Can Donald Duck Fly?

Let’s understand once and for all whether or not Donald Duck can fly. Does he need a hot air balloon, a plane, a magic carpet, or pixie dust to fly? Or is he similar to regular ducks and can soar with his wings? By looking at Donald’s stories from World War II all the way to the House of Mouse, Kingdom Heart II, Fantasia 2000, Mickey’s Philharmagic and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, I think we finally have an answer!

Scrooge is old and crotchety so he’s definitely not the best family swimmer. Coin diving in his vault doesn’t count. Donald regularly swims in the cartoons to escape his enemies, and he was also a navy man in WWII so he can definitely swim. The short “swimmin hole” and Mickey Mouse clubhouse frequently feature him swimming with his friends. Why he or Daisy Duck can’t fly I’ll never know. Apparently by Disney logic an elephant can fly, but a duck can’t? 🦆

I definitely wish Donald Duck would win ... however, ... don't forget that the most kid-friendly Disney characters are a lot more humane and kindhearted that practically any Looney Tune. I can clearly expect Mickey, Donald and Goofy 'fighting' with cushions, water guns and cakes - while Bugs Bunny and Daffy would go after them with chainsaws and dynamite. Also, in Disney cartoons, if someone aims a gun at Donald, either he won't shoot or he'll miss his target. Meanwhile, in Looney Tunes cartoons, characters can suffer incredible bodily harm (such as amputation) or even die- only to recover shortly after. So, on one hand, we have humane and kind characters who are not immortal and, on the other hand, we have cruel psychopaths with the most dangerous weapons and the will to maim and kill. Once again, I really wish Donald Duck would win, but the 'fight' would really be a one-sided gore fest.

I like to think of the personified animals in Disney like humans vs. primates. Donald isn't strictly a duck but is more like distantly related to one. Many primates can effortlessly climb trees and swing using tails; humans cannot. (But humans can speak and use tools while many primates cannot)

I think because Donald Duck is really bad at flying, and it takes extraordinary effort and circumstances for him to do so, he is far less likely to ever take it for granted. It will always be a magical thing for him, because he has to work so hard for it. And hang in there. We all feel overwhelmed and frustrated at times. And you are correct, that never goes away completely. We tend to be our own worst critics, and while you may feel uncreative, and tapped out, just take a look at all the people here who show up to hear what you have to say. And most importantly, Take care of yourself. There is no shame in saying that you need to take a break to recharge, or take a step back and reevaluate how you want to do something. Your real fans will surely understand if you just need to take a break for a bit. I'll leave off with a flying story from a coworker of mine, years ago. He was a chef, and I found out he had a pilot's licence. I asked why he worked in a kitchen instead of flying. He was very emphatic is stating he would NEVER take a job as a pilot. He told me that flying was his passion, and and favorite hobby. And if he ever did it for a living, there would, inevitably, be a day where he would wake up, and not want to go in. And on that day, flying would become "work". And he never wanted it to get to that point. Draw any parallels you feel are appropriate. Or none, if I am totally off base. But either way, take care of yourself, and thank you for what you do.

Also I would like to mention one of the BEST SNES games that i've ever played in my life, Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow, a game that stars Donald and in that game he doesn't fly too, there are moments that he could benefit from it, but the closest you get to that, if my memory is correct, is him floating on the gust of wind pipes.

Daffy can fly cause he’s a wild duck whereas Donald is based on a breed known as the American Pekin duck which is a domesticated breed. Pekin ducks are way too bottom heavy to be able to fly anyway. Even if you compare the body structures of Donald and Daffy you’ll notice that Daffy has a slimmer build. If the two ever face off it’ll be an interesting matchup. Tough to say since Donald does have god tier magic on his side. Daffy does have abilities of his own especially really strong with toon force so who knows. I’m sure Donald won’t go to his Zettaflare unless it’s needed. That’s why it’s considered a forbidden spell.

Donald Duck usually wears a shirt and/or jacket. These cover most of his wings, including about half of his primary flight feathers as well as all of his secondary and tertiary flight feathers. It's no surprise he can't fly. I would be surprised if he COULD fly!

I actually have a copy of Mickey's Philharmagica filmed at Hong Kong Disneyland from off KZbin on a USB. Saw it twice myself in person back in 2012 (first in Hong Kong Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland (hearing it in Japanese after hearing it in English was definitely a bit confusing to my brain at the time)). Another simpler but possible (although I don't doubt, very unlikely and very outlandish) theory could honestly be Donald's stance. The reason most species of domestic duck are incapable of flight has been shown to result from their more upright stances they take, which inhibits the center of gravity for them compared to wild ducks like mallards for example. And this isn't to say domestic ducks can't fly altogether, as they are capable of very brief, short bursts of "flight", but they do not fly like wild ducks can for long periods and hours on end. As flight for domesticated upright species of duck takes incredible amounts of effort, just as you expressed that we see in Donald.

Funfact: In the comics by Carl Barks, Donald Duck flies so often that he probably has a pilot's license for planes. And it doesn't matter if it's a big cargo plane or small rain maker because he can fly the any plane the story needs. But yeah, Donald can't fly like normal flyimg birds.
