I am always amused when revisiting the Austin-Michaels program in 97. They did some face to face promos, where Shawn hilariously tried to 'out-tough' Steve Austin. Like Steve, Shawn takes to calling Austin 'son' - and he just looks and sounds like a boy in man's world.

As I got older, I started to appreciate Austin even more. Not only is he the biggest superstar of the 90s, but he also was one of the best pure wrestlers in the ring (The Attitude Era doesn't really reflect all of his in-ring capabilities imo). He really had it all and now I truly see why people argue for Austin being the GOAT. Not just as a talker or wrestler but the in the sense of being THE complete package.

I started watching the WWF when I was a kid in 1989. By 1993 I had stopped watching. Then one night in early 1997, just after WM13 actually, I was channel hopping and I flicked on to Sky Sports I think it was and the WWF was on. Steve Austin was talking in the ring. I thought sod it I’ll watch a bit of this. After a while I couldn’t believe what I was watching. I thought yeah this guy is worth watching. There was no more cartoon fools carrying bins to the ring. I started watching regularly after that. Because of Austin.

This whole storyline was one of the greatest one's told, including the inadvertent injury Stone Cold suffered from Owen Hart. That made his character even larger than life. Kudos to the WWF for not screwing it up. From then on, Vince was smart enough to push younger stars (The Rock, Edge & Christian, The Hardy's, etc.), to eventually beat Nitro & WCW in the ratings.

I always believed that if Shawn Michaels didn’t back out of the world title match with Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13, Stone Cold would have never gotten pushed to the main event spot, since it looked like Austin’s rise to the top really started at the submission match with Bret. I also think Bret leaving WWE after the Montreal screw job helped Austin out too since that left WWE short of main event wrestlers.

@1996lee14 жыл бұрын
Incognito ? I see your point but the only reason why I said that..because I’ve seen a lot of people talking about HBK and HHH using there backstage powers to hold the rock back even Bret Hart said in a interview they wanting him to buried the rock when he (Rock) was the IC champ in ‘97 Bret said he wouldn’t do it I believe its around that one match him and The Rock had I’m probably not quoting it right word for word but it’s a video on. Also I do think HHH would’ve became the star that he is just later on maybe around 2001-2003 time frame not 1999 if Shawn and Bret stayed around that long eventually WWE would have to create new stars HHH probably would’ve been Y2J in 2000 but just in a heel character but I could be completely wrong about that.......S/N: I didn’t even think about Undertaker so now if you think about 1998 time frame where HHH and The rock started to catch fire in upper mid-card but you still have HBK and Bret in the company would’ve been tough get in the main event picture with those two plus Austin and Undertaker at the top also
@incognito420.694 жыл бұрын
@@1996lee1 yeah i understand your point but look at CM Punk he had Vince Mcmahon saying he wouldn't push him but the people spoke and left them with no choice. End of the day its about money with all companies and they will do whatever makes them the most money. So with the people saying no to doing jobs it would end up how it always does, them out of the company and WWE making money with other people.

Thank you for detailing his match with Shawn at the KOTR '97. Will watch this soon. Where were the parents of the fan? The circumstances during Shawn vs Austin at WM XIV somewhat parallels the Curt vs Bret Summerslam IC match, except Curt was more professional about passing the torch despite his pain. Just opinion but their WM match is highly underrated. They still put on a very physically intense match that didn't disappoint. Tyson somewhat ruined the finish with that horrible fast count. Austin throwing the IC belt off the bridge- one of the best WTF moments!

Man, I really wish Montreal didn't happen. We were robbed of years of Austin/Hart feuds. I loved Austin/McMahon as much as the next guy, but I can honestly say I would have liked years of Austin and Hart going at it much more.
