Atlantic OCEAN Passage Jacksonville to Ft Lauderdale | Ep 29

We leave Jacksonville on October 16, 2023 and head south to Ft. Lauderdale to get our lithium installed and solar connected by Just Catamarans. Failed attempt to raise the sails in rough seas. Shannon overcomes her seasickness and the crew has one of their most epic days with an after dinner show from dolphins and the launch of SpaceX behind the boat.
Follow our families journey as we plan to Circumnavigate the Globe in 3-4 years on a budget of $4,300/mo. We plan to leave the US in October 2023 and visit 26 countries and 6 continents.

So great that the adventure is started. Hope you caught lots of lobsters. The Leopard 42 (brand new just taking the plastic off) we were on had to pretty dead into the wind to get up past the lazy jacks at first. Once you got past the 2nd reef (first one up) it cleared easy

Yes, raising the main is frustrating but getting a little easier. We actually sailed yesterday without engines yesterday to Manjack Cay and that was pretty amazing. Glad you enjoyed your charter!

Love the honesty and reality. As a mere armchair sailor still chartering and aspiring to do what you're doing, every episode is encouraging. On the lazy jacks sheets, is it possible to loosen them and temporarily pull them out of the way? I've seen other KZbinrs show doing that (on monohulls), and having struggled with what you went through, can't believe there isn't a better system.

when raising the main put autopilot on wind vane mode and keep her in irons. also consider raising before youre in the ocean.

I much prefer to raise the main on anchor. It was tough being in rolly seas. We are getting a little better. Rob now keeps her head to wind and I raise the main. Thank you so much for the advice!!

Use autopilot and engines to hold boat directly into wind. Helps with sails going up. I've also seen people not loosen boom until past the lazy Jack's.

We plan to make a video on the budget. I can tell you that people do this on $1,000 - $10,000+ per month. A lot depends on how much you eat out and drink and expectations for entertainment. The past month was amazing and we caught 70% of our protein (fish, conch and lobster) and only spent $12 on fresh food and $100 of diesel/gas. We’ve been mostly on the out islands of the Abacos so entertainment has been snorkeling, hikes and paddleboarding. 😊

Good video, yea, sea sickness is no bueno, as a NP, can you prescribe yourself Scopolamine? Having fished offshore a lot, and dived, I won't go offshore without that patch, little Jesus lives in there and keeps me safe from sea sickness. Of course, it has to be taken prior to getting sea sick. At any rate, love the fact your vids show every day life and challenges of this new adventure you guys are on. Good luck, and the first rocket launch I saw when we moved to Orlando was a night time one, so cool, even living in Jax now, I can see the launch and still watch it.

I tried scopolamine on passage from BVI and I felt like I had a 3 day hangover. Past 2 passages have been free of symptoms. I no longer drink coffee morning of passage, wear my Emeterm nausea band and have meclizine 25mg nearby and take at 1st sign of nausea. Thank you for your comment and following along!

LOVE -your videos - honest reactions to all the problems you encounter and by the the way solve -- it does reflect a more true sense of life at sea for new comings to the life --- and sea sickness will pass with each ruff sea you encounter your tolerance will build up --- only advice i can see i would give -- its kind of a rule with long timers is keep a empty sink and clean table / house everything has a place --before you go off watch everytime -- makes life a lot easier for the next chap on duty sick or not sick -- good luck the space shot was amazing glad you could witness it at sea - not many do -- keep up the good work and keep truckin -it all gets easier -- well not really -- just different days different problems - but you stared with a boat load of prbblems they left you with when you took over and now you have alot less -- god bless

You are very lucky! Rob never gets sick either. Our boat is a 2018 Leopard Catamaran. She’s our floating condo. We had always been power boaters and when Rob mentioned getting a sailboat I had not interest until he showed me KZbin videos of catamarans. Have been hooked since. Thanks for following our journey!

I was under the impression that destine doesn’t count unless your 16yr. I am wrong?

Not sure destine? Actually, you should look into the Rya requirements if you want to Charter in the med or anywhere else for that matter it seems to be a higher standard than the US Coast Guard. I have a 100-ton masters just took the sailing endorsement and I'm not sure the charter outfits and the med will even recognize my credentials so I'd look into which makes a better fit for you or for Davis. The Rya goes by Miles versus days. Starting a sailing resume at his age guarantees him a Skipper's job being paid it is certainly a really good side gig getting through college and get him that really good career job and have the Skipper's license on the side he'll be set@@SailingParadiseFalls

I am trying to find a solution for my wife and other sailors (most of whom are woman btw) that suffer from seasickness. And although we have some solutions they are not for every ine. Would you mind to share with me whether you have dizziness rom small movements of the boat and whether the wristband you have has any effect on that? (headache, dizziness, full head, central pain between the eyes etc) I do understand how this wristband works but fear that this is only half of the solution for seasickness. Thanks upfront. We'll keep following. Those battens and the lazy jacks is why we have an in mast furling sail.

I am fine with the day to day movements and only get sick on passages. I had several patients (pregnant moms) swear by the Emeterm band. It has 5 levels. I start on level 1 and go up as needed. My First symptoms are lethargy and yawning. I also have a nausea essential oil stuck (ginger, peppermint, lemon, lavender, chamomile & fennel) that helps as well. I try to stay well hydrated the days before passage (90-120oz of water) as dehydration can exacerbate symptoms. So far it seems to be getting better. Hope that helps! Thanks for your question!
