end you have that super low budget Canadian RPG that YMS played, it's extremely janky and crap but has a pretty ambitious combat system and lore, they're like 20 bucks but he seems to at least be passionate..? Uh, skylight free-range. ..then there's those elder scrolls ripoff games that were ALWAYS on PS store sales, very blatantly a scam, like NFT level of blatant ripoff hahah, i wish i remembered the name, it's been sitting on the PS store for years and i have no clue who would ever buy it, even for steam it's a low bar
@TheRealLizardKing
@TheRealLizardKing 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kralledd You can't farm cards like that anymore, it's been like that for few years now. All new releases have steam cards disabled (unless you're publishing with a known publisher / are a known developer ) and valve will enable the card drops only after you reach certain milestones. Valve is secretive about which parameters they are, but I'm confident the main one is the revenue. Even so, people would still have to buy those cards in large numbers to make a profit, something that's not going to happen with these types of products. In my opinion this is just a school project or a kid trying to be an indie developer.

I have a theory, when you put a game on steam they will give you 5000 keys, no questions asked. I think the devs just sell these to key seller websites for like 10c a pop or something, that way theyd make 400$ and lets be honest, this game did not take 400$ worth of labour
@CRUMVIII
@CRUMVIII Жыл бұрын
@@phaeste Interesting theory. Could very well be the case as I don't have any real idea how steam handles "free" keys requested by the devs.
@didles123
@didles123 5 ай бұрын
@@phaeste I don't think this theory makes a lot of sense, because someone still needs to buy the keys at the end of the day. I don't think they key sellers would put themselves at risk, and the key sellers are going to have less discoverability than the steam store itself, so it would make more sense just to list the price low on steam if that were the strategy. Also I think this game took more than $400 worth of labor. Maybe that would be the case if you have an experienced game dev who just churned it out as if it were a game jam, but even then game jams are usually 24 to 72 hours. I think this is most likely a novice dev who put a lot of hours into it before realizing how long it was going to take to really polish, and so they just put it on steam and moved onto something else.

when i played that game after it came out (i was a huge walking dead fan and didn't know any better at the time), i remember distinctly this one level in a trainyard where a horde of zombies were running around, and i ended up clearing the entire area because i discovered that the AI simply makes them follow you directly, and they don't have any pathfinding intelligence at all, they just run directly at you regardless of what's in their way. Long story short, I ended up hiding in a train car as each of them ran up to it one at a time and literally hitting them through the wall when their models would occasionally clip through the model. What was supposed to be a hard stealth section ended up just being me killing every single enemy one at a time as they glitched through the wall.

The aim thing I think I know why it's happening. The Dev initialised the aim as third person but the perspective as first (not sure why and really they should have some kind of way to make sure they are aligned from initialisation). Anyway when you swap modes it sets the value correctly in the code that handles switching to the right aim to match the view.

Yeah, a lot of these horrible games would have been infinitely better if the developers spent the time playtesting their products. As a professional software developer I sometimes talk to hobbyist and beginner developers who are intimidated by the (relatively) bug-free code more experienced developers write. I always tell them that we don't necessarily write better code; the difference is that we're testing it so we can fix the bugs. This is how I spot inexperienced colleagues; they never test. That's the difference.

This makes me think... Slight clothing damage making your character look more raggedy over time could be kind of an interesting mechanic in terms of being another way to show your character's damage having actual effects on them without punishing the player for failure by making it harder to succeed (by handicapping the character in accordance with their injuries)... but obviously, it would have to be thought through with healing mechanics (healing fixing your clothes is immersion breaking, but it becomes less of an indicator of health otherwise), and it's also more likely to be implemented by people who don't care about that as much as "woman end up naked lol". ...now I kind of wanna see a game where a character's power comes from their outfit, but as the outfit gets raggedier, they get weaker, and medkits are replaced with sewing kits.

You have to make sure they can open both sides. Players hate when they get stopped by doors so you want to have some button to cancel going through door or make enemies not target you for a bit or give players invincibility frames, but not after animation ends. What's baffling about this is that it was clearly more work an an asset flip, and they put in effort into some parts, but left tons of extremely obvious and glaring issues that make their effort pointless. Why not just make an asset flip? Why not fix the extremely obvious problems if they were going to put effort into those things? Makes no sense

@@Dovah_Slayer If that's the case, then the game pretty much rewards you for failing, since you've got to be close to death to be naked. Maybe that's why they left so many glaring issues. It would be tricky to come up with a mechanic where playing well makes you lose your clothing, but I think it would be interesting to see.

9:26 I get the feeling that the dev/s just imported a bunch of bought/stolen assets without even bothering with checking what the models were scaled after. The crazy scaling difference also makes me think that the models were taken from multiple assets packs or single assets, they lack any unifying scale.

10:12 I tried this mess of a program and that enemy for some unknown reason is a zombie superman, I'm not joking. Zombie superman will land randomly somewhere on the map, I later found him out side of the military base on one play through after his take off from the power station cooling tower. He always starts from that point. Once you find him again he can be killed but will take a good few shots to take him down. I just get the feeling that the dev threw everything they could think off into their program (I refuse to call it a game) and once they ran out ideas or more likely assets that they had on hand, they called it done and put it out on steam.

Jesus christ I can't get over how bad that reload animation is. Like they tried as hard as possible to make it cover the EXACT middle of the screen. The only thing worse would be if they just brought the whole gun in front of your face so you were functionally blind for a few seconds

Dear Steam: Please, please implement SOME form of quality control in your greenlighting system. Like, take a few of your staff, play the submitted game, and see if it's at least functional. If it isn't, like this, please do not allow it on your platform.

238 games are added to Steam a week. Let's say it takes 15min to check if a game is functional. That's 12hrs of work a day assuming a 5 day work week. You could hire two part timers, at $15/hr. That's $900/week or $46,800/yr. Or get one full-timer to do all of it for the same price or even less, but that gives you 10:05/game. Though, realistically, not every game would need the 10min, so it would be doable. Would need a chonkin internet connection though, and download them overnight. Also a lot of storage. Or just not do anything cause even the broken ones make money. I was just curious about the logistics of it.

At least the dog was quite cute. :) What's most shocking about these games aren't really the quality, it's that the people making them seem to never do playtesting. They can't be content with a buggy mess, can they? And the most fundamental question: "would I have paid £6 for this if someone else had made it?" I'm a software developer and a big mistake junior (and sometimes not so junior) developers make is to not test their code throughout development. If we're lucky, they test after they feel they are finished. If they then find serious bugs (which is likely due to them just hammering away writing code, without testing), they won't bother because in order to fix them, they probably would have to essentially destroy the whole thing and start from scratch. So they leave the bug in, hoping nobody notices. That's horribly bad development practice.

11:30 The overhang on the building you enter is "SUSES Internations..." 🤨 1. "Internations" isn't a word. I assume they meant "international." 2. "SUSES" is also not a word so i assume they meant "Suzie's," maybe? 3. "SUSES," does that mean that the entire building is just like, 90% vents because sus? 🤔 (sorry, I know it's pretty much a dead meme, but c'mon! You can't get a more perfect setup than that lol!)
