Hand sticking out, with a "magic system" that actually just functions as your variety of standard FPS weapon archetypes... This is just Devil Daggers. But this is like the antithesis of Devil Daggers. Whereas Devil Daggers is a game stripped of everything, but the rock-solid, core gameplay loop of combat. Immortals of Aveum is all about the "everything else". Dialogues, characters, story, locations, graphics, set pieces and busyworks. And I don't know if they did that because they know they hadn't created a compelling enough combat system. Or that they hadn't made a compelling enough combat system, because they're too enamored/busy with creating everything else.

Edit - Been playing for a while more, and fucking hell some of these bugs are awful. Irreplaceable items vanishing from your inventory is straight up unacceptable. Nothing gives a positive review like being forced to reload to the last save because you tried to use an item and it just vanishes. This game needs to have a console open at all times for the /give item command just to unfuck glitches. Been playing BG3 for the past 7 or so hours, and I've got to say, it's not as good as people are making it out to be. Here I am, walking into the game completely blind. I know basically fuck all about the setting, and I'm just left fucking baffled continuously. "OMG you're a worshipper of Shar!" Well who the fuck is Shar? Contextually they're....not that good of a deity? I guess? Fuck if I know. The game doesn't explain shit to you. You're just handed a wall of an interface, stuck into the world, and forced to wing it, as the design of the game certainly isn't going to inform you of the very relevant and topical information that you should have, if you want to make any meaningful decisions. Couple that with the random...I can't call them freezes, but more like interactive prompt lag? I don't know. People are hyping it up, but in my eyes it's just average, and leaving me having to pause the game continuously to look shit up on a wiki to see what anyone is talking about.

They get free early review copies. That way they can get their reviews out as soon as possible before anyone else and generate a lot of ad revenue. It is in the reviewer's best interest to say good things about the video games they review in order to keep getting free early copies. The developers also get more sales because they hear the game is good. It is a symbiotic relationship between the publisher and reviewer that benefits both organisms. This is why I don't trust any pre-release materials.

Stop using a HDD (you said you use one), you can't properly play games without a SSD these days. Your HDD reads at 100 MB/s while a SSD does it at 550 MB/s, and if you go a step further with a NVME Gen 3 it will read at 3500 MB/s. You can have a 2TB Gen 3 NVME for €85 (Crucial P3), that's even cheaper than a SSD of that size. NVME's are at an all time low at the moment, less than half the price compared to 9 months ago. Your stutters will disappear on the horizon.

The performance issues are all down to Unreal Engine 5. This lack of optimization really highlights that developers need to start making their own 3D engines again. You know why the performance is so bad? It's because they put in a lighting model that cuts work of the developer in half but also cuts your frame rate in half. It's entirely just lazy unoptimized bullshit from studios that are using these pre-fabed 3D engines to pump out useless shinny garbage. The inefficiency of modern developer code should make them ashamed of themselves. We are nearing 200Gb for single games. That should throw up all the red flags, Games have not become 4X better in the last few years, developers have just become 4X more lazy and 4X more greedy. The whole development system needs to change and change for the better. Starting with no more copy and pasting everyone else's 3D engine and trying to make it work with your game idea. The games of old can run on calculators for god sake! But if you port them to Unreal Engine 5, you will struggle to run Doom with a 4090 and a 13900K.

Mack, I've been watching your reviews for some time, and now is the time to come out of hibernation in this particular review and say, I finally heard the words from YOU (no one else ever) in what I've felt in a very very very long time - What the hell is the point in spending lots of money on a high end gaming PC when most of the games coming out now are just an absolute pile of crap, not to mention bug ridden and unfinished. What's worse is the amount of people carrying on and paying for this crap, as well as going a step further, bragging about their £2000+ RTX 4090 they've perhaps just upgraded too. Decades ago, I loved spending money upgrading. It was worth it, but now.... Basically more people need to get their heads screwed on, tune in and listen to what your saying otherwise it's just going to carry on to no end. I think the last memorable game I ever played and absolutely loved (and still do) was 'Little Big Adventure'. I purchased and completed both 1 and 2, back in the 90's. I always hoped for a 3rd instalment, but sadly it never happened. Keep up the good work Mack and keep slagging these developers for their poor implementations. But at the same time, just be careful, all these developers are going to hunt you down one day because you're ruining their future plans with you honesty. Remember what happened to Jesus, he got crucified.
