Gold wrap actually does work! Im not a fan of how flashy it is but i helped wrap some wires on a evo8 that were too close to the turbo manifold. After about 30 minutes of hard pulls they were still cool compared to everything eles in the engine bay

Just a FYI it's heatsoak not disappation. Intakes don't generate heat they absorb it, so no need to dissipate it. Run an engine for awhile you grab an aluminum intake tube, I'll grab a plastic one, see who gets the burn and who doesn't. That's why K&N shows a bigger hp gain on the plastic intake tube over the aluminum one. Just my .02

+Inner Ear Thing These types of wraps are designed to reflect infrared, rather than absorb it. That helps prevent getting the intake ductwork (or really any surface) heat-soaked via radiant heat. A great application of this is to line the engine or gearbox closest to the exhaust to keep your gear oil from overheating. Don't expect to see a notable power increase, though.

@jonathandoupe32788 жыл бұрын
Just for all you guys giving this poor guy grief and being doubting Thomas's yourselves, this does actually work. Unfortunately he's described what it does slightly incorrect. The heat isn't dissipated as jrzyboy99 so rightly says " Intakes don't generate heat they absorb it, so no need to dissipate it.". What the air intake pipe is doing is absorbing heat to whatever degree from the engine bay and then the intake air will be absorbing that heat thus increasing the air intake temperature which we all know robs the engine of power. Although the metal pipe will absorb heat, so will black plastic. remember black absorbs heat more than any other colour (remember your physics lessons at school). So to prevent the air intake pipe from absorbing the heat from the engine bay and thus transferring it to the intake air, then the gold wrap will work. However for a proper job the entire air intake system should be treated. Companies like Zircotec in the UK who supply heat management coatings to the Formula 1 industry and high performance cars, their coatings really make a difference and you can see measured performances online. I don't work for Zircotec, but I'm a domestic heating engineer myself so I know a bit about heat it's properties and how it works, but I've got an Audi allroad 2.7T, and I've spent quite a bit on heat management in the engine bay by replacing certain black plastic pipes with ceramic coated stainless steel pipes, zircotec coated exhaust manifolds, exhaust down pipes and front section exhaust pipes, with a larger air filter. This was done in stages, and I can certainly say that the heat management certainly made differences to the engines performance in being able to perform better in higher revs when the engine would previously be getting hot and running out of power. The initial way I viewed getting my engine to perform better without remapping or making any major upgrades was this. I looked at how an athlete would train for an event. He wouldn't go down the gym and just start building up muscle and making themselves more powerful, they would firstly get their breathing better and improve what they already had, and make the best of the muscle mass they already have, i.e. get aerobically fitter. That's what I've done with my engine as to say, and it's made a vast improvement just getting the air flow improved, with no ecu remap...yet :-)

If i am not mistaken that tape is heat reflective tape. not heat dissipating tape. What u did here is wraped your intake in a material that insulates it from heat. Not with a material that dissipates heat. the end result is that you want to Reflect heat away from your intake and its correct but you did it thinking the opposite. A material that dissipates heat equally absorbs heat and the engine bay is much hotter than the temps your pipe gets . Also i believe it is a stainless steel pipe and not aluminium. Good video though
@SAVEMONEYYY9 жыл бұрын
It reflects heat from the engine and exhaust. The air it sucks is colder than the engine. But if the engine and exhaust is warming up the tube it warms the air. So the wrap reflects the heat and problem solved.
@PostTraumaticChessDisorder6 жыл бұрын
A lot of things mentioned above are physically wrong. We assume that the inside of the piping is cooler than the ambient temperature outside of it (thus in the engine compartment). This means the hotter air will want to move to the cooler place; the inside of the pipe. There is no such thing as dissipation involved in this process, because that would suggest that the piping has to get rid of its heat. As we stated, it 'attracts' heat since it's cooler than ambient surroundings. To prevent heat entering the piping, a form of insulation is needed. This form depends of the type of heat transfer. The gold tape, which I assume is polyimide, has heat radiation reflecting properties. Although a certain amount of radiation is entirely possible in this setting, the lions share comes from heat convection; the heat transfer by hotter (air) molecules to cooler (air) molecules. This said, the tape's effect will be negligible. Insulating against either convection or conduction can be done by applying materials with low thermal conductivity, denoted with the Greek letter Lambda). Some well known examples are glass wool cloths or a form of polystyrene. Increasing thickness of these materials will mean increasing thermal insulation, but this will most likely result in clunky looking designs or materials actually catching fire. Furthermore it is worth noting that the ambient temperature and the intake temperature, Delta T, won't differ much anyway. At least not when the pipes are not running over excessively hot objects like a turbo

Yes, theoretically if you wrap your intake in heat-resistant tape it will reflect the heat coming from your engine bay to keep the piping cooler for your intake. This actually has a function, and the gold isn’t cosmetic, it has real thermal properties. This kind of tape would work better with aluminum piping though, because heat dissipates quicker from aluminum rather than plastic.
@jellofuel5 жыл бұрын
The video is a really good tutorial on the intake wrap install. I might be overthinking this, but if I installed on my 350z, I'd likely need a thermal gasket to prevent heat from the heat-soaked manifold from dissipating into my aluminum intake. (long tube, with filter in front of radiator) To me, that seems like the most effective method of preventing the intake piping from acting like a heat sink. Awesome video, and I have the same problem with those MAF screws lol
@alphaforce69987 жыл бұрын
The DEI foil does help reduce the effect that radiant heat would have on whatever is wrapped with it, and the same could be achieved with aluminum foil (shiny side out). This would be a lot more useful on a turbo car, esp on intercooler pipes. Wrapping headers is also a very good way to cut down under-hood temps. In this case it's more about appearance then function; but that doesn't mean that there is no situation where this wouldn't be beneficial. In fact, if you race an SC/Turbo car you'll discover that heat soak is a very real problem for a lot of cars. Side note - you can wrap your headers with the fiber wrap first, then add the foil on top of the wrap to cut radiant heat down drastically, like 50% or more.

If this works, the gold tape _must_ insulate the intake from the heat created by the engine. More specifically, the air inside the intake cannot become cooler once inside the intake (without work) because the engine compartment is warmer. Here's why: we know from thermodynamics (2nd law) that heat moves from hot to cold. In other words, your intake cannot naturally dissipate heat (become cooler) by dumping heat into a hotter environment (the engine compartment). What you need to do (and perhaps what you've done) is insulate the intake so that heat cannot as easily transfer from the hotter engine compartment to the cooler intake environment.

I've enjoyed this video I've never laughed so hard it's not an intake manifold it is duct work that connects to ur intake manifold it does not add any power in the least. and the 2 sensors ud find in ur duct work it would be Mass Airflow Sensor as u said or an Intake Air Temp. ur MAP sensor is usually on the intake manifold, and if u think metal dissipates heat faster than plastic ur crazy usually the shiny u have is to keep radiant heat down inside the duct work
@4G128 жыл бұрын
The gold foil in the McLaren F1 was not there to lower engine temps and in fact actually helps maintain engine heat within the engine bay. In fact, it's there to insulate the carbon reinforced plastic bay from the engine heat by REFLECTING the heat away from the surface it's adhered to, since CRP does not do well under such high temperatures.

@VolksTrieb8 жыл бұрын
Also wrong. it reflects a certain range of infrared light (or certain range of the spectrum). Heat is the movementspeed of particles. You dont reflect that. If the air is hot its still warming up the gold. If it would not be so you coulnt melt gold lol...
@VolksTrieb8 жыл бұрын
Also gold does dissipate heat. Better that aluminium, but the gold is that thin it wont make a lot of a difference because the heattransfer of the aluminium below is worse than that of gold. Still using a thing goldcoat does reflect some heatradiation (lower IR) that has been emitted off of the engine and such but its not worth the cost at all. You still have an airflow in the enginebay which cools stuff way faster than a bit of some square inches of goldplating lol.

Exactly what heat transfer theory are you applying here? Specifically as it relates to the cold air induction. I would imagine...and I am not an expert engine designer (having only studied the subject for 6 years in my youth)...one would want to insulate cold air external to the vehicle from the much warmer temperatures of the engine compartment. Gold would not be my choice as an insulator unless I was Goldfinger. Looks great though.

it would be cool if you grab the stock intake and record some temp measurements, and do the same with the gold-fitted intake. give the results that the gold has a dramatic effect on the temps. i would have loved to see more info, but what you gave was good enough to get the idea down on installing it and what it can do.

@TenBuckTraveler8 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I wonder if this does anything. The intake seems so short and the filter is pulling in air from the engine bay anyway. IDK if the air passing through the intake is in there long enough to be affected by the temp of the intake pipe. Maybe if the pipe was longer and pulling colder air from the front of the bumper.
@Balduran76 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't this make the air inside the intake hotter? Because yes gold dissipates heat, however, where is the heat coming from, and where is it going? This is a rhetorical question, because heat inside the engine bay is convective heat not radiative heat, it's best to use insulation to isolate what's supposed to be cold from heat. For best results, you should have the intake and exhaust coated in ceramic, and have it done professionally.

@milanmastracci9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Le Sticking an aftermarket intake is not 100% going to give you more power. However if you can keep your intake colder, the air going into the engine is going to be smaller in particle size, meaning you can put more of it in each cylinder. With that being said, you can then put more fuel in there and THAT will create more power. More often than not, aftermarket intakes are made to just give you a different noise.
@thedailyracecar20648 жыл бұрын
not sure of the point. the intake pipe itself might not get as hot but the air likely wont be any cooler because, judging from the position of the pod filter, you are still sucking in engine bay air. stock airbox was probably better as it sucked in cooler air than your short ram. neat project tho mate. also the tb cleaner can soften and weaken rubber and silicone couplers. so avoid that.

Maybe I'm just not understanding the logistics, but how does the heat dissipate from the air intake? The air flowing through that tube should be cooler than the engine bay itself, so it can't 'cool off' since cold is the absence of heat (plenty of it in the engine bay). At the very best I suspect you could reflect the engine heat so the air doesn't warm up on it's way to the engine? But dissipating heat from just makes 0 sense to me. Can anyone explain how that is supposed to work on the air intake?

Hey man when you do this can you see the wrinkles of the air gaps from the gold
@milanmastracci9 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Ruiz I didn't get air gaps but you can see the wrinkles however. If you are working with a flat surface it is quite easy but when you are working with a curved intake, it is a bit more difficult
@danielruiz22539 жыл бұрын
+milanmastracci OK man because I want to do that to my g35's intake

aluminum may not dissipate heat exactly as well as gold, however it is far lighter and cheaper. aluminum foil does a fabulous job of being a heat shield. the key is you have to have an air gap between the part you are trying to protect from heat and the heat shield itself and have proper airflow. put alumin foil in a 500°F oven for 10 minutes and then take it out. within 5 seconds you will be able to touch it with your bare hands. do you really need a heat shield better than that? you are not driving a racecar lol.

Would a short ram intake make my exhaust any louder I have a borla s type on a 2012 civic
@milanmastracci8 жыл бұрын
+John DeBonis Nope. The only thing that would affect the exhaust note is everything after the cylinders :)

Lol, that's gold wrap, the gold in race cars is for heat barriers on the firewall etc and is an insulating cloth/fibre layer with a gold layer on the surface to reflect heat

do you know if I can do this in Cali and if I'm aloud to take off the smog sticker and put it back on
@milanmastracci9 жыл бұрын
James Foster Its not messing with the emissions systems by any means. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do this. I'm not sure where the sticker is on your car

Why a short ram intake and not a CAI. Heat wrap headers, intake manifold and route intake far from engine

Lol I'm more interested to see the audio system you got hooked up in there

Why don't people use titanium? Doesn't it dissipate heat the best, like the black bird SR-71. And it's also really light right. Why hasn't some one used that.
@bastijssen99318 жыл бұрын
+ThePrankDudes moneys
@milanmastracci8 жыл бұрын
+ThePrankDudes You would use titanium to insulate your pipe to keep either the heat in, or the cold out. This is why you will see it on exhaust systems and turbochargers.
@freeignition9 жыл бұрын
so is that really gold?? I'm just curious
@milanmastracci9 жыл бұрын
ThePeoplesElbow100 Yup! 18 karat gold wrap with a glass laminated coating. The gold is the reason why it can dissipate so much heat so easily
