98-year-old Ivor Ward says it's 'a pleasure' for him to still be working four days a week.
The former Royal Engineer works at East Midlands Pharma in Rothley, Leciestershire. He's been there 20 years.
He lives alone and says his collegaues are like a family. And reckons if he wasn't working he'd be sitting on his own ageing quickly.
Would you work until you're 98?

So tragic that some people go to work because it’s their only form of company.

yeah i find the whole idea that you got to work to stay mentaly well etc really short sighted and a bit stupid tbh. as long as you've got money in the form of passive income or pension etc then you can do what you want instead of working a job. just takes a bit of imagination. working a job isn't the only way to keep active

I think a lot of elderly people who are healthy would like to work for longer. But, unfortunately, many are not well enough to do this.

Personal choice. Depends however entirely upon health and type of work.

I worked to age 76 as a hands on engineer in developing countries. From 1998 to 2017 I was in Cambodia running a light engineering worshop as a active on my feet engineer.

A friend is still working as a doctor in his late 70s. He loves it, doesn’t need the money but he has a good work life balance doing 2 days a week. I would prefer if we could take some retirement while kids are young and in exchange work until I die, as it’s a shame to be working so much to pay a mortgage while the kids are young and need me more, whilst in my 70s can work and have less responsibilities. However physical jobs would be difficult and I can’t see working in a trade for 60 or 70 years working.

I don't even want to live to 98! I very much doubt I will get to 80, but if I do then that's enough for me. Lingering on and doing things to fill time isn't my idea of fun! Just sounds lonely and if you're in bad health it's a complete no no. Most by the time they're 50+ are starting with health issues and the older you get the more you get. If you have your facilities mentally and physically then you could go out there and do charity work, join clubs, whatever! Packing 💩 in a factory at 98 he must be mad as a hatter

It all depends if you are doing something you love or to just live. There are such things as hobbies allotment walking swimming bridge football (watching) It's wonderful to get out and about I understand it depends on the quality of your pension or lack of.

The attitude to what 'retirement' means and older people still working is very different in the USA. And while many will say they have no choice but to keep working after retirement, there are many also who work to keep active, physically and mentally, take jobs that we would often label as 'menial' just to keep that routine of a day. My father would love to keep working if he could. I plan to keep working. And it's nothing to do with loneliness either.

I definitely hope to keep working until 98! I'm a church bmusician, so I may wear down - and lol, I do compare recordings of myself to previous years, for I might not notice gradual decline. 🙃 We are made to work 🙂

If pensioners are working, there’s no chance of young people getting jobs they should bring back the pension age so you have to retire
@Broomfondle1

Once you reach the retirement age it should be up to the individual if he or she wishes to continue working or not. Some people can't wait to retire, others enjoy their jobs so much the thought of retiring scares them.

There should be a health MOT at a certain age to make sure you can still do all aspects of the job compared to younger people who are maybe can do a bit more.
@Broomfondle1

@@stuartwilson1190 if an employer is happy to keep you in work then a health MOT is not necessary. A health MOT for driving a car is something I totally agree with.

@@Broomfondle1 no you should get a fit to work check when you get to a certain age. Companies can’t just force you out the door as that’s against the law.

@@stuartwilson1190 when you reach retirement age it's not against the law to retire you off, that's why it's called retirement.

@@Broomfondle1 you can’t force people to take retirement. So for example we have this 74 year old person who can’t do half the work as everyone else does but she gets paid the same amount of money. But that person has no intention to retire & they can’t legally force them out but yet she’s not fit enough to do the job.
