Do physical limits count as discrimination? I discriminate against women to the extent that it's statistically reasonable to *MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE* for me to think so. Most of us would agree *overall* women are not as strong as men physically. Putting sexism aside that's gotta be a safe thing to say right? I know that there are going to be many people that disagree, perhaps yourself as well. I work in the construction industry and I very very rarely see women on the site unless they're a supervisor or safety/cleaning personnel. The majority of the time and in much less specific circumstances you are absolutely correct in your comment.

If he is the producer and director he can say he made the film, even if he has a big crew behind him (that he pays) that also made it possible. He also has the right to chose whoever he sees perfect for the role. No quota should limit him from creating his own free and creative work. And how racist are these criterias? If the cast consists of only white people it's absolutely taboo and bad but if it consists of only black people it's great and awesome? What is this? Do movie producers in africa have the same standards for their film industry? Or does bollywood also have quotas for non indian people? Does japan, corea, indonesia, china or any other part of the world have quotas? Movies were always divers, i can name tons of great and famous black actors from the past 30 years in important roles. And since when are women a minority in film business? Wtf? There are thousands of famous and fantastic female actors in different roles since the beginning of the film industry.

*We* don't care. It's the people who are angry about just about everything that is primarily white, or has white people in it. It's narcissists that have absolutely no idea what they want, and just want to complain about something that they don't enjoy to begin with. Critique on video games from someone who doesn't like video games is not worthy critique just like people who don't care about film making shouldn't produce opinion pollution. It's just for an agenda. If there truly was a market for this, then they would be opening forums on their own, and trying to host award shows in their own way.

The directors(usually white men) who do write/make movies that have ‘representation’ of minorities usually it comes off as stereotypical so i think that it will just make that problem worse, same for books. You can just tell when something is created by someone who doesn’t have any idea how to represent people imo
@UnspecifiedHealer
@UnspecifiedHealer 4 жыл бұрын
I'd say it feels gross for a number of reasons: 1) It's flat out discrimination. The art is being judged by the artist(s) and not the art itself. 4 white dudes in a garage want to make a movie? Great, but no matter how good it turns out to be it's never going to win Best Picture because the wrong people made it. 2) It's encouraging tokenism and "diversity hires." Companies are incentivized to hire people because of their race/ethnicity/gender/sexual orientation and not because they are good at the job or even necessarily qualified. In most cases they will be but it creates a doubt in people's minds "Was that person (or "I") hired just to be eligible for Best Picture?" 3) It heavily implies that these minority groups maybe can't make it on their own so we need to create artificial value connected with their skin colour, gender, or other such immutable characteristics because otherwise why would anyone hire them over a white guy? (Let's just ignore all the people who actually made it.) 4) Again, it's flat out discrimination. It is giving special treatment to people based on immutable characteristics. It is assigning value, merit, and judgement to people based on things they don't control.

Also how weird would it be to get a phone call for a job where dude just like hey I might be your boss what's your ethnicity? Perfect we need more (insert your minority). Or a weirder thought. A PoC work union to ensure companies can pick n choose. Call me a skeptic but I totally see this ending in CEO's, producers, job creators basically just calling a union and being like I'll take 5 African Americans 4 South Asians and a supersized lesbian for good measure. Also if this shit happened in reverse PoC would lose there shit. Imagine the NBA creating a law like this to include more white folk 😑

Based on the criteria that a movie requires to ''reach a certain diversity quota'' to be eligible for "Best Picture" means that something like 1917, which was nominated for that category this year, wouldnt be from now. In that case, as is done with most historical artifacts nowadays, should we demand that Oscars take away the "Best Picture" award from Schindlers List, because there were no black or openly gay people in it? You know, If there is anything bad I can tell about Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, Ricky Gervais, etc. is that they dont call this bullshit out publicly Enough, because Maybe after hearing what those guys have to say some of those earnings driven morons stops to think about the possibility that theyre pandering to people who shouldnt be trusted with raising kids - let alone voting or coming up with "progressive" policies, etc.

@kora4185
@kora4185 4 жыл бұрын
That would make more sense. Although I still think in the end no one should depend on the big guys to start doing their stories and movies anymore. We have much more than they all could dream about having when they started cinema. We’re in a time where anyone can produce their own art from home pretty much, wich wasn’t possible before, and this will only get better gradually, like it did with music and such. Forcing progress can sometimes times have reverse outcomes. I mean, filmmaking is after all culturally elitists, like skiing and equestrianism, because these are very expensive hobbies so of course the majority will be rich people that don’t need to work outside of it so they have time, other rich contacts and rich outlooks (wich is natural). So whenever people ask them to show another perspective, it can just end up being inauthentic to an almost problematic way that makes others dislike it and not want to see or fund none of that anymore. In the time of technology and social media, people should get more united to bring attention and help out everyone grow in their own way, not depend of Hollywood! Like supporting the small businesses within your community and countries instead of demanding your community to be hired by already big corporations that will only become more powerful and hard to compete with.

@dennisbett747

It isn't actually. Underrepresented people just want to be given the same opportunities as white and rich people. Given the fact that the Oscars have had more than 83% of its voting team be white for a very long time, it obviously creates bias. White people are 63% of America. When companies make stupid, tokenistic moves like these it hurts the underrepresented because it doesn't solve the problem and people start discrediting what POC are fighting for while not even understanding what we're asking for.

I mean it’s incredibly important that those four children see themselves often in everyday media. I’m not saying these quotas are perfectly constructed or executed by any means but the general efforts of inclusion and diversity in media is incredibly important and something he would’ve liked to see along with emphasis on black history

To Phil and his team: I know you briefly talked yesterday about the wildfires on the west coast, but can you please go over the fires in Oregon this week or early next? We've been hit really hard in the last 48 hours, multiple towns gone over night, at least 100k people evacuated across the state, 35 wildfires 0 percent contained and the winds are too high for fire crews to even start fighting the fires. Whatever's not on fire is covered in smoke and ash in much of the state. It would be hugely appreciated if you could help direct people to relief efforts in the coming days! Much of what's been hit the worst were not well off areas and a lot of families are going to need help. Thank you for keeping us informed and entertained over the years!

Regarding the Oscar “woke quotas”: I feel like, just like you described, they are unfair to the independent studios and very simple and easy to meet for a large studios. I think that if they want to implement this fairly, then it should be for larger productions and be like “films with over X number of actors/crew members/etc. must have at least Y% who are minorities”
