Great review. I have the Levo SL here in Albuquerque, New Mexico and love it. Based on many reviews, I think it depends mostly on the type of trails you are riding. If I were riding trails such as in your video with very long uphill slogs, I'd definitely want the full Levo. For the trails, I ride, with short uphill sections or longer much more gradual climbing, the SL is perfect. I love how it handles like my other Giant Anthem FS and I don't ever feel like I am on an EMTB except when I am going uphill. I am so happy EMTBs were invented in my lifetime 💓! My only regret is that I didn't go for the carbon SL while I was on such a $pending $pree!

Glad you liked the video. Been awhile since I made that one. I am reviewing a Fazua motor next week that is 50Nm so keen to see what that is like. I agree that the turbo levo is not better than the SL or vice versa it depends on what you ride and importantly with who. If you ride with people on normal bikes then the SL is perfect. If you ride with people on full power e bikes then it can be a struggle to keep up. Horses for courses.

After test riding the trek 9.8 then the turbo levo, for some reason something didn't feel right. Lastly test rode the SL, got back to the shop and ordered the carbon comp in black. As my lbs said the sl is a mountain bike with a motor and not a big motor with a bike built around that. Yes the motor whines a little but doesn't put me off at all. Horses for course's tho, where I live there is no massively steep rocky trails around, so the full power models are over kill. The SL is perfect for me. Absolutely love it.

I love how it essentially looks and supposedly rides like a Stumpy, with a bit of electric assistance. A bike you still have to do a workout on, but not so that you absolutely stop at a steeper ascent. Just wish the engine and battery was a bit stronger. Might be a strong contender if I choose to go EMTB come spring (other options are Orbea Rise H30 or M20)

Just bought an sl and love it, having come off an evil insurgent (itself a great enduro bike but now surplus to requirements in most circumstances). But as you say if I was used to a normal e bike it would be too slow! As it is, it’s a definite upgrade and I very rarely feel like I need more power. In fact my Strava stats and heart rate traces show that every ride out I do is harder work than anything I’ve done before. Result!

The SL is a great bike. Hoping to try the kenevo SL if we ever get out of lockdown. Everyone I know with the levo sl loves it. My problem is I am over weight unfit and lazy so I tend to use full power most of the time. You get addicted to more power.

Just found this video, nice review by the way. My Stepdad @74 years old just replaced his old Powerfly5 with a new Levo SL comp carbon and loves it, but I was worried it would make him work too hard. He's fit as a fiddle but at his age it's still a concern. I wish he would have gotten a full power bike. I have a 2022 Rail 9 GX and we ride together most of the time. We'd usually ride in either eco or tour, more so tour if there is any hills. I am beginning to think we should swap bikes, I rarely use Emtb and almost never use Turbo unless I am running late to meet him at the trails. Speaking of Tour I actually just had it remapped with Tour lite as I found the regular Tour gave too much assistance. Not after any advice, just thought i'd share my thoughts.

The whole concept of the Levo SL was born out of analyzing rider surveys and analyzing rider data from the Mission Control App. Named surveys showed that a very high amount of Levo riders rather rarely utilize the Turbo mode and lower their default Eco and Trail mode settings slightly at the same time. And i for one ,can absolutely relate to these results as i did exactly the same thing on my Levo right after the very first ride. I found Eco default a bit too pushy and Trail unnecessarily close to Turbo. That combined with the nr.1 wish 99 % of all E-bike owners express in every single survey : "It would be really nice if the bike was a bit lighter", ultimately led to the birth of the Levo SL. . Steep uphill sections are only a minor part of my riding style. While Turbo mode certainly comes in handy for really steep stuff, and when im exhausted after shredding too hard, Eco and Trail mode respectively are my usual choice for any kind of blue or black trail. The Turbo Levo is a Trail/Enduro bike, and while it is certainly within its capabilities, it was not meant to be All-Mountain. Has Specialized managed to nail the sweet spot in the power/weight compromise ? The jury is still out on that. But i think its safe to say that the SL is not just an experiment but the start of a split of E-MTB design into two new paths. We will see more of those super light bikes with less powered motors and smaller batteries coming from all the other manufacturers in the coming years. At least until some new tech breakthroughs appear on the market which make full power motors and batteries lighter. Needless to say that a 16 kilogramm E-MTB with the power and endurance of a full power E-bike is the dream we all have. ;-)

Thanks for the comprehensive comment. I agree with everything you say and have friends who think the sl is the best option. I also know people who ride the turbo levo in echo most of the time. I was riding for 4 hours yesterday in Rotorua. I have mine set 50-100% and only used this all day. I will only ever use echo if I have range anxiety. I spent the day mostly seasoning jump tracks. I loved the weight and feel of the SL but not enough to give up the power. I think you are right and will see two types of bikes develop.

7:18 This statement is so accurate to my experience. I demoed one recently and thought it was overpowered. I guess I'm used to the acoustic bikes. That boost mode was way too much. I found that boost mode on technical climbs was almost impossible to tame and would give power when I didn't need it. The funny thing is, that I fell in love with the extra sprung mass on the DH. I'm definitely planning on getting a Zerode soon.
@bestdayevermtb2

You will love the Zerode. My Levo is set up in trail mode at 65 to 100% of power. The more power you put in the more the bike gives. Never use boost mode. In fact converted boost into a slightly more powerful echo mode.

I have both and perfer the sl. I'm a fairly strong rider though and only have friends with non-ebikes. I ride the sl on 25% power and its plenty for me to keep up very strong riders comfortably and feels much closer to a non ebike in terms of weight and maneuverability. Keep in mind my standard turbo levo was the last generation that was a 27.5 with 3inch plus size tires. This probably has something to do with me liking the sl better. I feel that the sl was designed specifically for someone like me!!! I'm in love... I do agree though the gear driven sl motor is a little whiny compared to the belt driven motor of the standard levo. That being said though, you get used to the whine after a while and it doesn't bother me anymore. Great video! Keep up the good work..

Greetings from Dunedin 🙋‍♀️ Have only just discovered your channel; am so glad I did! I love the content AND the fact you ride Specialized because I'm looking to purchase the 2022 Turbo Levo (500Wh). Took one for a test ride today and a noticeable difference in the Brose 2.2 compared to the Bosch CX Gen4 (which is in the Haibike) I rented in Rotorua last month. I'm completely green to eMTB, but even I noticed just how different the two motors function. Do you find the Turbo Levo has more of a ... natural, organic feel. You definitely know youre still putting in the effort but you're getting that bit extra help from the motor. Whereas the Bosch is very quick on the uptake, it fires instantly, immediate power, I said to myself 😳😳 "Bloody hell Fran, hold on woman this thing friggin' goes!!" 🤣

I am glad you like the channel, so welcome on board. I am not currently riding a Specialized but have a KTM with a Bosch motor. I love this bike, saying that I did review the 2022 turbo levo recently and very much enjoyed that bike. I think both those motors are good choices. One of my reasons for getting rid of the Levo was the motor reliability. I was on my third motor when I sold and I know people who have done more motors than that. I think this issue has been resolved with the new model, fingers crossed. One good thing about Specialized is they tend to be good on warranty's. You mentioned getting a 500Wh battery. Personally I would not be keen on this at all. Everyone is different but I have a 625Wh battery and bought a second battery so I can swap it out at lunch time. The golden rule is you never want to have the smallest battery in a group unless you are very light and fit. Neither of those apply to me. I know a guy who bought an S works levo with a 500 Wh battery but then bought a Scott Ransom with 1125Wh because that is what is friends rode. Either way good luck with your new purchase.

I am still in two minds. I tried a standard Turbo Levo in the shop car park the other day. I was very impressed but it was the first time ever on an electric bike for me. What I didn't like was the huge size or bulk of the bike and I definitely didn't like the price. I have now found a Turbo levo SL Comp online new for 1000 euros less than the full fat version. So my inclination is to get it but of course I am worried that I might really need the more powerful version. I don't ride this type of trail and downhill shown in your excursion I am an old duffer who does some off road tracks and green lanes but mainly back lanes and cinder track or old railway lines etc. I am finding it really hard to make a decision.

honestly as an average rider who likes to do some light trails on a weekend, pop some wheelie attempts, do a few bunny hops, you would not notice much of a difference in the weight between the levo and the SL. I have tried both and i'm a very casual 34 year old rider coming from a childhood of mocking about on a mountainbike with no suspensions. i would go Levo over the SL purely because it can make your day THAT much longer when you can go back up without tiring too much out. (need to say that if you are well fit than the SL would be enough, but even more so with the Levo) an SL comp for 1000 eur i'd watch out becauseeven the earlier 2017 model is atleast double. (but maybe im wrong) Hope this helps honestly people should get out and get these because they simply extend your life's worth. no matter Levo SL or Levo.

To be honest if the SL was as powerful as E-bikes came then we would all be happy with that. If you ride the Turbo Levo then the SL you notice the difference. The SL is great if you like a lighter bike and often suits people who ride with non e-bikers as it gives enough assistance to ride with people fitter than you. If you have an SL and you ride with friends with full fat e-bikes you will struggle to keep up unless very fit. To be honest you will enjoy either bike. I recently reviewed the latest Turbo Levo and did like that bike, it felt significantly better than the older model. Good luck.

Perhaps the biggest distinction that your video doesn’t quite express is the range difference. The Levo will get you about 20miles, but the SL will nearly double that when you add the range extender. Easily close to 30miles on the SL without the range extender. I have the SL and buddy rides Levo, although he is definitely faster getting up the hills, when we ride, I always come back with about 40-50% juice left in the battery. I personally like the extra workout I get riding the SL, and usually prefer, more technical and squirrelly rides - so the bike is perfect for me. Coming up on nearly 500 miles in the last six months of owning the bike, with a lot of hard riding and zero issues.
@bestdayevermtb2

That is certainly interesting. I must admit I had the bike for just two rides so don't have your experience on it but I didn't get the impression I was getting more range rather the reverse. Did you friend have a 500 or a 700 battery in his Levo? Either way they are both fun bikes and will suit different styles of rider. The Levo is more suited to unfit lazy people like me and the sl for people who like to put more effort in.

He has full 700w. Same experience with several others who also ride levo vs SL. Indeed both great bikes. But with clearly different intentions and aims. I bought the Kenevo SL in February. I live in Japan, and they only sell the SL models (Kenevo and Levo). The power and torque of the SL motor is not that great. It helps, obviously, when climbing, but I think riders who drop down from a regular Kenevo / Levo to an SL model will be disappointed. The SL models only have about 30 Nm vs. 90 Nm of a regular Turbo Kenevo / Levo.

@celineferdinand6944
@celineferdinand6944 Жыл бұрын
@@bestdayevermtb2 Yes, only low powered e bikes are sold in Japan. The law in Japan allows for only Class 2 e bikes, which is no more than something like 20 km/h. Regular powered e bikes like your Turbo Levo are not legal in Japan. But if you're riding on private land / property, I suppose that is not a problem. It's just if you are riding it out in public or on the street that you are breaking the law in Japan. So Specialized only sells the SL models here. But in neighboring countries of Taiwan and Korea, the regular Turbo models are sold. I might buy a regular Turbo Levo in Korea and bring it to Japan where I live. But the problem would be if the motor breaks down or needs maintenance. I would have to box it up and take it back to Korea, or Taiwan, to get serviced / parts.

@bestdayevermtb2 4 жыл бұрын
@@axiomic I personally wouldn't say there is a massive difference on technical descents, but I guess a lighter bike will be more agile at slow speed and as you pointed out the shorter chainstay will make it easier to manual. This is helpful when dropping off things at slow speed also.
@koho
@koho 4 жыл бұрын
@@axiomic The weight definitely makes a difference when you're moving the bike around under you. All the little weight shifts, unweighting the front to get over rocks, etc., I found difficult on the normal Levo. And on steeps, the regular Levo just had too much inertia. You are right about the chainstays - the SL is still heavy, but the short stays mean you can get your butt back easily and unweight the front. A better rider than me would be able to manual it with good technique. Interestingly, I like the added weight of the SL downhill - it gets kicked around less than my "acoustic" bike. Hi Ricky. I am 176cm and not proud of my weight currently at 90kg. I was riding a large not xl. E bikes are affected by the weight of the rider so you should fly up the hill. To be honest power is relative. The SL will feel very powerful if you have never had an e bike before and will feel more like a normal bike downhill. Thanks for the honest comparison. I was laughing a little bit, because in the past 10 years, bikes got lighter and lighter and every actual test claims, that this or that bike is too heavy not nimble and hard to maneuver - so go and buy a lighter one - or manufacturers, go an build lighter ones. Thats the time when CARBON hits the market. This also is the case for Downhill Bikes. So in the end E-MTBs are 21-24kg heavy Downhillers, like the ones in the eary 2000. And you say that´s ok and you will not go back. So what do we learn out of this? It´s all about marketing, that let us buy new bikes over and over again...! Myself ride a 8 years old 16kg AM bike with 26" tyres and love it. On epic tours, on flowy trails and in bikepark. It is my do it all bike. Never get used to bigger tyres than 27.5....

You make some great points. I have fallen into the trap of buying new bikes and have always been frustrated that nothing from the old bike fits on the new one. I have three different diameter dropper posts in my garage not to mention three wheel sizes. I do love the feel of a super light nimble bike especially when climbing but an E bike is so different the power makes the bike feel more maneuverable and the weight makes it feel stable at speed. Saying that I would rather ride the SL for its weight if it came with the power of the turbo levo.

I'm not sure if this is a compliment but you ride as someone at least 10 years younger than you look, I think that was a compliment? Lol. Anyway, I have a full-power eMTB and normally use it in assistance mode 2/4 and do pretty long rides. The thing I like however is being able to kick it up into assistance mode 3/4 or even 4/4 if I encounter a really strong headwind, a muddy field or snow etc. I've ridden my eMTB on trails in feet deep snow in the winter with plus size tires, that's a lot of fun but also takes a lot of power. Don't think smaller motors and batteries are for me, if anything a 700-800Wh battery but the same weight would be great. Oh, and the component lifespan and maintenance costs need to improve. Boring as it sounds chains and cassettes are way to expensive for what they are.
@bestdayevermtb2
@bestdayevermtb2 3 жыл бұрын
I will take the compliment. I think I am different to many e bikers. Like yourself many people say they use low power and go for long rides. I set mine to 55-100% power and leave it in that. This means a lot of the time I am using 100% output. The only time I don't do this is if I think the battery will run out. Last week did 60km ride using only 30% but this is the exception. If I had a bigger battery I would have done the 60km in 100%. In my mind there is no such thing as too much power. Don't even get me started on the speed restriction as I hate that. As for drive trains, can not agree more. Next e bike I get I am going to remove the drive train put a cheap one on then when I sell the bike put the original one back on.

I think a full sus may be kinder on your back but riding position may be more important. Maybe look at shorter stem and some riser bars or even a stem extender to really straighten up your riding position. If you are doing a lot of road riding, then you don't need the power so much. I have a E road bike and use echo 90% of the time. It is very easy to exceed the motor cut out on the road so the SL will be easier to pedal over 25 or 32 depending on where you are. The big disadvantage will be range. You will get a lot less range on the SL. You need to factor that into your decision. I also made a video recently comparing the Trek Rail to the Trek Fuel EXe which is a similar comparison.

This bike has to be ridden from the cyclists perspective. If you are already a cyclist and just want some e-bike, its perfect. If you come from a full blown ebike you'll be disappointed. The SL needs to be ridden like a 2 stroke dirt bike whereas the Standard Levo is ridden like a very torquey 4 stroke. As in, you need RPM and you need to keep it in a power band. This review, while great, is a little biased. Esoecislly coming from an expert and comparing it to the grossly heavy SL comp aluminum. My Lrvo SL Sworks is wonderful.

Thanks for an excellent personal summary! It helps me in my decision making process. Here is a concern of mine regarding motors on eMtb: - Specialized is having HUGE sales volume, and they are having a "large" number of motor failures. their SL motor has significantly lower power than their turbo (non-SL) motor ... and I think many riders are pushing the motor to it's max limits, and burning the motors out, likely because of repeatedly OVERHEATING the small motor. - The Orbea (brand) Rise has a SIGNIFICANTLY stronger motor (if I understand correctly it is basically a detuned larger motor), and perhaps it is less likely to overheat. I dunno. Note that **I do not own either bike, but am a Professional Design Engineer** so, that said: - My thoughts are as follows: Bicycle engineers push design limits on their designs, in all areas, due to the NEED for higher performance at a lower weight & lower price. BUT, in 90% of all engineering designs (various engineering disciplines) we build in HUGE MARGINS (called a safety margin even though it rarely has to do with physical safety. Rather Safety margin = Failure margin) to prevent premature failures & a mode of failure we call infant morality. One example is pressure ratings: We would test for zero failures at 4x the rated pressure. This kind of margin is normal in the MOTOR industry. I'm thinking that 15% margin is common in the battery industry (poor heat dissipation being "the" common mode of failure) .. BUT, this is not the thinking of your typical bicycle designer.... they are likely building in a 3% or maybe a 5% "safety margin" Specialized simply needs a larger motor if they are going to tune (program) their motors to put out the kind of energy they are specifying - BUT, who am I?

I am no expert when it comes to motors. My Brose motor failed twice due to belt failure. This is common and well documented. Both occasions it broke was early in the ride and not doing much work at the time. I don't know the failure rate for the SL motor but understand it is a lot less as it has no belt. I am currently on a Bosch motor well actually my second one as the first failed. I believe the failure rate for Bosch is around 5%. Still pretty high. Imagine if 5% of Toyota hulux motors had to be replaced? Apparently the battery failure rate is even higher but luckily I have not had any battery issues. The Rise has the shimano ep8 motor reduced to 60nM. This may be a good option. If you haven't seen it I did review this bike and thought 60nM felt OK whereas the SL felt really under powered to me. I do think e bikes are in their infancy and will improve.

I own a levo SL, It has been in the bike shop since April 2023, it’s now august 2023. Specialized has been absolutely NO help. It’s waiting on a motor. Last summer it waited for a shock, the summer before, a bearing hub and crank. It’s been an absolute lemon piece of shit. It has 190 miles on it total in 3 years, it has been in the shop waiting for crap the rest of the time. It is a $9000 piece of garbage. I’ve called rider care. Started a case, no call back from management in 2 weeks. NEVER, EVER again. I will never ever buy a specialized product again.

That sounds awful. Where are you based? I haven't had a specialized for a few years now but did find their customer service very good. I blew up two Levo motors and had new ones within a week. I hope you can get it sorted.

@@bestdayevermtb2 I am in New Jersey. It has currently been at a bike shop in somerset, NJ since May. 1 week prior to that it sat in a bike shop from the beginning of April in New Brunswick, NJ. Thank you for your reply. I am miserable with this bike and this experience. I called rider care every day this week during my lunch hour. Every day got the same recording “due to the time of year…we are experiencing high call volumes…..” waited each day, for my entire lunch hour, never with anyone picking up.

I really feel for you. I think they should at least provide you with another bike to ride while yours is out of action. I would try to go higher up the food chain. Try some e mails to Specialized head office. If you can get to the right person, they could solve your issues in a matter of days. In NZ we have the consumer goods act, not sure what they have in the states. Taking them to court may speed up the process. Good luck.

@@bestdayevermtb2 they would not give me a loaner. I asked. They claim that they don’t have loaners. I then said, well then…give me a press bike. They claimed that they don’t have press bikes. They are liars, that’s all there is to it. All day long, I can watch you tubers ride, with “press bikes” that were loaned to them, free of charge for weeks. But yet, me as a customer, that paid 9000 usd (I have a levo SL Expert Carbon) they won’t even give me the time of the day. I’m going to try to email, and send a certified letter this weekend. Again…it’s august 19 today; I haven’t had a bike to ride since April, when I took it out for the first time of our spring. Prior to that I didn’t ride it since last summer

I must admit of late I have been thinking I should paint my Levo lemon yellow as it has been at the shop more nights than at my home. What motor do you think is best?. The latest Bosch looked good but now the new Shimano motor has just been released.

@@bestdayevermtb2 Easy tigers, each brand has issues. Giant can't even get washed before breaking. Bosch rattles to death and also has a failure rate higher than Spesh. Shimano EP8 has been recalled due to problems! Over and above Spesh selling MANY more bikes than other brands they only hav 3% failures. They offer the best warranty out of all manufacturers. Rather the devil you know!!

SL is a far superior bike to any real rider. The SL can still be pedaled up hill without any issues. I can still get a really good workout on the SL. The levo is seriously a lazy mans bike.

It is great to see people are still finding this video. I love your sense of humour and irony. E bikers have been called lazy and not real riders for some time now. The idea that we now have a class of e bike with a smaller motor and these riders are calling other e bikers lazy is absolutely hysterical. 😁😁😁

It really is a good bike...I just got back from Santa Cruz Ca and it is filled with hardlines and crazy climbs and in all honesty I pushed on those climbs without any assistance. After about 30 miles I started to feel the fatigue and having that magic button is great and honestly somewhat rewarding after a hard ride. After trying the full E levo, its just too easy and really makes no since. To be honest I was on the fence with the SL until I tried it and really it's almost the perfect bike. My opinion anyway~

I got the levo turbo and beleive me in eco mode you cannot be lazy lol i still range a high heart rate and sweat so its not lazy! I just get around trails x5 instead of one lap time is precious to me so the ebike as helped me get back riding and enjoy riding! Best thing i ever spent money on!!!!cars are lazy

@@Emtbwebb I can see that as being a thing for people who are having a hard time riding. In all honesty though the problem is that eco is full turbo on the SL. Most people wont sit in eco when you have that turbo button waiting to be pushed. Thats what makes the bike lazy. Everyone is trying to do things faster instead of enjoying the ride and enjoying their time.

@@Emtbwebb I think it is just so funny that one e biker calls another e biker lazy. You can put the bike in turbo and sprint up a steep hill. Your heart rate will go through the roof. What ever bike you have the fact you are riding is all good.
