Just a quick little backstory. BTS debuted in 2013, but Agust D was a rapper/producer in the underground rap scene for years before that. And when he debuted in BTS, he got a lot of hate for being a 'sell out'. He always said he just wanted to get his music and message out to a wider public (and he still mentions how he is proud of BTS for doing that). His BTS stage name is actually Suga and in 2016 he released his first free mixtape under the name Agust D (Suga backwards + DT which stands for Daegu town - his previous rap crew). His 2016 Agust D mixtape was his response to all of the people who dragged BTS thru the mud since they debuted. So it is really angry and raw. (It was only released on Soundcloud and KZbin at the time). He had BLOND hair in the two music videos for that mixtape. In 2020 he released his second mixtape D2 (it was still released for free on Soundcloud but it was also available on streaming services). Daechwita is the title track for that. In the behind the scenes stuff he said that the black haired him is killing the 2016 blond him who got too greedy on power. And about the song he said that we shouldn't pay too much to the lyrics because he meant for the whole song to be more of a sound and visual experience. Then last year he released his first official album called D-Day. With two music videos that complete the triology. Haegum is about freeing what is forbidden. In the behind the scenes he talked how he smoked in the video simply because for 'idols' being seen smoking a cigarette is seen as a HUGE scandal. (I remember back in 2017 one BTS member was seen with his friend and the FRIEND was smoking but the BTS member got sent hate and critisized for that.. Korea is truly so weird sometimes.. Tattoos STILL need to be hidden on TV. The youngest BTS member who is known for having a whole tattoo sleave, still had to cover his knucle tattoos (that spell the fandom name) with bandages just a few months ago while promoting his solo stuff in Korea). Suga/Agust D has a talk show called Suchwita (he is currently serving in military) where he talks with different famous people, and whenever he talks to someone who is younger than him, he always says how he is trying to make the industry a better kinder place for them. He even wrote a song called Snooze (on his D-Day) album which is dedicated to all of the younger singers and he says how he hopes they won't suffer like him. Now back to the story. In Haegum the black haired guy who beat the blond haired king now became a currupted cop... and he killed his old him again... but in the ending scene we see that he just started the cycle all over again. The last song in the trilogy is Amygdala. He was working on it for a while and in 2020 while BTS were on 'vacation' he let another member listen to it and explained that Amygdala is the part of the brain that regulates your trauma responses. In the music video we see how he became the Agust D. And also the young him. Before BTS debuted he worked as a delivery guy (on a bike) and had a car accident that crushed his shoulder. He didn't wanna be kicked out of BTS so he didnt tell the company and even lied to his members that he fell down the stairs. They mentioned they only found out when he released his song The last in 2016 on his Agust D mixtape, where he mentions it. His shoulder was so bad he says most of the time only tape was holding it together and he had to get shots in every city before concerts until finally in 2020 during a live online concert in the middle of a hard dance he stopped moving his arm because it pooped out. And he finally went to have surgery and was on 'hiatus' for three months at the end of 2020. Now in 2023 after D-Day dropped he went on a solo tour. And then he had final 3 encore concerts in Korea. And on the last one he opened the door and walked out. (You will get the meaning of that after seeing Amygdala). His songs are really personal so there were lots of tears and stuff at his final concert. .. As for BTS songs and their meaning. BTS write most of their songs and they put their own personal messages into it. So for most of them you need to know what they were going thru in their personal life to see their meaning (they always encorage fans to find their own meaning). The biggest example is their song called Outro : Tear (2018). It is by the 3 rappers of BTS. And if you listen to it.. it is a raw breakup song. Only months later (and a whole album later) after it was released we found out it was actually written by the members to the members. The breakup in the song is about how they were at the time seriously thinking about breaking up. "We used to walk towards the same place, but here becomes our last We used to talk about forever, but now we mercilessly destroy each other I thought we dreamed the same dream, but now the dream truly became just a dream" So to truly understand THEIR meaning, we need to know what they were going thru at the time. And of course there are always easter eggs in the lyrics and music videos. (For example the two guys fighting behind him in the Daechwita mv are the oldest and youngest BTS members) Well.. this wasn't as quick as expected. But it just shows how their music is personal to them. And how if you know THEM as people.. as humans, then their songs get an even better meaning And just a funny thing: Just today i saw someone on Twitter quote their Am I wrong (2016) song: " If you see the news and don’t feel anything, if you see that comment and don’t feel anything, if that hatred doesn’t make you feel anything, you’re not normal but abnormal " and it is totally relatable to nowdays news. But if you dig into what was happening at the time in Korea, it is about their politics and it even mentions how they are all 'dogs and pigs' which is what one politician said about Korean people. I recomend checking out 'Doolset' website for their lyrics translations because they always include this little information that is hard to get unless you were there at the time

I don't know which songs from BTS you reacted to in the past that made you think the rappers can't rap (prob their 3 english speaking songs out of their entire 300+ discography korean songs). BTS started out as a hiphop idol group. RM and Suga were both underground rappers before BTS. One of BTS' main objective is to help people. Their label's mission is "music and artist for healing" and was almost bankrupt when BTS was formed back in 2013, they were not a big kpop company, had no media connections and were barelly surviving financially, BTS is the main reason that company not only survived but became a multibillion dollar company. They did this bc the fans built a gen connection through the music they made, bc their music always had socially conscious messages in them abt what the members were going through that other ppl in their teens and twenties could relate to. BTS writes 99% of their discography, produce/co-produce many songs, and the members are the only ones who decide what they want to talk abt in their music, not their label. Their debut title song "No More Dream" is filled with social commentary abt the korean education system and expectations placed on teens. Their second album's title track N.O. (a few months after) continues this message with even more rebelious lyrics to inspire the youth in SK to go against the injustices forced on them. In a song called "Ma City" where the members sing abt their home towns (/provinces), J-Hope (the third rapper) refers to his as "7 o'clock" which is a direct reference to a slang term from right-wing conspiracy theorists in SK that deny the (VERY bloody) democratic uprising agaisnt the instition of a millitary government that happened in his province back in 1980 after SK's dictator was assassinated and the millitary took over, it was actually many students that participated in the movement, you can read more abt it if you look up Gwangju Uprising on wiki. Suga also wrote and produced a song abt it called "518-062" back in 2010 when he was just 15-16 years old under his rapper name Gloss (a rapper from his previous rap crew " D-TOWN" is the one recorded it). Baepsae is song by BTS that talks abt Spoon Class Theory that became very popular in SK in the early 2010s. Am I wrong is a very checky protest song that they performed on national TV back in 2017 (risking getting blacklisted by their government that was revealed to have a list of over 9k artists that displayed subversive political oppinions) where Suga makes direct quotes from a politician in SK who said that "99% of South Koreans have no ability to move up in the world and can be treated like animals - simply fed and kept alive." RM also has a song with Wale called Change (he raps in english) GENIUS description of the song: It's a progressive, politically engaged song that challenges similar problems of both Eastern and Western cultures, such as lack of faith in the government, failing education system, racism and cyberbulling. At the same time, both artists express hopes for better tomorrow for the next generations that the title changes can bring. In the following song to this trilogy Suga (under the solo name Agust D) raps abt freeing things that are forbiden, by governments, by economic systems, by culture, by ourselves, you will prob like it a lot. Needless to say BTS (and the members) have no shortage of socially conscious music and are not afraid to make political stands on issues they find important. The fact they have a couple of english light hearted pop songs (usually not even written by them bc 6/7 members are not fluent in english) doesn't take away their entire life's work for the past 11 years, and just bc the media won't advertise the songs I just mentioned or play them on radio doesn't mean they aren't part of BTS's identity. BTS is a rabbit hole, if you are willing to learn abt them through the fans, study their discography, go through the trouble of looking up translations, explanation videos, and challenge the things you may think you know abt them with an open mind, you will prob understand why so many people like them and their music. "BTS: More Than K-Pop" from bby gang mag is a great video to explore more os BTS' identity Thanks for the reaction, Bookish theories is a channel that has many explanation videos for BTS music if you want to check it out. I hope you continue this BTS journey

*The Siberian tiger is the national animal of South Korea and is a significant symbol of Korean culture.* The tiger has been a part of Korean history and culture since the beginning of the country, appearing in art, mythology, and folktales. The tiger is associated with many things, including: *Strength, Power, Superiority, Protection from evil spirits, Sacred spirit, Grace, and Intelligence.* I'm going to disregard the first part of the reaction because you started over, and I would like to suggest that before you go off on an artist, especially from a different culture, to please make sure you are not missing cultural references, and finish the song before you give opinion. For your information, BTS has been socially relevant and talking about social issues since their beginnings in 2013. Their CEO made them promise to write about their feelings and emotions, and to infuse that into their music. RM and SUGA wanted to tell their stories and messages, that's why they signed on with Big Hit to become a HIP HOP group.Which is what they do still to this day. Yes, they do write songs about their haters, because that is the best way for them to address the hate. They don't name people, but they say what they need to say. And BTS does get a lot of hate, even since before debut. Min Yoongi (his birth name), SUGA (stage name with BTS), Agust D (solo project name), has been doing this since he was 13 years old, and he is 31 now. BTS has over 350 million fans worldwide, they didn't get that many dedicated fans with music that means nothing. I'm leaving you links to his trilogy. You already listened to the first one, there are two more. I hope you continue on. But if you don't that's fine too. You don't have to like BTS or the members. *Suga aka Agust D's Trilogy:* Agust D - Daechwita (turn on CC's) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3jNcoqAZ9-Kjas Agust D - Haegeum (turn on CC's) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6qcoo2IlLR6l5I Agust D - Amygdala (turn on CC's) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4mUlZ6PpLF7jNU *Meanings for the song titles* *Daechwita* - is a genre of Korean traditional music consisting of military music played by wind and percussion instruments, generally performed while the ARMY is marching or as a static performance usually when the King is arriving. (Suga aka Agust D meant the BTS ARMY to be implied.) *Haegeum* - has two meanings. The first, it's a traditional Korean string instrument, resembling a vertical fiddle with two strings, usually played at Royal Court. Also, it means to lift a ban, or release what is forbidden. *Amygdala* - is an almond shaped part of our brain which is commonly thought to form the core of a neural system for processing fearful and threatening stimuli, including detection of threat and activation of our fight or flight response. The Amygdala helps to store memories of events and emotions so that an individual may be able to recognize similar events in the future.

Daechwita by Agust-D, is a representation of Suga's constant battle against himself and how the desire to achieve his dreams have given him the courage to do everything to achieve being on top, and the emptiness he feels even now when he has everything he wants. Dachwita's MV references parts of Korean culture as well.

I know I am a little late, but I strongly recommend you to listen (and read the translations) to these agust d's songs: polar night, amygdala, people, people pt. 2, strange, the last, haegeum, what do you think and dear my friend. You dont even need to react to them, It's just that I've been an army for eight years now and I completely understand when people don't like their music or their hype songs (evn though I love them), but I really hope that everyone knows the amazing artists/composers/producers BTS' members are. Some cultural things some times get lost in translation, but the way Yoongi/agust d writes about mental health and political issues is the reason why he is my bias. Hope you give it a try, but thanks for the honesty in this reaction anyways!

15:32 Actually "Daechwita" has double meaning. First is it's a piece of music that only gets played when the Emperor arrives. 2nd is it's music piece that only gets played when an army arrives. So the title and the chorus is actually ment to be confusing, cause when "Daechwita" gets played in the entire track. To whom is it actually for? Is it for the King? Or the peasant with an army behind him?

You almost had it, but then you second guessed yourself. It's a deep cut, but before they retconned it to be "BangTan Sonyeondan", BTS originally stood for "Baroness Thatcher Simps", but they had to rebrand after the release of "Margaret Thatcher: The Authorized Biography," by Charles Moore, in 2015, which was less reverent than a lot of prior biographies of Thatcher, and overtly simping for Thatcher became something of a commercial liability. They never completely forgot their roots, though, and the "BangTan" part means "bulletproof", a more subtle tribute to The Iron Lady. And this song is about that, not forgetting your roots. Their roots as a Thatcher tribute band, and Thatcher's modest roots as the daughter of a grocer and tobacconist, whose passion was science. In their hunger for greater commercial success, they compromised on their values, dropping the Thatcher moniker and moving away from their original hip hop style, and that's always haunted them, and this video shows that internal struggle.
