for those who try this DEI header wrap, wear a long sleeve, gloves, and a mask if indoors without ventilation. this stuff itches and will give you a sore throat if you inhale some of the little fibers. otherwise its great stuff.

Not even remotely close to the truth. Unless you got some really cheap crap. Ive wrapped at least a dozen headers and motorcycle exhausts. No gloves. No mask. Shorts and t shirt. Never had so much as a single itch.

This type of wrap is a basalt material. You don’t need to wet since it’s already flexible. But a fiberglass wrap you’ll need to wet before applying.

Stainless steel does fail when too hot. Race teams use the highest grade possible and ceramic them for a reason... this is tech from the 60s that people still use... unbelievably. "Hey KZbin, today I'm going to show you how I'm going to destroy my headers and how you can do the same to yours". Also, they are a huge fire risk if oil gets on them.... buy you knew that right?

If you wrap the header too thick the header will hold too much heat causing it to become brittle. Yeah the engine bay might be “cooler” but it’s not good for the piping

John Vesely how you doing john im in a bind between putting on a cam or not for the simple fact that im afraid that my transmission will give i wasnt going with anything big i have a 2008 silverado crew cab with about 65,000 miles on truck i was thinking putting 220 220 cam with dod delete kit with of course a tune have you had any issues with your transmission? Or what have you done to prevent excessive beat down on your tranny i was maybe thinking install a servo and a transmission cooler?
@elmajicovalluco
@elmajicovalluco 6 жыл бұрын
John Vesely thanks for the response bud there is hardly any videos on these subjects on youtube like you said in you last video but yeah i am aware of this issue i might just do a dod delete kit with spring and lifter kit with a tune for the time being since this truck is my daily driver and only was going with cam and performance option since my lifter alreadt gave out common issue on 5.3 motors im sure your aware of that nut akyways keep uo the good videos buddy you got yourself a subcriber right here my man! All the way from south texas!
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 6 жыл бұрын
If your going to go through all that trouble I would cam it while you have the heads off and the engine torn down. I have the 220 cam and before I put the headers on it’s was noticeably faster than stock, but it only gained 35whp so it wouldn’t be too harsh on the tranny since it’s not making full power while the stock exhaust manifold was choking up the engine. But once you put the long tubes on to let the engine breathe you may see another 20-30 hp gain.
@elmajicovalluco
@elmajicovalluco 6 жыл бұрын
John Vesely mmmmm yeah that why i decided to go with the 220 and also true since the are installing a new stock cam with the dod but like i said just scared since its my daily driver you know bud
@JohnVesely
@JohnVesely 6 жыл бұрын
As long as your not hard on it everyday and just drive it normal it should last. Plus your truck has pretty low miles for an 08 so that’s a plus. And whoever you have doing the tune just have the shift firm but not aggressive.

If you have some common sense then you know that too much of something is bad. That's why heat is good up to a point. The exhaust manifold already gets hot as shit so why would you make it hotter? Some headers start to glow red, do they need to get hotter? You can probably wrap or damage the primaries when using this stuff. Sometimes you can't just go by what you hear. If anything the best place to wrap an exhaust is way further down the pipes like after the catalitic converter to keep that part at a higher temp because the further you go from the motor the cooler the e exhaust gets. Another thing is if you use this wrap the header gets hotter and that means the heat is transfer the the head. I mean the header is bolted to the head and most heads are aluminum. Aluminum transfers heat very well so this means the head will also get additional heat from the header.
@Shaunemayfield
@Shaunemayfield 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you understand how these work. Hotter air moves faster. With wrapped headers the air moves faster through and out the exhaust, the opposite of what you presume. With unwrapped headers the air moves slower therefore heating the pipes more and move that hot air into the engine bay. Slower air means increased back pressure pushing the heat back to the engine, again the opposite of your explanation. Wrapped pipes will decrease heat back to the heads, that’s why this has been used for dozens and dozens of years.

Hey John, looks good man, I was curious about something though. If having the wrap lap more than .25" causes excessive heat buildup and essentially causes the pipes to become brittle, then how does double wrapping over them from the collector to where they separate not cause a similar issue?
@MrRoyalfelix
@MrRoyalfelix 5 жыл бұрын
shaun73084 I would guess because it's not 100 percent double wrapped goes around a section of the pipe again but not completely around kinda like if you cover it self with a sheet then only cover half your body with another sheet you wouldn't get as hot... hope that makes sense...

Well yeah kinda, all the wrap does is insulate the heat from the pipes from going into the engine bay.
@Shaunemayfield
@Shaunemayfield 2 жыл бұрын
Hotter exhaust moves faster. When they’re wrapped the gases move quicker. Unwrapped the metal pipes are absorbing the heat more and putting it into the engine bay. So exhaust wrap eliminates engine bay heat AND increasing exhaust gas exit speed (increased flow)!

themusicmastera380 how is that please explain this
@milenkogt
@milenkogt 4 жыл бұрын
@@NaviPureMusic not necessarily will he have to replace lol. Its stainless,probably 409 and not mild steel. The reason DEI states to overlap a 1/4" in all areas as best as possible to help prevent to much heat entrapment which could potentially cause the substrate/base metal to become brittle. You dont have to, but you can apply the silicone coating to the header primary surface and the wrap itself to help prevent water retention and it helps keep the wrap together. The titanium wrap from DEI is made from Basalt. Basalt is a essentially volcanic rock molten down and extruded into fibrous glass strands. It is also used to reinforce concrete in some applications. Bottom line, make sure you base metal is of good quality stainless and follow the wrapping procedure as best you can since each application is different. Otherwise, you can utilize ceramic coating like Zircotec or Swaintech coatings which uses an aluminum oxide or zirconium oxide powder transferred via plasma spray to the metal substrate which reduces thermal transfer as well as provides corrosion resistance.
