I was really torn bc part of the appeal of cruising was getting Davis (and Rob) disconnected for tech. Yes, it was very helpful on our crossing yesterday. Thanks for your comment & watching!

Shannon, thank you so much for putting your emotions out there for all to see. As my wife and I continue to prepare for transitioning to full time sailors/travelers (inside our 5 year window) the emotional aspect of leaving our two boys, extended family and friends behind is something that we still have to deal with.

You are so organized! I really enjoy watching your channel. I like your meal planning ideas. I’m glad everything is working out! It would be hard leaving loved ones behind. I also work in healthcare. So I understand all your planning and worry. A lot of times people who do not work in healthcare do not understand. It takes alot of courage to share everything on KZbin. Your catamaran is beautiful!

Hey guys! Great episode. I hope you guys have the new washer bolted down. In rough water that washer will go flying if not bolted down. I did not hear you mention bolting it down... I am glad you are heading out to sea soon. You will miss your Mom and family but will be able to fly home a few times during your journey... safe travels!

@@SailingParadiseFalls Glad to hear it is strapped down! You are FINALLY setting off for the Bahamas, that is spectacular! I am sure it will be hard on all, to be separated. It will get less stressful over time and the kids can come visit you or vice-versa as your journey progresses... You ALL seem like great people! Wishing you safe travels and we thank you for allowing US to be part of your journey!! 💯

Good idea on the dehydrated and freeze dried foods. I had wondered why no one did it, figured there must be a reason. As for tasks, make a prioritized list, don't mark off til completed. So if you get interupted, you can go back to the task you were doing. Many boats have a dry erase board or several for task lists.

Not sure why more people don’t use them? They last forever (or longer than we’ll be on the boat) and super easy to put together. Time will tell. I may have horror stories to tell about them 😆

Great job! Projects are never ending. As you are finding out it’s prioritizing. Not sure if you have it on your list but if you are constantly running the ac. Check the ac pan drains, they will get clog just like home ac units. I place a small tablet of bromide(spa) to kill algae growth. We have 7 units and it’s never ending. Also planning a back up AC pump and skimmer. I also put wifi high level water alarm on each pan. This was last week’s project.. Good luck in your crossing. God bless.

I have 3 children all young adults and it's so hard when they are not near.. but go enjoy this time and never feel bad or guilty when things arise bc they will.. it's in our ways as a woman to feel guilty if we aren't there to pick up pcs to the bowl some one else breaks.. cliche but true

Hope you don’t mind me commenting, I have crossed half the globe and we live on board with a 4 yr old....And I actually have children on the other side of the globe….hence I have some experience in what you are going through…Project , projects, and more projects… as long as you focus on that you’ll be next to the neighbours who are also not going anywhere. Now lets be clear that there’s a few things that need to be in good working order and for that you need to prioritize. But agree with yourself that the boat is never ready, and always capable if, 1) the water stays on the outside and 2) the engines work, or at least one works 100%. 3) you have either a water maker or large tanks full with clean water. 4) enough diesel and some petrol for the dinghy. Along the way you can purchase things but if you feel that certain things need to work and they are broken, make sure they are on board with sufficient tools, electric wires, spares etc. and then…. GO ! DON’T WAIT! Don’t wait for all to be finished, as there will always be something. The boat is never ready…95% is really good…And as long as its workable…you be better off to go sailing and do some repairs while at anchor and then sip a beer.. Obviously safety first, there is your priority. Check the safety items, and then all visible hardware before you leave. The washing machine…great but no priority to install as long as you have enough cloths for the next two weeks.. you have time to install. Things that are mandatory by government are also important, and yes you should comply etc… do those first, get it over. Then ask yourself for every project: can we sail without ? if yes, not first priority. Make a list e.g. in excel or and go through your list with that question in mind, second question, what’s the risk? If you cannot accept the risk, then do first. Then those meals? Are you leaving for a passage of 75 days? Seems a bit of a mamma is concerned thing, just make sure you have ingredients, you’re not healing hence you can cook even in 25 kn of wind… emergency meals are a great idea, have some 2-3 days on board not more. Fresh food is still the better choice. But mamma is concerned… I understand, just take it easy on yourself, sailing is supposed to be fun… just go… As for leaving the 18 year old children at what they love the most, is harder for you then for them. Do remember if they fall, you are too late, even if you are in the same town…. You can not stop them sometimes to get hurt, don’t worry, they’ll be fine. When serious problems occur, there’s always flights, cars etc to get back faster than by boat…. Likely you never need it. Just plan a holiday back home, for lets say 3 -4 month ahead, than you will see all is well. Just a break for 2 weeks and then go again, next time for 6 months… etc they get used to it, as do you. Meanwhile you can call. Luckily now there’s starlink so you can whatsapp or call daily if you like….but my advice… don’t do that. Tell them that they can call you, and you’ll call back next week…give them and yourself some space… I know that comes with nest fear… mostly suffered by moms.. have fun (sorry its long winded : happy sailing

Thank you SO much for your wisdom! We are currently sitting in Ft Lauderdale waiting on weather to cross to the Bahamas in the next 1-2 days! We had so many projects because we were waiting on the stainless and canvas trades that we hired. We headed out of Jax as soon as those were completed. I feel like we will always have a “To Do” list but that’s ok. I just wanted others planning to do this that leaving family is hard - harder than I expected at least. Your right, everyone is only a flight away. I’m trying to let go and enjoy this adventure. Difficult for this type A person to do but I am working on it! Thank you for taking the time to comments - your very much appreciated!

And the passage meals were something that I felt would make my life easier. I planned to make about 75 to get us to Australia and if we like them I’ll make more from Australia back to US. We’ve really enjoyed them on lazy nights as well as our passage to Ft Lauderdale just to boil water and have an instant meal.

Unlike children free sailing channels that don’t have an established life to give up, you are moving from a traditional to an adventurous life - a much more significant life change! At least in todays world you can still remain connected - I hope to join the adventurous life in a few years basically at the end of my traditional life. It would be after the kids have left the nest though making it a bit easier. My wife has those same emotions of leaving what is known, and being away from family. Donate for a Dream
