Blanching pot leeks for showtime. Time to ripen and dress onions and also defoliating tomato plants.

I wish my Maisey tomatoes looked as good i had problems with germinating the seeds now getting loads of blossom end rot but on happier note my onions and blanched leeks are doing well 👍

Hi Tom, the Maisey seed was from one of my own tomatoes I selected from the original plants about 3 years ago. Try selecting your best fruit and use your own seed. I’m pleased your leeks and onions are going well. Best of luck.

Hi Chris, thank you for showing an interest from the other side of the world. One of my best pals from years ago moved to Australia and still keeps in touch. My accent is maybe putting you slightly of the mark. The JSN seedlings are from a leek I bred a few years ago which won our National championship . When any grower breeds a new leek which is successful then the leek needs to be named. In the past leeks have been known to take the initials of the breeder, this started with a famous leek named TL (Tommy Löwen) almost 50 years ago. When I bred the JSN it was named John Soulsby New. Hence JSN . I hope this explains. Happy growing.😄

Hi John, I have noticed that a few blanch leeks have got suckers have you had any could it be the change in temperature and excess heat.

Hello Colin, suckers in Blanch leeks are becoming a major problem and have become more common in recent years. Some breeds seem more prone to this problem than others. However I have found by giving too much artificial light to increase growth can cause suckers to appear at a later date . Also any check to the plant will cause suckers to appear. Hope this helps.

Hi John, when is the best time to start onion pips and would they need to be soaked in Rovral or Domestos before planting out.

Hi Colin, onion pips should be kept on the head as long as possible. Possibly until October . Then store them in a cool place until late November or early December . I would not use Domestos on them but you could give a spray of fungicide once they start to grow.

In the very competitive hobby of leek growing I believe to get red cards at open shows it's is necessary for your plants to get little or no check throughout it life cycle

Certainly don’t want any checks, but this is we’re we learn each year. We will see where the rest of them end up.🤞
