A excellent point was made that the fireflies Marlene, asked Joel what would Ellie do given a choice. She would probably sacrifice herself. But the Fireflies never asked Ellie they sedated her and then prepared to kill her without asking her.

It's Ashley Johnson yall, and that girl deserves all the praise. She's amazing as ellies voice actor but insane as ellies mom for the short few times she's in this. And since you haven't had kids let me explain yes she was still connected to the imbillical cord just long enough to get a small amount of the virus in her because it's in the blood stream and everything that's in mom immediately starts going into the baby via the cord and that's what made her immune. That house was her teams base that's why she went their. She was looking for her team members and best friend. She was waiting for them to return to take the baby that's why she had the knife to her throat, in case she started turning before they got bk and took ellie

It’s my theory when Ellie’s mom was bit it was a very short time until then her cord was cut that just a small amount of the virus got into her. Not enough to entirely infect her, but just enough for Ellie’s body to make enough antibodies to fight it off.

Joel didn't wipe out the entire Fireflies group - just this one base. The Fireflies have bases all over the country. In the first episode Marlene tells Ellie "I'm the leader of the Firefly base in Boston." So even if Joel killed all these Firefly soldiers and the doctor that was going to perform the surgery, there are still other Firefly groups around the country with other soldiers and doctors there.

I'm pretty sure a lot of them from around the country went to Utah and either died in the process of traveling or got killed by Joel. Spoilers for Part 2 of the game, but they're pretty much gone according to Abby and Owen

@@alexs1640 I haven't played TLOU2 yet but the game and show tell us that there are Firefly bases all over the country. Marlene and her group left Boston and went to Utah, and most of her group died in the journey. And then Joel killed most of them there, but that was just the Utah group (and Marlene and whoever survived the trip from Boston). There are Firefly groups all over the country that didn't come to Utah - it was just Marlene and her group from Boston.

Druckmann said that when they tested the original game, of the people that weren't parents about 50% agreed with Joel's choice. And of the people that were parents, about 90% of them agreed with Joel's choice. Joel doesn't care about saving the world. He only cares about Ellie.

Ellie didn't give clear consent though. Marlene and Joel were both wrong, because both of them failed to involve Ellie in a choice that was purely Ellie's. Saying you want to help is not the same as saying yes, go ahead and kill me right now. If Marlene had told her exactly what was going on, and Ellie had said yes, then yeah - Ellie's choice. (Some people do argue whether she's old enough to make that choice, and I can understand that argument, but I think it's a moot point, because she didn't get to choose.) Marlene didn't tell her, and that makes all the difference.
@jhornacek
@jhornacek 11 ай бұрын
@@d3l3tes00n Some would say that as a minor Ellie could not give consent, and that her guardian would have to give that consent. In the game Ellie has known Marlene all her life, so Marlene would likely be considered her guardian. Joel has been taking care of her for less-than a year - he doesn't have legal standing. Of course, those are rules and guidelines from a pre-Cordyceps world. Even as a 14-year-old Ellie has seen and done things that most adults in the pre-Cordyceps world have not.
@jhornacek
@jhornacek 11 ай бұрын
@@Silver_Owl Ellie literally has no choice here. Say the Fireflies had told her everything and said "It's up to you." What if Ellie had said no? Would the Fireflies agree with that and let her go? Of course not, they would have gone through with the surgery anyway. So in the Fireflies' eyes there was no point in telling Ellie the truth and giving her a choice since it didn't matter what she chose. In the game you can find recordings of Marlene where she says that the Fireflies came to her to authorize the surgery on Ellie, but it was really a formality. If Marlene had said no then the Fireflies would have gone through with it anyway (and probably fired Marlene as their leader).

I agree with Steejo that there could've been more Infected, at least to a point. Though if the show was heavily tilted towards Infected peril and away from its emotional story telling, then I think it would be worse off for it in my book. Though it is a good point that conflict with the Infected is a bit too sparse for the world they are portraying. I cannot think of any story elements they could have eliminated in favor of another Infected set piece. Rather, I wish they would have added a 10th episode that was dedicated to Joel and Ellie vs. Infected. Having done so would have gone a long way towards getting the balance right.

Maybe the games explained it better, but why didn’t they just take a small biopsy and use it to test the hypothesis? Cause the way that the show presents it, I’m totally on Joel’s side with everything he does in the episode. They don’t know this will actually work
@jhornacek
@jhornacek 11 ай бұрын
They don't need a sample of Ellie's brain - they need the Cordyceps growth inside her brain. So doing a biopsy on a piece of her brain would do nothing. It's like being given a snowball and told "there's a piece of string inside of it - remove the string." There's no way to do it without tearing the snowball apart.

@@jhornacek i guess, but like i said, there has to have been a way to test their hypothesis without just ripping her apart before they even had proof of concept. if what you're saying is correct, then i still say that they could have scanned her brain and found the right spot for the fungus and taken samples from it to use for experiments that could prove the concept. at that point, it becomes an ethical issue.

I get that you guys wanted more Infected presence, but honestly if there had been, they would have had to sacrifice a lot more story and character moments, so to me it was the right call. The Infected are also definitely NOT "not a problem, anymore" it's just that raiders/killers are an equal problem (which was a big point of the game and show -- that the worst humans are worse than any monsters). I agree with you that the final "Surgery ASAP!" scene is really stupid from a scientific standpoint. There is zero way any scientist on the planet would encounter an immune person and decide "we must instantly kill her!" versus studying, testing, taking biopsies, etc. I had the same issue in the game. But I get that the point of it really isn't the science -- it's what they force Joel to do. To answer to Suzi's question -- the door to the house was still locked because the Infected bashed into the house (we heard it) versus using the locked door. It sounded like it used a window. Meanwhile, I thought Ashley Johnson was fantastic in the opening scene -- you asked if she's done anything besides voice acting, and in addition to her voice acting for TLOU, she has over 147 IMDB credits, starred in the sitcom "Growing Pains," and appeared in "ER," "Wings," "Ally McBeal," "Roswell," and dozens more, and was also in The Avengers. She is currently starring in "Critical Role" and voiced Pike in their "The Legend of Vox Machina" TV series. She's fabulous. (And Laura Bailey, who won a BAFTA for voicing Abby in TLOU2 just like Ashley won for TLOU1, also stars in "Critical Role," and appeared as a nurse in the operating room scene here.)

You then find him in the ventilation as a skeleton with one arm, there's a note on the corpse saying that he didn't turn but instead hints that he died weeks later from either a wound infection or starvation (can't remember which it was) -Steejo

Better late than never. The reason why Marlene did not tell Ellie anything before surgery, is because in hope of a cure, they would have killed here no matter what she would have answered or agreed to, no matter how small a chance that it would have worked anyway, when you only have one shot at this, and not being able to make any tests, because Ellie would be the only test sample in any case. At the start of both episode 1 and 2, we are told by experts that finding a cure for this is impossible, and later we are told that they have failed many times before. With all that in mind, any sane parent would have done everything to save their child, exactly like Joel did. There would also be no reason to have any trust in the science of this broken a world, full of religious nuts and ruthless fanatics constantly fighting to control the QZ's. It's the lies at the end, and so leaving her no choice at all, that makes his decisions comparable to Marlene's. Btw, Marlene defeat her own argument of Joel not being able to keep Ellie alive and from being "ripped apart" by the infected in the future anyway, because if she really believed being immune is little to no guarantee, and do not really help Ellie from being killed, then what is the point of killing her in an attempt to make other people immune but equally in great risk of being killed by the already infected anyway.
@Silver_Owl

I agree with this. Marlene wasn't likely to take no for an answer - although we never actually found out, because she didn't give Ellie a choice. Marlene and Joel both let Ellie down by keeping information from Ellie that she had a right to know. I like your argument that Joel had no reason to trust the science here - that's a good point, as is your pointing out that Marlene defeats her own argument. Excellent comment.
