I really appreciate you bringing attention to how frighteningly stupid this trend is. I work as a tech person in a school and we've caught several kids trying to break into our offices, the storage rooms, fire extinguishers, pretty much everything at this point. All technology is more or less being bolted to desks because the kids will take anything that isn't tied down, which causes problems with digital schools because now they're trying to steal each other's laptops. We have daily announcements threatening the kids who participate with arrest and expulsion, and so many kids are being investigated at the moment. It's wildly disappointing and genuinely sad to see such smart kids potentially ruining years of their lives for a microscopic taste of some fake attention. If someone in high school or middle school is reading this, don't do it please, it's not worth it.

Harmless fun in school is fine, like planting random sticky notes and seeing how long it’ll take it to get taken down, or hiding mini plastic babies in weird places, even slipping notes in cracks in the walls (non-horrible ones) and just waiting for people to find them. Its been a year but I still remember that my high school was no exception to the wrath of devious licks. During the height of this trend most bathrooms (usually the boys bathroom of course) would literally be closed off for repairs. One kid even straight up ripped a stall door off its hinges and carried it around with him. So you can imagine that its annoying when youre trying to use the bathroom only to find out that half the bathrooms in the building available to you were just locked off. At one point my school even made a PSA related to devious licks, and it was mentioned to not assault members of staff??? At my old high school, there was a kid who decided to partake for his devious lick, and tried stealing an entire bathroom sink. Dumb, I know. But as he is running away from the scene of his crime, out of everyone he could have run into, he ran into the school's principal. This is interesting for a few reasons, one: the school has to accommodate nearly 3,000 students, so it's a large school, two: there is approximately 300 staff that work at this school, with 6 assistant principals, three: I believe this kid had stolen this sink during class, so the likelihood of him being caught by the school's principal, in the hallway with the sink, is not as low as being struck by lightning, but low enough to fascinate me. Oh, and he was expelled and I believe parents had to pay for damages.

Had this happen at my school. They didn't steal stuff, though, they took hand sanitizer off the wall and tried to flush it in the toilet. I also saw a group of kids practically making a cereal bowl with the toilet. It got so bad that they had to lockdown the bathrooms and the principal sent out an email saying that they would give 100 DOLLARS to anyone who would say who had done it. Several kids got charged with a level 6 felony, and some got charged with a Class A misdemeanor. People getting sent to jail just for some TikTok clout 😭

Imagine if we lived in a world where not wearing a seatbelt wasn't against the law or there weren't serious consequences for it. A lot of people, most importantly young drivers and passengers, would not have one on, and are guaranteed to die if they get in a car crash, because the fact that they don't have a seatbelt means their body will go flying from the impact. It's all about promoting responsible habits. When you excuse bad behavior people will keep doing it. No one is just gonna steal a few times then never steal again, they will keep on coming back until you do something about them, because most people steal if they don't make enough money to consistently afford food, or if they are homeless and jobless. In which it's not the stores fault, but the government for not raising minimum wage in general. The police have to be the ones to apprehend them, because they could be carrying a weapon, so it would be dangerous for the employees. If people didn't get put in jail for stealing a few times, way more people would be stealing, even people who have enough money to pay for it, and especially stupid kids, so the stores would lose a lot of money, part of which they use to pay their employees and the companies they buy the goods from, and the expenses that keep the store running such as electricity, water, gas. For a lot of stores, if they didn't raise the price, there would be no profit. They're just getting the same amount of money they put into getting the goods in the first place, likely even less. And that's bad for most businesses. Some places charge too much, that is true, but for most stores, a lot of calculation goes into deciding the prices of products based on their budget. Littering is bad for the environment. Littering plastic, especially. Trash pollutes the earth. I am not gonna say that it's easy keeping the world clean, but is it really hard to not throw your empty cups or bottles in the grass? The more people who litter, the more pollution, the worse everything smells, and the worse it is for nature. Non-scavenger Animals are harmed because of simple human items that are tossed to the side. Nature isn't our dumping ground. At the very least, we ought to recycle and keep our trash in the trash bins.

At my school before I graduated someone stole the front part of a teachers car, also another crazy thing at my school unrelated to this trend (even tho our school also stole toilets and stuff like that) a girl dyed her hair in the toilet and used the toilet water. Another crazy thing, a janitor was in the girls Locker room ceiling and was fired for it.

Ah, I remember when a kid from our school back when I was in high school broke in to the school at night through the math room window and stole a bunch of iPads kept in a locked case for, well, math and shit. It was over well $10,000 of stolen property and the school actually had someone from the FBI do an investigation, that classroom was actually a crime scene for awhile, and found who it was, a student and his cousin. The cousin was the one who actually broke in though both were directly involved and he was actually arrested, but both were fined for the full worth of the stolen goods, which I think were returned, or maybe they bought new ones. Memories.

I’m student teaching this semester. The school I’m at just redid half of their bathrooms over the summer, making sure they were all working for the kids to finally come back. Thousands of dollars in damages after one month and no money to fix it. On top of that, teachers, subs, and other Ed professionals are scrambling every day to barely get by. We do not have the time for this bullshit. There were supposed to be a new challenge for each month. Including slap a staff member etc. awesome.
