The nWo stable and storyline had been incredibly succesful for WCW during the mid 90s. Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan changed the wrestling world by forming a heel group that would attempt to take over World Championship Wrestling, resulting in WCW defeating the WWF in the weekly television ratings. All good things must come to an end though, and by early to mid 1999, the nWo had drifted apart.
When Vince Russo joined WCW as head of creative, he wanted to bring Bret Hart back into main event scene. Bret had been misused in WCW since his debut, and Russo saw the potential in raising Hart up to a spot that Russo felt Bret truly deserved. Within a month or so of Russo writing television, Bret was given the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. A month later, after a well documented match with Bill Goldberg at Starrcade 1999, Bret Hart turned heel, reviving the New World Order name in the process. This new version of the heel stable, known as nWo 2000, would also include The Outsiders, Jeff Jarrett, Scott Steiner and eventually The Harris Brothers.
This video looks at the creation of nWo 2000, the groups brief run in WCW, and how it all fell apart within mere months. Topics include:
00:00 - The overexposure of the nWo
02:11 - Vince Russo pushes Bret Hart in WCW
05:48 - Seeds are planted for nWo 2000's formation
08:22 - nWo 2000 is formed after Starrcade 1999
12:42 - The immediate issues with a new nWo
15:24 - nWo 2000 already begins breaking down
18:00 - Bret Hart and Jeff Jarrett miss Souled Out 2000
- Much More!

If there's one thing I'll always respect Russo for, it's that when he jumped on board, he wanted to make Bret Hart the main event superstar that he should've been the moment he walked through the doors of WCW. All of a sudden, he's WCW Champion, as he should be.

WCW very much squandered Bret Hart early on. Bret had automatic sympathy due to the Montreal Screwjob and everything that had happened there. He should have been a main event player in WCW almost from the beginning. Especially considering what they were paying him (reportedly just shy of 3 million a year)

It's crazy the types of things that these guys would wrestle through... if Bret suffered that sort of concussion today he'd most likely be out for a year or more at least. Back in 99 they just kept throwing him back in there night after night (including in a hardcore match!!) Honestly, I didn't even realize he kept wrestling after that kick until I watched a video of yours a few months back.

Loved the video! Was a big WCW fan as a kid. The thing that they did wrong was put too many big powerhouse stars in the NWO. I think they should have never added in Luger, Macho Man, The Giant. Those 3 guys should have always been the opposition and possibly aligned with Sting as their own faction. The Giant being the only one that I would be fine with turning. Also making Mr Perfect in the NWO seemed like a waste as he could have been positioned as a top guy during those later WCW years.

@@planescaped There are still promising north-american promotions out there. NWA for old-school show wrestling fans has for a while now CWfH and actual with UWN two nice products. MLW will be back soon and then there are good smaller promotions like GCW (Game Changer Wrestling) which is a very versatile promotion, creating constant new stars and cooperating with many other promotions like WWE, AEW, Impact!, ROH, NJPW and many smaller ones. Take a look at the GCW - Collective Weekend (here a highlight video from one of the twelve shows which were held on that Collective Weekend: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHOmoX1_qrODd6M ), which was two weeks ago something like the independent version of Wrestlemania or so. It seems to me that alot of people often miss the point of the nWo when it comes to them being bloated beyond the initial three. The mistake that people make, as I see it, is that they see the nWo as just another stable like the four horsemen which is meant to be guys that watch eathothers backs to get the wins. But the nWo isn't that. The nWo was a takeover. It made it a real menace that they were constantly growning in number. WCW guys constantly defecting to join these cool guys instead. It didn't matter taht there were lousy members in it too (Vincent, Bryan Adams...) because they made the group look bigger and you could job them out without sacrificing Hall, Nash, and Hogan. It was worth it if they allowed the nWo to have a storyline end. Where WCW survives these invaders that caused an insurrection. At least, that's how i saw the nWo watching at the time in the 90's

For that infamous thunder promo, I always wondered if Scott Hall was drunk or if he was just rebelling against what Russo had written down. He’s mentioned in shoot interviews that he was never a fan of Russo and would go off script with what was written down

On that same token wrestlers like Rude, Nash, Hall, & Steiner wanted 2 replace legends like Flair, Hogan, & Hart, but the storylines weren't as good & fans wasn't ready 2 let go. Flair & Hogan mastered all aspects of wrestling & Bret was easily likeable. Nash was pure boring as the top guy. Steiner chance just came 2 late.

Never thought i'd see the day where in 2020 it would take both a Raw and Smackdown combined to match a Vince Russo Nitro rating. Heck Raw and Smackdown these days don't even do a Vince Russo TNA rating.

One of the funniest parts of this storyline actually happens when Bret is "attacked" backstage. The camera crew and Mike Tenay rush into the room but Goldberg is already there. He tries to hide behind the door but his big, tattooed arm is very clearly sticking out. Then he rushes in like he just got there. It's a huge botch by production but from a storyline aspect, it accidentally made Bill look suspicious in retrospect.
