thanks a lot - I'm wrapping my first 2x12 guitar cabinet right now using your method and it's working well so far... 🙂 it went really well and I went on to build an entire new 1x15" guitar cabinet using your methods. jan '22, back to relearn how to do the corners for my second Corona-project 1x15" cabinet for a full stereo setup with matching cabs 😀

Found your video while searching for recovering a carrying case for a portable vintage sewing machine. The case is basically a wood box with a hinged lid with a handle on top. It’s covered inside and out with 75 year old tolex and needs to be redone. Your video will help a lot with me accomplishing my restoration process. Thank you.

Dude great video. One suggestion - the easiest way to cut the join so it meets and is straight is to glue an overlap then run your exacto through both layers then pull away the excess.

I followed these instructions almost to exactly and got flawless results on my 2x12. Some advice... 1. Use paper to practice the corners many times. I did this and felt absolutely confident when it came time to tolex. I even learned a better way to do the corners than what is show. In the video by practicing. The corners are seamless. 2. Definitely buy more adhesive than you think you'll need. I ran out of the Keyston adhesive used in this video half way and ended up using 3M Super 90 for the rest. The Keyston adhesive was much easier to work with. Although the Super 90 created a strong bond, areas where the adhesive was applied heavily tended to form bubbles that did not allow oxygen in. As a result, quarter-sized bubbles appeared under my tolex because the adhesive couldn't tack-up. If you do use Super 90, you can prevent this by bursting these bubbles after it is sprayed on (run your finger over the adhesive). It is messy. 3. Do not leave a significant excess of tolex for the width/sides. I did this and it made working the tolex very difficult mid way through the process. This became a significant problem when doing the seam. To avoid this, use tape and wrap it around the width of the box you are wrapping. Use the tape to know approximately the width you need to cut the tolex.

Very, very, VERY nice work. You are an artist. I have recovered amps and cases and you sure do make it look easy. One suggestion if I may, I use good old fashioned wax paper with painters tape to keep overspray problems in check. You can get a roll of it at the grocery store for next to nothing. I use the trick not with just adhesive but spraying furniture, crafts, etc. An old high school wood shop trick! I'm you're newest subscriber and really look forward to watching the rest of your videos.

Tip - This may sound silly but get a roll of masking tape and a large sheet of paper. Holiday wrapping works great. Wrap your case as though it were a present. Experiment with several sheets and your cuts and seams will become evident - probably not on your first try but you'll get there. Thanks for your question - hope this helps.

Hey Andy, Great video! I customize EVERYTHING. So this is very helpful. Dry mounting is the BEST way to go with Tolex. (I did not realize this until I watched this video). The heat gun is something that seems obvious, but I didn't use it the last time I customized my cab, nor did I top cut the seem. (seems,... I didn't have enough Tolex to properly cover my Marshall head. Had to piece it together,.. What a mess),.... Long/short of it, I'm redoing the Tolex on my cab and head and it will look sweet this time. Thanks! Wine Taurus cab and Head with LED lighting in the speaker chambers and the head,... The head has a piece of acrylic in place of the Marshall logo cover, and the back has a hinged trap door to access the inside of the head to change tubes.

Good and helpful video. Using spray adhesive is good on large surfaces but for the smaller areas (for example at 13minute in this video) to avoid overspray it's good to have some brushable adhesive (I use Pattex Palmatex).

I would like to see a video demonstrating who to apply Tolex to a cabinet which requires the use of two standard sized rolls. I recently covered a bass cab that was larger than one single roll of Tolex. I could have used some help on where to put the seam when the piece is too short to make it back to the bottom.

Hey Andy! Great stuff dude! Absolutely loving these videos, very nice explanations, easy to follow! I would love to see a video/ a short video series, on how to make a sound rack with removable front face and back panel! Hmm how can I explain what I want to see... Ahh!.. ..Build a flight case but with the inside dimensions suitable for Power Amplifiers, Graphic EQs, and of course those amazing sound effect processor units! Try making one that will fit 12u rack mounts? What do you think of this idea? I can't find many videos on how to make these so I have drawn up plans using your flight case series style design!
