Hey Phil, I was a long-time subscriber but recently unsubscribed due to the coverage and lack of apology for the Covington Catholic high school kids mishap. You retracted your fake news story, and then moved on. You need to apologize to the kids, and apologize for the blatant bias / racism against white males in MAGA hats. Your actions were biased and fueled the cycle of fake news and twitter mob outrage culture. Your apology was none existent for these behaviors as all you did was issue a correction. I'd appreciate some type of response to this line of thought. Thanks for reading.

I work in an oil field at the top of Alaska. The temperatures folks are experiencing in the lower 48 today are similar to when I began working up here, above the Arctic Circle, 15 years ago. In the winter, we would dip down as low as -40 & -50 degrees - with the wind-chill dropping temps down to nearly -95. I just don’t see those extremes anymore. Alaska’s glaciers have receded incredibly, we hardly get snow anymore (I remember digging tunnels out the front door and to the out-buildings on our property when I was a child), and now we have ticks in many areas of the state... We’ve never had ticks before, I wasn’t trained for this! To think the climate isn’t changing is a fool’s errand. I’ve never wanted to believe in a secret, Illuminati-type organization as much as I want to think someone has got the reins on this and know truly how close we can get to the edge before it is too late... ... If we're talking about Japanese, spacing doesn't actually matter. Japanese doesn't really have a space. You can use spaces if you want to improve understanding, but it's not an actual part of the language. In fact, the lack of a space is the main justification given for using kanji instead of kana. Speaking of which, most of the problem with the tattoo was grammar and not kanji. The first symbol is a universal counter that lets you know we are giving an amount. The second symbol is the particle* that basically means "of". The third symbol is kanji, and I don't know it, because kanji is a bitch. *Originally I said participle, which is wrong, and I have corrected it.
@lohto35 жыл бұрын
Phoenix Fire - The third Kanji is "ring". But not the ring accessory you put on your fingers. "Ring" as in just a circle. In English, "ring" refers to both circles and the accessory, but in Japanese, there's different words for them. You need to put the kanji of "finger" before the Kanji of "ring" to get the accessory. By itself, it's just a circle. You're right. It is a grammar problem. As people are reporting it, that spacing the words separately would mean "seven rings", is actually wrong. It wouldn't. It would just have two separate words, "seven" and "circle". Not "seven circles", just a random seven and a singular circle. Spacing wouldn't fix it. You got it right that it's a grammar problem, not a spacing problem. Spacing is never a problem in Japanese. The reason it's a grill now is because "seven circle" is pretty much what that grill is called. Ariana needed it to be "seven finger rings". She just put "seven circle", which is what they call that grill. Of course, not all of what I'm describing is literally the exact meanings, but this way gets the nuance across the best.

Not the worst but still sticks with me. In 1995, my client had committed suicided. In the grieving process, his 3 surviving sisters wanted to get tattooed by me to help connect with there brother who had passed. It was a weird day, not because of the requests or the fact that I was doing memorial tattoos, but because you could feel the tension between the family. My clients death had prematurely brought these siblings together and somehow, spending the afternoon together in a tattoo shop, they had started to forgive each other and their underlying resentments had started to wash away. It was really great to watch these adult children bond again. So lastly, I tattooed a new boyfriend of one of the sisters. He wasn't getting a memorial tattoo. He was getting a bull head. This was the first time he had met the extended family. While I tattooed the boyfriend, the girls returned from shopping at a head shop next door. They were showing off some shirts they bought while the boyfriend was in the chair. He saw a Nirvana shirt that the girls just purchased and said- “Hey! He blew his head off too!!” And I sat for 39 more minutes in complete discomfort.

The wind chill, at its coldest, was about -37. I had to work today. They would not let us close the store, and we had a few people call out due to not even being able to start their cars. We had to keep switching out who was working the drive thru every 20-30 minutes due to how cold it was and how hard the winds were blowing. If the weather could potentially cause harm to me due to extreme heat or extreme cold, we shouldn't be open. Bottom line. (EDIT: I don't care that some of you live in conditions like this. Consider that I am not used to these kinds of conditions, and frost bite is no joking matter. We were told we could get frost bite in as little as 10 minutes. If I'd grown up in a place where these temperatures were normal, I probably wouldn't be here saying any of this. But since I live in INDIANA, a state where we don't see below zero temperatures very often, consider this before saying anything akin to "Well where I live that's a normal Tuesday for us") I bring that up to talk about the whole Howard Schultz thing. Yeah he's not our CEO anymore, but when he was CEO he allowed stores to stay open through horrible weather conditions, cold included. He encouraged an environment where customers could abuse the baristas and ultimately walk away with something. Whatever his original vision for the company was, as soon as he started making big bank on it, he let profits get in the way of caring about his people. The man couldn't run his company right. He won't be able to run the country right. And before I hear "he's a billionaire" a million times, yes I know. But profits do not tell of good business practices. When you make your workers bend over backwards for customers that so often abuse and belittle, all in the name of profit, you are not a good businessman. Oh, and also, for fuck's sake do not boycott Starbucks just because this fucker decided to play politics. He is not our head honcho anymore. He's not affiliated with the company and how it's run anymore. And if you do decide to stop by a Starbucks, please please PLEASE do not harass the baristas and shifts working. It's time to stop listening to defeatist attitudes like, "Person X can't possibly win." Those same individuals said the same lines about Trump and now expect us to believe them 3 years later. I think Schultz actually COULD have a significant chance of pulling together enough support. I'm a 2016 Trump voter, but would be MUCH more supportive of a more balanced and intellectually inclined candidate. The two-party government hasn't been willing to make progress, so perhaps we should dump both parties in favor of a third party. There are certainly many moderate Republicans like myself, Libertarians, and true centrists that would support a reasoned center candidate in addition to the anti-Trumpers out there. A third party success could mend the divide between the apparent left/right social war by letting the more moderate individuals of each side realize that they can support the same candidate together! Now whether Schultz is that candidate or not is left up to question. I know absolutely nothing about his political views or plans, and would be receptive to learning more.
@bucca25 жыл бұрын
Natesticle People said that about Trump because nobody believed that the republicans would ever be dumb enough to elect someone as uneducated and under qualified as he is. We were wrong. They elected him not because they liked him, but because he’s the best way to sway voters and get their policy through. He is still a candidate from a major party in our two-party system. Running as an independent, however, is very different. By its very nature, the Electoral College will never allow an independent to win, because independents will never win enough majorities to become a serious contender, no matter how many people support them. All Schultz will do is split the anti Trump vote and re-elect him. I understand you may not have a problem with that, but my purpose here was to refute your point and reiterate that an INDEPENDENT WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO WIN.

I think those in the "X can't possibly win, they'll just split the vote" people should just throw their weight behind whoever would beat Trump. If a third party candidate gets enough support to drastically swing the election then why not support that candidate so that Trump won't win. If defeating Trump is the most important thing, then actually prioritize that. There were plenty of Republicans who voted for Trump even though they didn't really want to bc it was that or Hilary. Time after time the right manages to set their differences aside long enough to consolidate votes from the evangelist to the alt-right, to the traditional low taxes conservatives, whatever the contrasts of nuance in their policy. Because they all lean right they all vote for whatever Republican runs, and in today's political climate they would rally behind a 3rd party right-wing candidate. Personally, I think its all nutjob stuff, but if you're playing the "anything but Trump" game then actually fucking play it. Stop using the same scare tactics that got you in this situation and actually prioritize any left-leaning candidate who's not Trump.

The sad reality is that right now this can’t happen. The country is as partisan as it has ever been before so an independent has no chance of winning, in the case of Shultz he is pretty left leaning so he will take a big chunk of anti-Trump votes. Idealistically a centrist could unite the country, realistically all they would do is give Trump another four years in office. I do think Shultz would pull from both sides, and if he wan'ts to run let him, but I actually have to agree with Bloomberg on 1 point he made, it is not possible for an independent to win, even if they won the popular vote, the electoral collage is rigged in a way that only a Democrat or Republican can win because our individual votes don't count, we merely elect individuals to go and place the actual votes in our stead. I firmly believe the electoral collage is a good thing that we need to keep and reform. It's purpose was to prevent large population centers like New York and LA from walking all over the interests of the little guy and I support that, but the I do think we need to revamp the second voting process by people and revamp it to where an independent could actually win, this is from era long past and was used because we didn't have the technology at the time to quickly pull votes from all across the country, this portion of the electoral college is no longer needed and usually supports the will of the american people, even the last election the electors still casted their votes based on how their district did, it doesn't allow for an independent to actually win.On that note I am also against the winner take all rule that 48 states have, there are state on both sides that are probably Purple states but come out as red or blue depending on the population centers.If those rules were in place as vote happened Clinton would have won if everyone voted the same way, but if rules had been different both candidates would have been playing the game differently as well, I still think Trump would have won, and to be honest I don't like either of them nor did I vote for either, but I do think that is a better breakdown to show the will of the American people.
@notcamer0n5 жыл бұрын
Torelethain The electoral college is structured so that the majority that the people vote for is what the electors pick. The only exceptions to this rule is states like Maine that deviate from a winner-take-all system. They split votes according to congressional districts and the senate votes are based on state majority. You could argue that the elector might just violate conventions and pick whoever but that rarely (if ever) has happened and I doubt someone will just ignore their pledge and potentially violate their state’s law Edit: I only said this simply to point out an independent can win with enough popular support. It is *very* unlikely unless you’ve got someone with a ridiculous charisma and ability to unify people from both sides of the aisle or at least completely crush one traditional party by stealing virtually all of their votes

posted this on twitter but i guess i'll say it here too with the context of it being the japanese usage of kanji, 輪 (rin) means the shape of ring like objects, not the actual jewelry. 指輪 (yubiwa) is for jewelry, which is the part she said she left out bc it "hurt too much". you cant just leave out key parts of a word and expect it to keep the same meaning. it also changes the way it's read. 輪 is just "rin" while 指輪 is "yubiwa". her intention was for it to be "七つの指輪" read as "shichi tsuno yubiwa" which is fine (七-seven つ-counter for objects 指輪-jewelry ring) but instead left out "つの指" which changed the meaning from jewelry to just a ring shaped thing and the reading from wa in yubiwa to just rin. putting 七輪 together just makes a whole new word, in this case 七輪 essentially means a type of bbq

I mean, even if she added の, the meaning could have been interpreted better. I would have understood what she meant, and took it as a colloquialism or an artistic liberty (like the movie 君の名は, which used 名 instead of 名前) Although, it kinda seems like she just used Google translate, and didn't actually consult any Japanese/Japanese Americans on her project at all, so I'm almost glad she butchered it so hilariously
@mxe_mxe1785 жыл бұрын
@@wilsonciao8286 it can be either one, they both mean seven. but when it's in 七輪, it's only read as shichi. in 七つの指輪, it can be either nana or shichi since it references specifically the number seven. i see shichi used a lot more than nana though. i think it depends on personal preference when you're using it for literal numerical purposes like time/counting/age etc. shichi flows better in my opinion

I wish there were no such thing as political parties. Just like what Schultz mentioned about "revenge politics", that's all it causes. Having two sides doing whatever they can to counter the other party, rather than any of the politicians actually assessing a situation to determine the correct solution. Having polarizing opinions from each side of any given issue oversimplifies something that will never ever be simple. We elected these individuals to handle this non-simple problem and now they've simplified it so they're just yelling "I'm right, you're wrong" while getting paid six figures to do, LITERALLY, just as good of a job as any joe-schmoe on the street could do. I vote we wipe all of Congress and the Executive branch and have a re-election where everyone has to run as independent. ✋ (No one can be re-elected in this election because they all suck)
@82Jaster5 жыл бұрын
Schultz himself is doing revenge politics. He's mad that Democrats, the party he's long voted for, are now getting behind the idea to tax the rich. So out of revenge he's now going to try to run against him solely due to that one thing. He still refuses to present any actual policy proposals.
