My most memorable experience with my Rolex Submariner (ref. 16613), that I purchased new in 1998 from a USA AD, was when my wife took it to a premier boutique in Switzerland (hint: the one now owned by Rolex) for servicing and she was told that my watch was a fake. The watch inspector at the counter really embarrassed my wife...made her feel like a criminal in front of a handful of other patrons. In any event, my wife stood her ground and requested that a more experienced staff member review the watch, along with the purchase papers and insurance documents. Of course, that senior expert validated the watch as authentic and had it sent to Geneva for servicing. Eight weeks later, the serviced watch was returned...along with an invoice for $1100. Seems to me that the so-called "professionals" have a hard time authenticating the real watches, too! Especially the older watches...you know...the ones bought under the assumption that Rolex quality delivered something special over one's lifetime. That treatment taught me one good lesson...never to buy another Rolex.

@@NinjaNovice I'm sure you heard of distance selling regulations. When you buy something online, you can send it back within a given timeframe. I took advantage of that while i lived in the UK. Got the pieces i wanted, had them for a few days or a week, and sent them back. Unworn of course, but having the watch for a week, you can fully assess and decide if it does it for you. I sold my first ever "proper" watch a 2225.80 seamaster chrono to buy a ceramic no date sub. Back then in 2015 the no date subs were going for 4500 GBP in the second hand market. Sold my seamaster chrono for 2k and got the sub for 4.5k. It was straight up obvious once i had the watch that it wasn't worth double the price. It wasn't higher quality, better built, more robust than the omega. Hulk was the same thing, didn't feel like it was worth it, didn't deliver much for the money for me. And i don't keep things i buy, unless 100 percent happy for them.

Regarding the minority who seek out these replicas - I would absolutely never buy these clones A) because of longevity concerns but B) more important than the object itself is what that object represents - everything it took for me to put it on my wrist. For example, you could go on ebay or to an antiques shop and buy a war medal. Wearing it would be meaningless. Passing it down to your children and grandchildren would be meaningless too. The only scenario in which i would somewhat respect someone buying a fake would be poor hustlers who are desperately trying to make it, and are betting that they can leverage returns on a high quality timepiece through including it on social media, signalling wealth whilst networking etc. I myself am a poor hustler however and i will never stoop to do this. I think you’re right about the etched crown at 6 o’clock. The fakers DO seem to be making it just a little more pronounced. I handled a fake where the etched crown was pretty visible with the naked eye, and without effort. And the first thing the guy selling it said was “you can see the crown etched at 6”. It was a decent clone. Rehaut lettering didn’t perfectly line up to minute markers so that was a good indicator of it being fake. But if people can easily see the etched crown, an amateur could easily see and accept it as being authentic.

The biggest tell for most reps is the feel when winding the watch, and the sound of winding. For this reason, a lot of people who buy reps send them for service immediately after purchase. After a clean and an oiling, they feel & sound like the real thing, or so close to it that 99.9% of people would never know the difference. The newest 3135 clone movements are parts-compatible with gen movements. It's a little scary how good the rep makers have gotten.

Thank you for not demonizing replicas, and simply sticking to the facts. Now I do not condone the manufacture or sale of unlicensed replica's, and of course fraud is fraud. But I feel like those two things are conflated way to often: creating and selling a replica with full disclosure is not fraud: it is simply trademark violation, and I am aware of no replica factories that try to pass off their replicas as real. As for the people who wear them, I still hold that the practice is effectively identical to wearing a close homage (or clomage). I guarantee you the likes of Rolex or Omega have never lost a single dollar to the illegal replica market as, no one who bought a replica did so in lieu of buying a real one, and no one who is going to buy a real one, would ever buy a replica instead. I used to be in the same boat until I asked myself “does the price of the watch make me feel any better?”. I quickly realized the answer was no. I like the way watches make me feel because I like how they look and how they act as an extension of my personal expression and style. I get as much joy wearing a timex expedition, as I do a genuine omega aquaterra, as I do wearing a replica green patek phillipe nautilus 5711. Why do you feel better about a real Rolex? If you like the Rolex design, isn’t that the part that makes you feel positive about the watch? It’s a bit confusing. If you like the design of the real Longines more than you like the design of the fake Rolex, why buy a real Rolex.?And if you like the design of the fake Rolex better, why buy a Longines? Here’s a hypothetical: what if a fake Longines has a better movement and better finishing than a real Longines, would you prefer the real watch even though it’s inferior? I don’t buy fake watches because I don’t want to support criminals, but a fake Rolex would not make me feel different. I've owned several genuine Rolex subs (purchased new from AD) and they have had some play in the bezel. For some reason a lot of people are in some kind of illussion that Rolexes don't have play in their bezels. They do, but less than cheaper brands (and some replicas even though I've never bought one).

All these differences except the bezel action and crown movement resistance can be easily written off as production tolerances, and there are super clones out there that got these right. The shade of green on the bezel also varies through out different production years, I’ve seen hulks with different shades of green bezels both be successfully authenticated in RSC.

I own a AAA Hulk (£140) and a Clone (£300) Yachtmaster rose gold. They're amazing. No play/slop on the dial, keep time 10sec+/- per day and have a power reserve of almost 50hrs. The clasps on both are a little too sharp on the corners but apart from that they're lovely watches

I find it really sad that some people don't see the point of buying a genuine Rolex. You're just pretending to have the thing you really want or are mimicking it, how can that be satisfying? Unless your sole reason for buying a Rolex is to impress others, which is well, sad. The purpose of getting a Rolex is to feel special, to reward yourself for hard work or a life goal, to pass on something of value to your kids and also to appreciate fine craftsmanship and quality. It is also to tell time which a genuine Rolex does accurately to within +/-2 seconds a day. A replica will often be 20 seconds or more out per day, so it cannot even do what it's meant to do accurately. On top of that, if no one bought the genuine ones any more then Rolex would go bust and there would be nothing for anyone to replicate and for people to pretend to have 😅 finally, when the replica breaks, which it will, it will be very hard or even impossible to get serviced or repaired. So you've competely wasted $500-$1000.
