If the cast consists of only white people it's absolutely taboo and bad but if it consists of only black people it's great and awesome? What is this? Do movie producers in africa have the same standards for their film industry? Or does bollywood also have quotas for non indian people? Does japan, corea, indonesia, china or any other part of the world have quotas? Movies were always divers, i can name tons of great and famous black actors from the past 30 years in important roles. The directors(usually white men) who do write/make movies that have ‘representation’ of minorities usually it comes off as stereotypical so i think that it will just make that problem worse, same for books. You can just tell when something is created by someone who doesn’t have any idea how to represent people imo
@UnspecifiedHealer4 жыл бұрын
I'd say it feels gross for a number of reasons: 1) It's flat out discrimination. The art is being judged by the artist(s) and not the art itself. 4 white dudes in a garage want to make a movie? Great, but no matter how good it turns out to be it's never going to win Best Picture because the wrong people made it. 2) It's encouraging tokenism and "diversity hires." Companies are incentivized to hire people because of their race/ethnicity/gender/sexual orientation and not because they are good at the job or even necessarily qualified. In most cases they will be but it creates a doubt in people's minds "Was that person (or "I") hired just to be eligible for Best Picture?" 3) It heavily implies that these minority groups maybe can't make it on their own so we need to create artificial value connected with their skin colour, gender, or other such immutable characteristics because otherwise why would anyone hire them over a white guy? (Let's just ignore all the people who actually made it.) 4) Again, it's flat out discrimination. It is giving special treatment to people based on immutable characteristics. It is assigning value, merit, and judgement to people based on things they don't control.
@abraxis72924 жыл бұрын
I feel all the signal virtuing and "changes" big companies and shit are doing is doing more harm than good. It just raises the ire of people who already are assholes and causes more outrage. Also doesn't so any good in the long term or benefit those in the "under represented groups".

@kora41854 жыл бұрын
That would make more sense. Although I still think in the end no one should depend on the big guys to start doing their stories and movies anymore. We have much more than they all could dream about having when they started cinema. We’re in a time where anyone can produce their own art from home pretty much, wich wasn’t possible before, and this will only get better gradually, like it did with music and such. Forcing progress can sometimes times have reverse outcomes. I mean, filmmaking is after all culturally elitists, like skiing and equestrianism, because these are very expensive hobbies so of course the majority will be rich people that don’t need to work outside of it so they have time, other rich contacts and rich outlooks (wich is natural). So whenever people ask them to show another perspective, it can just end up being inauthentic to an almost problematic way that makes others dislike it and not want to see or fund none of that anymore. In the time of technology and social media, people should get more united to bring attention and help out everyone grow in their own way, not depend of Hollywood! Like supporting the small businesses within your community and countries instead of demanding your community to be hired by already big corporations that will only become more powerful and hard to compete with.
