Yea this would never work unless you absolutely know your villain is capable of folding top pair or trips (neither is a given in a lot of games) bc getting 67 to fold just isn't happening in most games. Of course this wasn't low limit and the villain snap folded so kudos to the hero for knowing his man and making a world class bluff. Very impressive play.

@@Glitch47278 It's not result oriented, it's player oriented. There is an enormous difference that I don't think many players understand. The biggest problem with game theory and analysis is that the player type variable has been completely removed and ignored. It treats every situation like each player will always play the identical way. The better players can see the differences.

I disagree it's an interesting hand either way. Hero just got unlucky that he ran into a villain who had the perfect calling hand on the river (rather than say an over pair like QQs or KKs) and then, as a twist, got lucky that villain wasn't skilled enough to call. But HAD he called all the analysis still applies.

I think it's a risky 3 bet. The check back on the turn could be a boat hoping you catch a straight, flush, or smaller boat on the river. And it could be him hoping to catch any of those on a free card. So, the river 3 bet bluff is really relying upon what you feel is a timing tell, but not everyone who turned a boat or rivered a straight is going to go into deep thought over raise amount. They might have had a multiple of your bet, or a specific minimum dollar amount to throw in, already in mind with a nutted hand. Also, he probably has had some really bad experiences with having top 2 counterfeited on the turn, like all of us have. The 5 pairing probably instantly put visions of you having QQ into his head, despite your not 3 betting preflop. Not a monster under the bed, just the hand one pip better than his own. By the river, he was probably back to a normal blood pressure, and having you on something more like KJ, so had decided to raise most river cards for value, while still possibly getting QQ to fold.

Terrible fold by villian. Hero is repping an extremely narrow range of slow played sets or quads, and villian has the perfect hand to call with.
@joshuakennedy8094
@joshuakennedy8094 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah…. Especially since villain blocks JJ and 88. This raise specifically looks like either Quad 5’s, or 5/4, which would be a pretty loose call on the flop bet from hero. This would be tank called by anyone with half a brain and a little experience at mid stakes poker.

He could also choose to just 4-bet jam, given he heavily blocks virtually the only two hands that could call him enthusiastically, excluding 55).

Amazing. We have a great bluff candidate here, and rather than just snap folding the Hero took an incredibly creative line. That said, is block betting an exploit against people who won’t bluff raise enough? You would’ve bet so big as you said with a strong hand, so does block betting cap you to only thin value?

In this spot when you know Villain is capped, I think it's an obvious bluff raise. Even if the hand properties of J7 weren't there and Marc showed up with a different hand by the river I'd still go with river 3bet as mentioned Villain can never call with less than a boat. Otherwise on paired boards, I'd avoid bluffing as hand strength doesn't change much and opponents are more likely to call off. I prefer to bluff non board pairs. Very high risk generally.

I guess I am missing something but this seems like a results oriented self pat on the back by squish…PF call and river 3-bet decisions are likely -EV LT, and I’m not convinced that the villain’s raise on river is “never a bluff” which you have to believe for this to make any sense.
@genekboyer
@genekboyer 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, it could be a bluff for the same reason that it could be a value raise, because he views the small river size as weak
@johndawgsmoke1245
@johndawgsmoke1245 3 жыл бұрын
If the villain bluff raises the river, it makes this play (block bet, 3bet river) more profitable. If it’s never a bluff, this play is less profitable. Villain shouldn’t be raising the river with J8 or overpairs, he should have a polarized range with the raise on the river because hero has more 67 and 5x. He should realistically have 88, JJ, 55, 67s and some bluffs. The raise fold by villain with J8 is terrible. J8 is the best bluff catcher candidate because you block boats and you are really only scared of 67 because 5x without a boat isn’t raising on the end, it’s just calling.

When you said, having J8 here is better than AA, how is that true? Any pair QQ KK AA is a better hand than J8 in this scenario. J8 had been counterfeit by the paired 5 on the river. Also, are you allowed to use the words “nut blocker” when the nuts is 55 and you don’t block that?
@nobbynobbynoob

Holding J8 partially blocks monsters JJ and 88 even though it is not technically an absolute nut blocker.

It's crazy cuz hero shouldn't have too much 5X due to the Flop sizing by V and hero can't have overpairs here either, so V really only loses to 67 for the most part, you gotta at least think about it, making snap decisions on the river is rarely a good thing, just and extra 15-20 seconds of thinking about it could be the difference between winning and losing

@modestomouso1234
@modestomouso1234 3 жыл бұрын
Doesn’t seem like *you* are actually thinking through every street here. Put yourself in RFIs shoes. You flop top 2, bet flop large into multiple opps, only BB calls. Bottom card pairs. X/x. River is basically a blank, BB leads for 1/3 pot, you raise 3x bc what can BB really have here? And then you get 3bet otr. Keep in mind this is a rec player who doesn’t really realize hero is repping a boat + which we block. Your average live player is going to fold this hand a lot. online 100nl +, this outcome is probably very different.
