Love to see them when they were so young and as you said you can tell that they were talented. Maurice said that in those days Robin was the comedian, he was the straight man and Barry was the big brother. Although they started singing so young, when Barry got a guitar for Christmas when he was 9 years old and Robin and Maurice were 6, they were getting into trouble with the authorities to the point where Barry was put on probation for taking a play car belonging to a police officer’s son. Robin was a fire bug and they set several fires, stole things like pocket knives, until the day Barry told them that they had to decide what they wanted to do. If they were serious about singing then they had to be in the straight and narrow and dedicate themselves to singing. Barry told them that they were going to be famous and Maurice said, sure, because he was their big brother and he knew, and the rest is history.

@Angela Sanchez as Mo called Rob "The Flame " and from Mom Barbara "Robin was rather naughty. He set fires in the hedges, under the bed"😄😄 And their other favourite target was billboards. Robin quit setting fires after he almost went to reform school after he and a friend set a shed behind a shop on fire. The Manchester police suggested to their parents that emigrating to Australia might be a good idea!

Believe it or not, i remember these three on Brian Hendersons Bandstand. They were regulars, singing their own music and doing covers. At this time Barry was writing their songs. His "the three kisses of love" still sounds great.

There are about a dozen videos on KZbin from when they were on Brian Henderson's Bandstand from 1963 to 1965. Mostly performing cover versions of popular songs but they did get a few of their own on the show too. Just search Brian Henderson's Bandstand Bee Gees on KZbin and it should pull them up if you would like to check them out. If you really want your mind blown, look up Robin singing "Somewhere" from Westside Story. The recording studio they used had backing tracks and Robin picked "Somewhere" to try out his grown-up voice. He's 15 years old in the recording and he sounds amazing!

Their Mom made those spiffy vests! She cut up a pair of gold leather evening shoes to make the B G letters.She also ironed a LOT of white shirts! When they started getting jobs like this, they became the family breadwinners. Dad Hugh quit his job to drive them around Australia. Before this and back in Manchester, they struggled and didn't have much money. Robin said dinner for the family was often a box of chips (French fries) and he'd often watch his Dad counting pennies trying to figure out how to make it last the week. They often moved in the middle of the night when Dad couldn't pay the rent.

Barry & Robin have said that whoever came up with the main idea of a song would usually sing the lead ( but not always.) Robin sings the lead in a 1960s fave of mine called "And the Sun Will Shine" as well as the 1990s song "Rings Around the Moon " , both a favorite of mine and ballads. Robin also sings lead in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" & "Love Me" but I also enjoy his 1980's "How Old Are You?" Which was on a solo album. The lyrics in all if these "Robin songs" are killer. For me it is so much better to review the lyrics when or before listening. Nice reaction!❤

Which is likely why Barry sang more leads. Arif Mardin, Albhy Galuten & George Martin can attest to that!

Robin had a tremendous singing range much he did not use later but Listen to the early 'Monday's Rain' he goes from deep at the beginning to his more usual flights at the end.

Seen this a few times. Born with talent. Unfair to have so much in one family even including their older sister Lesley who once filled in for Robin! There is an even older clip from Australian TV doing one of Barry's songs, "Time is passing by". Robin was such an extrovert when he was young that their manager said he scared people. After the terrible train wreck (Hither Green where 50 were killed) when he was 17 he changed and became very introspective. He had to extricate dead and living maimed bodies, most with rails through them and helped try to calm people during on the spot amputations. A rail missed decapitation him by inches. He said that stayed with him for life. His twin though miles away stood up and said "Something has happened to Robin". Even after that Barry said "Nobody could compete with Robin's wit. He and Barry were also hellions. The Manchester police suggested the family move to Australia and they did! To watch their musical evolution is amazing. "Wine and Women" was a transition when they were teens. They adapted the Beatle haircuts. Robin said he threw away the Brylcreem because his head kept slipping off the pillow. "Skiffle" was the craze at that time. Lonnie Donegan the king of skiffle took all kinds of songs and jazzed them up. For a giggle for yourself, look up "Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight". He influenced the Bee Gees and even The Beatles.

@Susie Q Yup, Rob said the hellish things he saw at Hither Green that night made him a more compassionate person and he'd never take things for granted after surviving that. Sobering experience for a 17 year old.

Look at their songwriting credits for themselves and others. Robin cowrote 90+%. Maurice also wrote and was the musical genius who found the right chords and arrangements. Robin also did 6 solo LP's that were very big, especially in Europe. None could read music. It was all in their heads. There is NO WAY they were throwaways. Too many people think that because they only know the disco era and the emphasis, not unlike today, was on Barry for his matinee idol looks and it is a shame. Barry did get the ball rolling when they were kids but all were vital.

Maurice was always involved in Robin's 'solo' projects.. . be it as producer musician or in which ever capacity required....he worked quietly behind the scenes without fanfare.....
@susieq98012 жыл бұрын
@@rbaruah8790 - I am well aware of that. Mo often worked with both of his brothers under the radar usually doing so to avoid conflicts between them. He worked with both Barry and Robin during the split in '69 when he contractually shouldn't have assisted Robin at all. Mo was always as neutral as he could be and would not get into the fights. Regardless, those LP's were released as "solo" LP's BUT Maurice was always credited in the liner notes. Earlier compositions, (Robin's Reign and Sing Slowly Sisters) were composed by Robin. Robin also composed with others like Blue Weaver (like "Hold on to my love" for Jimmy Ruffin). Mo composed solo and with his brother in law Billy Lawrie. I in no way mitigated Mo's contribution. ALL were partners and all were valuable. I said there was no way they were throwaways.

Maurice gets a bad rap. He was their musical director and wrote the music for a very large number of their songs. He wrote lyrics, too. And he was the one that played a variety of instruments, and without a lesson on any of them. He also sings and has a great falsetto. Not to mention audiences loved him! Maurice or Mo as he was called, like his brothers, didn't read music and had no instruction in music at all. He was a musical genius. And it was Mo that refereed the battles between Robin and Barry...unlike Yoko, he kept the band together. And he had demons of his own, which he was strong enough and man enough to admit to and slay. He deserves so much more respect than he gets.
