Having lived in Northern N.J. for 62 years and owning only 4x4 trucks since 1981, I can tell you that 4 wheel drive makes a real difference in driving in snow and ice. Power to the front wheels will pull you into the turn when making a turn and gives you much better control overall. Of course the proper tire helps.

Driving a 2x4 truck is comparable to drinking decaf coffee and non-alcoholic beer.
@RobMotive26 күн бұрын
I don't drink either 🤣
@westcoastplinkin655926 күн бұрын
So when you daily drive in the city do you daily drive in 4WD? 😂😂😂
@cutlerylover25 күн бұрын
funny analogy but did you know non alcoholic beer has alcohol in it and decaf coffee has caffeine in it? lol Ive drank non alcoholic beer in a few situations where I was at a party but had to drive home...Im not a fan of decaf coffee though

Just got my first 4x4 tacoma today traded in my 2wd , I will say that 2wd tacoma got me through 4 hunting seasons without getting stuck , though I was close a few times and did make a handful of u turns to find better looking trials to drive out 😂

I have always had a four wheel drive pickup in all the many pickups that I have owned! You may not need it all the time but when the road conditions call for it, it is very ensuring to know that you can turn on the four drive and feel safe!

1, heat works great, 2024 Tacoma in upstate New York, the heated seats get HOT and the heated steering wheel real good. 2. So far MPG around 18-19. 3. Do not use parttime four wheel drive when the road is just wet. WIll burn the system out or cause tire damage. Parttime needs to be used on loose surfaces -- snow, mud, sand, etc.
@ScottS-t3j26 күн бұрын
Great comment, yes I agree you cannot use part time all wheel drive just of the roads are wet it’s not gonna allow enough slippage for the wheels the transfer case will probably blow up after time just not good, I had to use it on my old GMC I used to have to get out of my slippery driveway onto a dry road, as soon as I hit the dry pavement started bucking, Felt terrible I knew what I had to do but I had to get out of the driveway I didn’t throw it out of four-wheel-drive soon enough
@ScottS-t3j26 күн бұрын
Yeah Rob four-wheel-drive is nonsense even on a wet road you don’t need it just where the wheels can slip when you turn, and even a wet road isn’t enough slippage for the tires you feel it jerking back-and-forth as you turn that’s not good for the transfer case!!😎

Just so you know Rob whenever I'm tuned to other KZbinr's who come across real nice 2wd Tacoma's I refer to those trucks as a Robmotive dream machine. It usually gets a few laughs.😉

In the rain only time you need 4x4 is in the mountains empty bed, however a 4x2 is like dcaf coffee or non alcoholic beer, fake truck, as the other guy said, also hurts reselling.

Interesting timing for this topic, I have the 3rd gen offroad and 2 days ago I put it into 4WD to go offroad and it malfunctioned??? I got an error that stated there was a malfunction going from 2wd-4wd take it to your dealer which I did and its still there, they cant figure out the problem they have to contact the main Toyota hub for help, lol...I googled it and after 2 minutes of research found its more common than I thought and possibly a bad soldering point on a the actuator...some guys resolder it better and its fixed others guys had the entire part replaced by Toyotas only to have the same issue again down the road...veery disappointing to say the least..

It's a good idea take your truck on a drive and put in 4x4 high & low at least once a month.The actuator and the other components of the 4X4 system need to be cycled periodically. You don't want to let those parts seize up from lack of use and go to use it only to have it not work.

I have to go with the 4wd in my truck because I live in snow country. I bought the 2024 TRD OR to get the rear differential locker to deal with deep snow and can put a 33” tire on without suspension or wheel-well modification. My wife has AWD on her Highlander hybrid. Just what you do in my state. I agree with you about not needing 4wd in Texas. I went to college in NE Texas and it snowed a few times every winter but I did fine with my 2wd car.
@Invisible190026 күн бұрын
In situations like the one you were in, a truck that had 4 wheel drive auto would have worked like a charm. The minute it would sense any wheel slipage or something similar, 4x4 would automatically activate . This will solve from someone physically changing it to 4x4.
@Dfqt0sa_trd_offroad26 күн бұрын
O ly time ove used 4 wheel drive has been in two short offroading trips. Otherwise it's always been in 2wd. I do live in Los Angeles. I got the trd offroad in case I keep going offroading. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

4X4 option will always bring higher resale and wider buyer market. Even if traded at dealer.
@RobMotive26 күн бұрын
A wider market for sure. As for the money, I would think so as they cost more to buy.

I live in Florida and have a boat, because of the light back end I need 4 wheel to get my boat up next to my garage. Also if I launch my boat at a sandy launch or a steep launch 4 wheel is a must. I just didn’t want to be limited.

Could the fuel economy you are getting be a result of those tires you have? My Tacoma is totally stock from the factory and I'm getting 22 mpg. Just saying.

Possibly, but they really aren’t hugely different from stock.

What will help you, being in a 2wd. Swap that diff our for a Eaton Tru-Trac. I had one in a 2wd grand cherokee and it made a world of difference....made it far more useable in slick conditions

I was with you till you said 4x4 in snow only helps on take off. You don’t have to defend your purchase. I totally agree with 90 percent of what you said. But up here on okc you can ask anyone. 4x4 does much much better in all ice/snow situations. Hell front wheel drive does better than rear wheel drive. Just my 2 cents.

2nd may be fine if you live in a sunny climate and stay on regular roads. You are quite limited with your truck if you want to do a road trip across the country or travelled outside of Texas in the winter. Would you chance a trip to Ohio this time of year with your 2nd Tacoma.
@RobMotive26 күн бұрын
I absolutely would. I lived up north for many years and took several trips with 2wd. It was never really necessary.

Rob, Rob, Rob…you are sensitive about the 2WD, and continue to miss the most salient point on why people gripe that you don’t have a 2024 4WD Tacoma. It’s because you are a Toyota KZbin “influencer” and the Tacoma you own and modify and create countless videos on should represent the majority of Tacoma owners, and one of the major reasons Tacomas are so popular. 4WD. Sure many never turn that 4HI/4LO dial but many do like me RIGHT NOW in Maines winter snow and sleet. You certainly don’t need 4WD where you live, as well as many others. But you do need 4WD to maintain credibility when airing videos about all things Toyota Tacoma. JMO. 🤷🏼♂️
