I don't like "Trendy". I prefer gathering timeless classics that never go out of style. A collected home has a more homey comforting feel to it, than a home that completely changes every five to ten years.

I agree with “do what you love”. I’ve been collecting and refurbishing furniture for over 40 years now. There are things I have had for that long I have never gotten rid of. Including our first dining table that was solid oak from maybe the 1930’s. It’s been a dining table, oversized coffee table (new wood legs, didn’t cut down the original solid oak ones), and now it’s in our spare bedroom for the grandchildren to use as a desk when they visit. I’ve seen styles go in, out and back in many times. The classics always remain relevant.

I agree that people should decorate their homes in the style they love even if that style is not currently in vogue. I enjoy watching DIY craft channels and I will admit, I am throughly sick of white, distressed pieces. I am also tired of words being painted, glued, or stenciled on everything. I like the trend toward more traditional looks. Love the deeper, vibrant colors on accent walls or accessories. Wouldn't want the whole house painted in darker colors. And I love, love, love the return to more classically inspired artwork. BTW, you look beautiful in that burgundy sweater with your rich brown hair. Have a fantastic 2023!

Indeed. Every decor style is a gem on its own and should be kept in mind when trying to find your own decor identity even if it is not the latest trend. For all you know that style you don't know about and then discover, could be what really brings you joy when other trendier styles leave you cold.

I agree Vicki! I love the earthy, fall colors and I love a rather rustic house with the beautiful wood or brick, or stone floors with wingback chairs and leather or upholstered sofas. I love beautiful wood trims. I’ve even considered upholstering the wall up above my chair rail in my dining room!

I did the mix of traditional with modern in 2003. It was the beginning of the transitional look. Still have it and will never tire of it. I had a design store at the time with the mix. I don’t do tends.

I'm working to slowly get a more cohesive space, and to also get rid of the "compromises" I've used in the past and replace them with the real deal. I'm getting some new proper shelves for example and I'm working on a DIY for a plant pot I never really liked. My parents very kindly gifted me a great drill for Christmas and now I can go to town! A lot of these trends are great Inspo for those projects! 😁

This video was fun to watch. Beauty comes in so many shapes, sizes, styles. It is fascinating to see style evolutions and new trends. Painting velvet fabric, or any fabric seems like a very short term solution, though. Can't see that holding up unless the piece is never used. Agree that we should decorate in styles that are "beauty" to us. Real beauty is always in style.

I agree with you DiY Mom . It has taken me some time to figure out my Design Style. Now that I've got it I'm not about to let anyone tell me it's not on trend. "I don't care". There is nothing wrong with buying Trendy items IF you really like them, however buying On Trend items simply because someone else tells you to means YOU don't have a Design Style and will end up wasting a lot of time and money. Once you've learned your Design Style all that "may be" necessary in the future will be a simple refresh of some smaller items. You'll save $$$ and time without sacrificing your Design aesthetic and unnecessary concern about being On Trend. Great video. Great advice 👍. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

I have moved into "assisted living". I have my own apartment with two windows overlooking trees and I decided I would put only fun happy things in it. So I went "Hollywood Glam". I have found tons of furniture and art and fabrics. It is a happy place. I wish I have followed my own heart and my own giggles before. I have a monkey sconce (if you saw the Sunset Boulevard movie you know why I had to have a monkey) and a bedside table that looks like an old steamer trunk except it's in silver metal. And everyone smiles when they see them. Silly? of course but they didn't cost more than a regular, found everywhere wall sconce or table. In fact a lot less than most. The very word "Trend" means temporary, fleeting so before you spend a bunch of money think.

So many interesting trends! I definitely enjoy putting or updating little pieces into my home to keep it fresh and try new trends while also staying true to my own love for light and airy spaces. When I think 70s (though I loved the fashion trends) I think of wood panelling and mirrored marble veined tiles on walls. Please, none of that! 😅 Are there wall paper trends happening?

Wallpaper is huge right now. Wall paneling can sure be tricky but still great when done in certain tones of wood and in certain types of styling or decor

Is Ikea quality the same as it used to be back 16 years ago? That dresser still looked new and that might be because it was treated gently but also because the quality seems to be good. I love the 70's boho eclectic, especially the colors.

Always look for solid wood furniture at IKEA. no laminate covered pieces. I have that same sideboard. I painted it and swapped out the little drawers for shelves 8 years ago for my TV. And it's still amazing.

When it comes to furniture, I don't ever care or follow the trends. I have enough beautiful vintage furniture either passed down, bought at estate sales or from thrift stores to last me a lifetime, one of a kind pieces that will go nicely with everything and anything. The only thing I may follow when it comes to trends may be with paint colors and that to is up in the air. I've never really followed trends, I do my own thing, my home is inviting and warm. Every time my friends come over they compliment my home, I believe it's also the fact that many people follow the same trends, they don't have their own style so when you go to someone's home that follow trends they are boring and start to look the same, that when they see my home they love it.
