Duolingo is one of the most popular language learning apps with over 5 million users. The app claims to teach you a language for free, how good is it really? I've tried every Spanish learning method - from books, apps, real-life practice, and more - and seen hundreds of students go from knowing no Spanish to fluency. Watch as I put Duolingo's Spanish lessons to the test and see if Duolingo can really make you fluent in Spanish. Thank you for watching, you're awesome :) New videos every Saturday.
👋 Hola, I'm Nate. I used to not know any Spanish at all, and I had no interest in learning the language. I thought learning Spanish would be boring, a waste of time, and would provide no value to my life. Then I started taking Spanish classes in high school and everything changed for me. I struggled with learning the language a lot at first, but thanks to my teachers and my Spanish speaking friends, they helped make the learning process fun. Within a few months, I had gotten to a conversational level, but more important, I had become a more confident person. The real win for me, though, was the friendships I made and strengthened. I discovered that not only did I have higher self esteem, but being out in the real world with people, whether old friends or new ones I met, made me feel more alive and connected with the world around me. Now it's my goal to create videos that make you smile and inspire you to learn Spanish or another language!

As a C1 Spanish speaker after 3 years of learning, duolingo was GREAT for learning vocabulary. But it's important to read books, consume Spanish content, and take 1 to 1 classes to actually practice speaking and putting sentences together while thinking on the spot. No one can ever expect to speak a language without speaking it

For me, the best way I learn a language is TV(shows), podcasts and books. Reading especially is great because words get repeated (so its almost like flash cards for me) and used in different ways and you get new vocab.

I'm close to 4yrs on duolingo. I find it useful for 2 primary reasons. 1)It works as a daily reminder to work on my Spanish. 2) I screenshot questions/issues I have with translations or grammar and then use it in my italki lessons with my teachers to talk about it more in depth. Also, I do find some of the repetition of new vocabulary words helpful. Especially minus being able to use them in my everyday Spanish conversations, which tend to be basic "como estas/pasa un bien día" type of thing

For me Duolingo is a great start then later bilingual preaching in churches helped me to build my language confidence...

I second that. You can learn a tremendous amount passively whilst hearing sermons simultaneously in 2 separate languages. Eg, I learnt & it was solidified in my brain immediately by the Spanish preacher, "lavarme con tu sangre". You're the first person I've ever heard anywhere, talk about this particular method of language learning. It is very effective indeed.

That was fun...probably because it was easy, and you made it interactive. While I never use the Duolingo app, I will say their bilingual podcasts are wonderful.

Hey Nate, great video as always. Two things I noticed that you are might already be aware of: 0:53 this sentence does make sense. "me oyes" (assuming this is the part that you were confused by) is a pretty common muletilla meaning "got it?" or something to that effect. 2:00 "sentirse" is actually not a reflexive verb (it's pronominal) although it's taught as one for the sake of simplification. same with acordarse (levantarse is a debatable one) Good stuff as always! My opinion of Duolingo has flip-flopped so much over the years. Al fin y al cabo, I agree with you that it's nothing more than a supplement (although a quite good one, all things being equal).

Nick! I was thinking today: I think you might consider being an English teacher to native Spanish speakers, instead of teaching Spanish to native English speakers. Acaso the market and need to teach native hispanohablantes inglés es bien grande

I highly recommend Duolingo. I used Duolingo to learn Portuguese. I would combine it with a high school textbook that has a supplemental exercise/lab book with answers.

Hola Nate y muchísimas gracias por otro video tan chévere!! ;). Thanks for doing this Duolingo review. So I think I'm somewhere around B2 in Spanish according to CEFR. I'm a native English speaker, learned German fluently in my early 20s when I was posted there and I still speak it very fluently. That was way before the Internet, soy viejito" jejeje .. I just very recently started learning Portuguese and due to this video think I'll give it a whirl with Duolingo. For the record I've never used a learning app in my life but looks like it could be fun. Dicho esto, creo que eso es lo que de malo como aprendizaje idiomas hoy en día. La gente se toman asimismo demasiado en serio. Es por eso voy a acercar el idioma Portuguese sólo para divertirme y vamos a ver qué tal. :)) Saludos desde Isle Vancouver

I took 4 years of Spanish in high school and was conversational when I graduated I'm 46 so very very rusty I have been doing Duolingo for about a year and I'm fluent and conversational. My son went to Japan and for about 8 months before the trip he did he used it for Japanese and was conversational when he went there and it saved their lives because nobody speaks English there. So it does seem nonsensical in some places but I don't even know how it works but eventually you do completely understand like I just understood the lessons you were doing without even having to think. It's definitely something that builds over time. But completely worth it.

Totally. I am learning Spanish for fun and brain health and eventually I will go somewhere. I do about 15 min a day of duo and I try for an hour of dreaming Spanish. The progress is slow but steady.

i personally have found duolingo useless.. the way i learn languages the fastest is just.. talking. obviously first study the grammar, whether that be through youtube videos or other online resources, understand that and get the basics down and then start having conversations. from there on if you can hold a basic level conversation just keep talking and talking with natives or other people who are learning the language. this way you can accustom yourselves to the different accents earlier on and comprehend better moving forward. i do this through discord servers dedicated to learning certain languages, and its been the most helpful tool thus far for me. according to my experience, i have never had a native make fun of me for the way i talk or anything else like that, and have always been helped when i did something wrong. don't be afraid, you've gotta talk to somebody in the language at some point if you're planning on being able to communicate it!
