Nice job troubleshooting, followed by repair, with tips along the way! I had a '74 Chevy Vega, parked outside in cold winter weather. Come morning it would crank but never start. Temperature warms up a bit later, it starts perfectly. Next night & morning, repeat. I finally discovered it had a 3-terminal oil pressure switch. Third terminal was wired to the electric fuel pump. When trying to start it super cold, the oil pressure was so low at the sensor it wouldn't pump any gas! Workaround: I put a shop light (incandescent bulb on a cord in a safety housing) against the block by the sending unit to keep it a bit warmer. Later on I replaced the sending unit, and also found out Chevy set it up this way so if you lost oil pressure it would kill the fuel supply, and prevent the total destruction of the aluminum block engine.

Going to date myself but I can remember when the first generation of computer controlled engines GM had a problem with sensors leaking and the weather pack connectors being so good they would fill the ECM with coolant,oil or gas depending on what sensor went bad. First time I had a customer complaint of oil dripping out from behind the glove box I thought I had heard it all and thought the customer was crazy. Sure enough the ECM was dripping oil and it was full of oil. Amazing how the oil would pump all the way to the ECM thru the wire alone.

I have a 98 F-150 with the same issue. The Oil Pressure would drop out and dance randomly. I had a long drive home and the pressure dropped to zero with an hour and a half to go. I made it home without any overheating, noise or rods coming through my oil pan, so I guessed it wasn't a pressure issue.

Thank You Kenny. I had the same problem with my 2001 F150. It was only 3 months old at the time and still under warranty. New sensor fix it and 305,000 miles later, still going strong. Much Love and Hugs

Another great video Kenny. Simple……but for those of us who are more tinkerers than mechanics it was very informative. Many of us go into panic mode when we see something that could destroy an engine very quickly (like loss of oil pressure or whatever else would be the worse case scenario with a check engine light) when in reality it is more likely to be something simple like a sensor of some type. Love your channel.

Ford uses "dummy" oil gauges. Ford was tired of listening to customers complaining about the oil pressure gauge fluctuating. So they used a oil light sensor plugged into the gauge on the instrument cluster. My Ford Crown Victoria P71 had this same issue. It wound up being a bad sending unit or sensor. What happens is moisture gets into the sensor which causes low or no oil pressure readings.

A leaking oil sending switch can really cause havoc at times. One of my memories is that of a 1960/1961 Chevrolet Corvair. Happened on route 80 and made it to an exit where I was lucky to find a parts store. The smoke was unbelievable. Good video Kenny.

You are able to tell it’s a Chevrolet pickup truck , typically the door hinge pin bushings are worn out and the striker plate becomes misaligned with the latch hence the door slamming .

A Ford 5.4 engine at first start up will run 90lbs of oil pressure until the oil gets really hot, after that it'll settle down between 18 to 25lbs pressure at idle, the factory phoney gauge only needs 4lbs of pressure to operate and show positive pressure

Personally, the first thing I would have done is check the oil level to see what's up. It obviously was an electric sensor issue & you were correct, but it would not have left without a new oil filter & new oil. I changed my oil sending unit on my '06 GTO four times in 7 years! They just crap out!

I had 3 cans of spray paint as standard in working on helicopters. First one was water displacement fluid, used on every part. Second was contact cleaner, used on connections. Third was matt black, used, with a piece of paper as mask, to touch up instrument panels. For corrosion control we used Tectyl, but the cans were not easy to get, but the 205l drums were all over, and if it would fit in the drum it would get dipped, then hung up over a galvanised steel pan, next to the drum, to drip dry. Larger in the pan and use a brush to cover it. I put entire instrument panels in that drum, then wiped them down to a clean surface, so that every pore was filled with anti corrosion compound, then would wire it up, put the gauges in, and put it back in service. Would not corrode then.

As I'm sure you know, that truck only has an oil pressure switch. If the pressure is about 7 psig or above, the gauge reads half scale.
@btwbrand
@btwbrand Жыл бұрын
aftermarket switches for these fords have a very high chance of failing internally and leaking through the electrical pin area. I've had it happen myself a few times. The pressure feeds into the sensor and leaks around the diaphragm for the sensor equalizing pressure across the internals and causing the sensor to read intermittently or not at all. This is one part I pay the 30$ for a motorcraft now.
@JRobert111111
@JRobert111111 Жыл бұрын
@William White You are absolutely correct! Ford did this as they had complaints of low oil pressure for decades, yes decades. To solve this, they went with a switch type sensor. The least amount of oil pressure sends the needle to its normal position regardless of the pressure. I'm glad someone else here can see the forest through the trees.

@@CodycoWeb I disagree with you. I have GM products from 1984 through 2006. All have an oil pressure gauge, and depending on engine temperature and speed, all gauges fluctuate all the time. None just go to one set place, every time, every temperature as Fords do.

I wish my car had bare bones basic generic problems. Uggg, my 99 Honda CR-V is an absolute horror show when dealing with repairs. Don't even ask about 5 different shops trying to sync the transmission shifter cable with neutral safety switch. Ammco transmission can't do and still charged $375. Basically held car hostage yesterday until I paid Even though not fixed. Even police called who shrugged and said civil matter & in order for me to get car back legally, I have to pay. Why can't there be a Kenny mechanic in every neighborhood. Boo hoo
