Professional housepainter here (it’s my dayjob)- taping is only truly necessary in tight spaces, or to prevent spray from the roller from landing on your floor and baseboard (those white little specks you’ll often find in old homes and rentals). There are a couple more special instances in which you’ll use tape, but for the most part you’ll get a much better line if you cut it in by hand. Unless you have a super unsteady hand, in which case, hire a professional. :) (sorry, self plug)

I love that you lessen the fear and mystery for others who want to create their cozy space. You rock the bared midriff tops - I’m secretly envious, as this look is not possible at my age! Deeper jewel tones set off dark wood so well. I think your best gift is how you finish the room with your accessories and arrangements. All the best, Caroline!

I knew my abilities well enough that I never took on large, whole home projects. Too much pressure for a person with ADHD. THANK YOU. I still live with my parents, in my parents house, which is totally common in Indonesia, and spending 20+ years sleeping in my childhood bedroom is nearly driving me insane. The thing is, most of the furnitures in my bedroom are incredibly heavy (mostly dark colored teak wood, wardrobe, bedframe, and bookcase are huge they will need like 6 people to move them) and I have white tiles as flooring. The peak is when I got sick of binge-watching youtubers doing room makeovers with beautiful light wood flooring, sleek all new aesthetic furnitures and so I was like "I ain't replacing my old furnitures that's just not make sense & unrealistic". So I ended up leaning towards sprucing up the decorations to 'match' the teak bedframe & wardrobe, replacing my magenta curtain (yes you read it right) with green one, making the best gallery wall I've ever made and I kinda fall in love with my bedroom again now. What you said "working with immovable objects" is very relatable to me so again THANK YOU Caroline for making this realistic video and made me realise that I am embracing what I have & I feel proud of it.

A really cool way to bring some light in (while still keeping it moody) would be to add Kasa smart LED light strips on top of the cabinets so the light bounces off the wall and upward. Would also draw attention to height of ceiling and would make the light indirect. You can also set the color to anything you want and you can schedule routines so it can change to a certain brightness or color on a specific schedule. Love what you did!!

The idea was to see them in different kinds of light as well as note how I felt about seeing them every day. Although I took several swatches there were two strong contenders. The advice was very wise: the one I thought was The One was almost invisible in artificial light and after a few days I wasn't quite so thrilled with it. Girl! Let me tell you. Your honesty just gives me life. As a designer there are so many times you just have to go with the educated decision and hope for the best. And I love that you repurposed and owned the ‘lazy’ phase you’re in. Classic!

Switch your refrigerator hinges to open the door toward the cabinets. It makes it easier to put groceries away and pull out ingredients for cooking.

Hmmm! Great results! I have been watching so many videos of very energetic people taking on major renovations and using power tools, sanding for days, shovelling huge amounts of dirt, etc., so it’s refreshing to see people who prefer the easier way (with your fantastic results). Also a lot of them are super fussy but I feel satisfied as long as it looks like someone “cared.” Don’t get me wrong I love work, I could watch it all day!

I love your makeovers because when I see the individual colors and patterns you pick out, I always feel like ehhh I don't like that but then you always make them look SO GOOD ALL TOGETHER. I love it!! I wish I could do that!

It looks so rich, inviting, and lived in now, rather than the common, somewhat, existence of a rental it was before. Because you've owned the space, it now looks loved and like a home, even though it's just your temporary place. I had my doubts, too, in the beginning, but WOW I was very surprised at the finale. 😊

On the last house (empty nesters, downsized) and owning three homes I have changed every room, The only time I tape is when I'm painting ceilings! I tape with plastic attached because ceilings have always been an afterthought. It takes minutes to paint a ceiling but forever to tape the walls and protect the furniture. When painting walls, don't drink coffee and get a great angle brush.

Absolutely love the paint color. It really makes not only the cabinets pop, but also looks so nice with all your beautiful art. I love the way your home feels like a gallery in every room. I feel like I would spend so much time just staring at everything on the walls. Such an inspiration!

I have a 110 year old home with cherry trim in every room that I refuse to paint white, so I was basically forced to paint our dining room a moody teal blue/green. Artwork and lots of plants helped. The only difference is it took me about 6 months to decide on the color and even now I’m not sure about it lol. I still need to paint our hallway so maybe I’ll try the paint you used in your kitchen. It looks great! ❤

I woke up this morning thinking “Yay! It’s Saturday - a new Caroline video!” And the kitchen makeover was just what I needed. I’m itching to upgrade my kitchen but can’t afford much. Thank you for encouraging me to make little changes where I can. I’m bummed you might be taking a pause, but you deserve a break, so go for it. I hope you miss us/this so much you can’t stay dark for long.

As for painting the kitchen.... my motto is " it is better to ask forgiveness, than permission!". You just need to paint it white when you leave. Worth being able to live with that amazing blue against the cherry cabinets. And the pattern tile elevated the entire space to a whole new level. Love it! The dry sink with a marble top is an unexpected , unique piece and grounds the whole space. Art work in a kitchen.... yes , please!!!!!! Love the gallery wall.

idk why I feel like cherry furniture is gonna have a moment again soon. It seems like everything keeps coming back around, and now that more moody interiors are in style cherry looks pretty good with it if I must say. lol

With everything made of plywood and people continuously searching something that feels more adult and timeless, I think brave people will look to cherry wood as a way to achieve that feeling.

Just an FYI to everyone about painters tape, professional painters don't use tape, it's called "time is money". 😉👍💕Also, when we were renting, the landlord allowed us to paint the apartment so long as when we left we paint it back to white again and that's what we did.

What a happy place you’ve created in your kitchen. Fresh, warm and inviting. Thanks for sharing your adventure in this. Because I am helping an 85-year-old woman move into an 1896 home from a much larger home, your ideas will help. Nicely done!

this is super relatable !!! i love doing things hands on in the garden because it's a place to be messy, but building projects involve so many costly / potentially dangerous tools + i'm disabled + priorities have changed. it's ok to not do fkn everything + over function

I love how the kitchen makeover turned out and I'm a retired landlord! Rechargeable under cabinet LED lights would be great to brighten up the space. I always think it's a mistake in a home with tall ceilings, not to install at least 42" high upper cabinets. The 30" height is too short and that extra foot provides a lot of storage, especially when there are so few upper cabinets.

Love! I just did the same thing to my small butler's pantry with a navy, hot pink, and kelly green peel and stick from Target. Now it's my favorite space in the house. I went in there yesterday to get a candle and was so overcome with delight from looking at it that I forgot why I was even in there!

@@soylentlolmilk You're so lucky to have panelling! Definitely lean into the history:) There are a couple of design KZbinrs aside from Caroline who are also doing really cool stuff in historical homes. And I think Lone Fox has used board and batten a lot and switched things up fairly regularly, so I'd say his videos are also a great shout.

This was so fun to be along on the ride for! Great job minimizing the things you didn’t love by creating a *new relationship* between that and the room with the color/backsplash/accessories! It is so pretty and vibrant and fits your vibe while being different. Also, that dry sink marketplace find - omg 😲 Makes me wanna live in the NE for a while so I can score some great pieces like that! Cheers, Caroline! P.S. I now eat frozen dates also 👏🏼😄

I really like your advice about just asking (your landlord, about painting). This is true for every aspect of life: Never assume what somebody's response is going to be and that way rob yourself of the opportunity to ask. IF your landlord says no to colored wall paint: You can custom-order solid colored peel-and-stick wallpaper.

This is my first time watching and I love your attitude! It makes good sense to go opposite on the color wheel. With just paint only, you were fighting the color. By introducing your own items into the space, it reduces the color and makes it more personal to you. Great job and keep up the snark, very refreshing!
