Hi,my 2011 volvo xc70 uses oil very strangely.It will be fine for a few weeks, then all of a it would be down two quarts ? I think it's going out the pvc system somehow.Just had to change my catalytic converter. I used an aftermarket one and the check engine light came on ? Reset light several times driveing a few hundred miles. I had to buy a volvo cat and it's fine now.Why would a aftermarket one not work ? 1200 dollars for the volvo one.

I have a quart of oil in my vehicle in case I need to top off and I keep it in a Ziploc bag so in case it leaks. I also keep the funnel in a Ziploc bag to keep it clean, even the one at my house because I just don't want any contaminants. My funnel is used only occasionally because I'm not a pro like yourself.

I keep a cloth in the engine bay, tucked up in a corner, so that I can check oil easily, plus it also helps when you need to open any cap, or wipe off your dirty hands in an emergency. Plus also keep a few small bottles of hand sanitiser as well, good emergency cleaning agent, and a pretty good cleaner as well. Keep the gel type, along with liquid, so you have a variety of uses for it.

I always roll the stick over to check both sides to see if they are at same level. Sometimes it picks up oil from the tube and gives a false read. I was curious so I did check my owners manuals to see if there was a difference (they do dictate how to checks levels). Nobody ever reads the Owners Manual of course .. lol. Anyway; 3 different engines ... a 4.7 H.O. in a Jeep, a 3.6 Pentastar in a Chrysler 300 and a 4.6 Northstar in a Caddy and they all basically say the same. And it is how I have always done it including the riding lawnmower .. "Check the oil level at regular intervals, such as every fuel stop. The best time to check the engine oil level is about five minutes after a fully warmed engine is shut off."

If you're in the habit of checking coolant at the radiator cap like that you can end up with an air leak on the outer seal. The way I prevent it is to take your fingernail and just lightly run it over the lip of the neck to get rid of any minute corrosion of other contamination then wipe it with a rag before you put the cap back on. I used to end up replacing the cap at stupidly frequent intervals until I started doing this.

Kenny why not put the funnel in a plastic bag and keep a shop rag in the engine bay?? As long as you are consistent in checking the oil, it doesn't matter. I prefer after the engine sits for 5-10 minutes.

When I get gas I check the oil. It takes a minute and it’s not hard to do. Warm or cold there’s a slight difference but if you’re down a quart add a quart. Better to check often until you can determine what is going on with your car rather than wait until the low oil pressure light comes on. Oil is still a bargain engine work is expensive!

The level was low on the second check because you didn't wait for the oil to drain down. There is no need to wait a long time, but 5 minutes isn't so long to wait to get a more accurate level.

@WrenchingWithKenny

Usually when it shows on one side, it is picking up the oil in the tube. If you're flipping it & it's still showing on the same side & not the opposite side then it sounds like you're not seeing the oil that's on the stick correctly. It's hard to answer without getting a visual. Are you low on oil & only seeing what is being collected in the tube? Sorry I couldn't help more. Thanks for watching the channel 🔧

It doesn't take that long for oil to drain back into the pan, in my experience doing oil services on thousands of vehicles if you're getting wildly different readings ice cold in the morning vs 30 seconds to a minute after shutdown your engine is probably sludged up severely.
