The bit where the homunculus first suggested the name Theophrastus Bombastus and then changes it to Von Hohenheim is a reference to real-world alchemist Paracelsus, whose birth name was Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim.

The chain of events was like this: Royal alchemist creates Father, and tasks one of his slaves with taking care of it. Father names the slave Hohenheim, and starts teaching him alchemy (he is a magical source of alchemical knowledge - that's what he was created for.) As years pass, Hohenheim gains more and more knowledge, becoming a competent servant, until he is promoted to a trusted member of the team, allowing him to take part in the ritual (and Father to hijack it for himself)

The cool think about why Pride calls himself the first homunculus is because he is literally the pride of Father taken out and put into a new being, so the feeling of pride about being the first homunculus, and having the same form (black, shapeless and with eyes) is held by Pride. That is why Pride calls himself the first, because he holds the literal feeling of pride as the origin of the first homunculus. I just think that detail is so neat.

You were talking about Hohenheim's knowledge in your react. So in the second episode, Ed and Al see the Truth. The Truth showed them X amount of knowledge based on the toll they paid. Their toll was a leg, and a body. Imagine how much of the truth you would see if you sacrificed 500K people. That is a butt ton of knowledge & power Hohenheim received from Father's deception. Also, you were asking about how much did Hohenheim learn from Xianiese Alchehestry. Mae and Ed, when they first discuss Alchehestry, tell of the origins of Alchemy / Alchehestry. The Legend is that a golden being taught the first adopters. One from the east, one from the west. Minor spoiler - but not spoiling any plot - Hohenheim leaves Xerses and goes to Xing and Father goes to Amestris. They are the sources of Alchemy and Alchehestry.
@acmh7538
@acmh7538 Жыл бұрын
To add a little bit to this: it's Fu who first talks about the legend of the Sage from the West (in episode 18), and he said that the Sage (Hohenheim) combined his knowledge with the traditions of Xing to create Alkahestry. That's why Alchemy and Alkahestry aren't exactly the same (even though Father's and Hohenheim's knowledge should be the same)
@mbpoblet
@mbpoblet Жыл бұрын
@@acmh7538 They also had different philosophies and personalities; Father wanted Amestrian alchemy to be military-oriented (so it'd be easy to conquer the required territory), and under his control; Hohenheim wanted, I suppose, to make it as hard as possible for what happened at Xerxes to happen again.

You two probably started feeling differently about Hohenheim since a few episodes back, but this is the episode that I usually see a lot of people change their minds about him completely. This episode, and the beginning of episode 36 give so much context to the kind of character that Hohenheim is. He's a victim, and he will spend his entire life trying to ensure that the thing that happened to him will never be done to anybody else. Edit: also think back to the episode that Ed, Ling, and Envy were trapped in Gluttony's stomach. Ed has a line in there that basically gives away the plot. The two headed dragon, underneath an inverted depiction of god.

What I found very interesting about this backstory is that at the end of the day, humanity is at fault for the events that are transpiring throughout the series. Father, or the Dwarf In The Flask, didn't will itself into existence, nor was he a creation of Van Hoenheim. The royal court of Xerxes were the ones who brought Father into the world, obviously under the orders of the King, as well as the machinations of his head Alchemist. This was done by said Alchemist having found some way to tap into The Gate Of Truth, stole some components from within it, and brought it into reality (or the real world). Using his slave's blood, i.e. Hoenheim, he managed to contain those components within a body (but had to house it within a flask in order to maintain it's existence). And thus, Father was born. The reason why this was done was because the King and his court desired a sentient source of vast amounts of knowledge to be at their disposal and utelage. Much like Hoenheim, the Homunculus/ Father was meant to be a slave to humanity. But obviously, the people of Xerxes didn't completely understand what they created, nor what they were dealing with. The Dwarf did become what they wanted, a being that carried with it lots of universal knowledge. But none of them ever expected such a being to use said knowledge for it's own benefit. Which of course was it's desire to free itself from being bound within a flask, and by extension, bound to a life of servitude. And all of this was done because humans wanted more than what they were capable of (that of course being absolute knowledge for the elites of Xerxes, and immortality for the King). Which thematically correlates back to why the Dwarf's current appearance is that of a human's, and why his children are named after the seven sins of 'man'. The King of Xerxes and his court simply reaped what they sowed by creating Father, and it unfortunately resulted in many innocent people losing their lives alongside them. And that was how Xerxes fell. It's pretty harrowing to see how history seems to repeat itself with the human elitists of the Amestrian government choosing to join Father in his exploits, which mind you, must have started since the founding of the country.

@@houseofaction IIRC, Father is a small piece of what exists on the other side of the Gate of Truth. Which explains why he has such an incomprehensible level of knowledge of alchemy from the start. Ed described the experience being like his mind was blowing up with more information than he could process, but Father already has so much of it because he came from beyond the Gate.

Hohenheim wasn't imbued with knowledge, he just had a long time with Homunculus teaching him things, and he's been alive for hundreds of years since then, too. He also didn't learn alkahestry, he INVENTED it. In the episode where Al visits the ruins of Xerxes, Fu mentions a "golden-haired philosopher from the west" who gifted them with alkahestry, while Al talks about a similar man from the east giving Amestris alchemy. That's Hohenheim and Father, respectively - both from Xerxes, which is in the middle of the desert between the two countries.

it's such a pet peeve of mine when subtitles give away a character's name before you're supposed to know it. in this case, it wasn't that big a deal, but come on, did they *really* need to reveal Hohenheim's name before you're supposed to know it's him and before he's even given it AS his name? Sorry for the little rant, but there's just so many better ways to handle that while properly preserving the experience for people to rely on subtitles.
@RafaelBenedicto
@RafaelBenedicto Жыл бұрын
7:00 - See, the problem with these subtitles is that they reveal the names of characters before they're intended to be revealed. You're not supposed to definitively know that the young man there is Hohenheim before the Dwarf in the Flask gives him his name. ( I know you guessed who he was beforehand, but still) You really don't need to fret too much about putting the subtitles if you can't find good ones. I'm from the Philippines, English isn't my native language yet I do fine without subtitles. And I imagine the vast majority of people who watch this show with you, can do without subtitles perfectly fine, because the voice acting in this show is amazing.

The messed up thing is that what Father did to Hohenheim is from his perspective , gratitude. Hohenheim was his "father" in a sense, his friend, and he may have thought that was payback to Xerxes for both of them having been the Royal Alchemist's slaves.
@houseofaction

hohenheim is not viewed as his father but as his TWIN BROTHER. the alchemist created Father with hohenheims blood. essentially creating him from hohenheims soul. than when the dwarf did the transmutational circle he used that blood to create a container for his essence becoming Ho's literal idential twin brother. this also makes all of the homunculi Ed and Al's cousins/half siblings

The real protagonist of this story is actually Hohenheim, but for a long time it was his two sons who carried out the story for him in front of the audience. And Hohenheim worked hard to prepare everything behind the scenes. When the truth emerged, people realized that it all depended on Hohenheim's hard work. This is a rather peculiar way of handling stories. Hohenheim is always behind all this, pulling all actions, just like "Father" is always behind all darkness. This is a very complete and closed "circle", which also explains why the original story (comic and FMAB) distributes the proportion of the plot in this way. In fact, Ed and Al's own adventure story, which belongs entirely to them, begins when everything in this series ends. But that's another story. PS: I don't mean that they haven't had enough adventures before, but that "technically" this story is "overall" a "Hohenheim story".

No father/dwarf in the flask really did just outright teach Hohenheim to read and write and then taught him some alchemy (manga explains better). From there that allowed Hohenheim to catch the attention of the master and become his apprentice and further his alchemy through that. After the massive sacrifice, the two went in separate directions. Father went West and taught the Alchemy using the tectonic plates and founded Amestris (the wests version of the golden haired sage). Hohenheim went East and wandered into Xing where he developed and taught the more peaceful and healing focused Alchestry (becoming the East’s version of the golden haired sage). This is why he was able to heal Izumi, he was using Alchestry. As to what Hohenheim is doing and if he knows about Father’s plans, I suggest rewatching the flashbacks in “Family Portrait” 😉

If you go back to the episode where May taught Marco about Alkahestry, those two pretty much explained Alchemy vs Alkahestry for you. From what we have been seeing, Alkahestry could do everything Alchemy can do and vice versa. It was all equivalent exchange as the law and deconstruction and reconstruction as the core of how they operate. What differed the two apart was Marco said "the energy from the movement of the tectonic plates" while May explained that Alkahestry using the chi flow that exists within living things and the so-called dragon pulse within the earth as energy source. Thus, their sources of energy were different.
@Abcdefg-tf7cu
@Abcdefg-tf7cu 6 ай бұрын
A lot of people don't seem to understand that alchemy and alkahestry are the same thing. They both have to obey the law of conservation of energy, and simply get energy from different places. They still are both about transmuting matter, and both require equivalent exchange (conservation of mass and energy).

@PedroHGFranco imma have to go and check the manga because if they met before why didn't he help her then? And why is she acting like they never met before when they have? I always thought it was a past event and she's been slowly getting better since. She never was intrigued about the philosopher's stone so she doesn't ask him about him being one and then either forgot he was Ed and Al's father, trying to coax it out of them, or just plain plot hole.

@@rich9320 you are simply wrong, so get over it. this was after they already met, she didn't know he was their father when she first met him this ep/chapter they mention his children.

@@rich9320 I agree with PedroHGFranco here. In this episode she doesn't act like they never met before, she calls him by his name in the train. But she says something along the lines of "so you're actually Ed's and Al's father" because that's something she didn't know in their previous encounter. So imo the order of events is: 1. She met Hohenheim in Central (maybe concurrently to episode 9 - we see her and Izumi at the train station in Central when Winry arrives ther). He didn't help her then because he didn't know she was sick, they speak about the Philosopher's Stone (no idea why because as you said she wasn't interested in it) 2. Episode 12: Ed and Al went to see her, she said she met a man named Hohenheim who knew a lot about the Philosoper's Stone, that's when she learnt that he's their father 3. Episode 40: she recognized Hohenheim in the train, now that she knows he's Ed's and Al's father they speak about them, she get sick, he recognizes the symptoms, asks her about the truth and heals her, she asks him what he is in return.

I absolutely adore all the spycraft/double speak scenes in this show, how they weave coded language into a regular conversation and especially the whole information through names scene with Mustang and Hawkeye. Excellent. Also even if he did have good intentions, Hohenheim healing Izumi without her consent is still pretty uncool. Also also, they don't get into it any further really anywhere, in the manga when he is threatened for mocking the King he adds that he was created accidentally. I think it's implied the master alchemist didn't even know the homunculus was alive until he found out that Hohenheim was inexplicably well educated and even teaching other slaves basic math and reading.
