The Story of Goldberg in WWE

In the last video, we looked at Goldberg's run in WCW, and how, thanks to how he was booked, Goldberg was able to stand out in a sea of older superstars. Goldberg's run in WCW, no matter what you may think of his wrestling skills, was a success. Now we will see if that WCW success transferred over to THE WWE.
In this mini documentary from Wrestling Bios, we follow up on the previous "Story of Goldberg in WCW" video as we look at The Story of Goldberg in the WWE. We look at the Goldberg WWE debut in 2003, his match against The Rock at Backlash 2003, the Goldberg vs Triple H feud and the politics that game along with his, the questionable Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar match at WrestleMania 20, Goldberg's return to the WWE and reigniting his feud with Brock Lesnar, and the mess of a match that occured at WWE Super Showdown when WWE decided to book Goldberg vs Undertaker in 2019.
If you want to gain a better understanding of Goldberg's time in WCW, make sure to watch the previous video I uploaded.

Honestly in Goldberg's first run if he would have went to smackdown he would have had a lot better career instead of being on raw were you had triple h just burying everyone especially the wcw guys

Agree. When Goldberg was on Raw in 03 the only matches that stuck out at all were his matches with The Rock and Chris Jericho. I could have seen him having a good feud with Shawn Michaels on Raw in 03 maybe at like SummerSlam. I would have liked to have seen Goldberg be on Sd in 03 cause he could have had dope feud with Kurt Angle at Survivor series, maybe a better match with Lesnar at like Royal Rumble and then do Taker/Goldberg at WM 20.

I actually think both of Bill's runs in the WWE were pretty good ... The first time around he was never going to be allowed to dominate with HHH still doing his thing, but he got some impressive moments to shine, and spearing Rosey through the barrier still remains a personal favourite moment. His second run was cool because it seemed to make Bill happy personally ... It banished some demons, and apart from that recent mess with Undertaker, brought his career to a deserved happy ending. As a kid I was only a WWF fan ... but I'll never forget the first time I saw Goldberg emerge to that epic music at the end of a Nitro episode a friend let me borrow ... He was the most menacing and powerful Wrestler I'd ever seen! Prime Goldberg made you believe in the 'unstoppable monster' gimmick.

Some important info about Goldberg's WWE run that isn't well known. I got my info from Rob Donaghy from the Bill Goldberg Forums back in the day; Bob (of MMA fame) would frequent the forums back then and give us the inside scoop. I can confirm the identity of Bob on the Goldberg forums due to a request I made that got back to Bill in which he did something special for me live on air in the WWE. But no matter, you can believe what I say or not because I'm just another guy on the internet making an unsubstantiated claim, and that's fine with me. Goldberg's WWE contract wasn't just for a year; it was for a year and a specific number of dates/matches. The WWE used up all of Goldberg's appearances before the WMXX match with Lesnar and therefore he wasn't on air to hype up the event. The WWE ended up using Stone Cold to do all the hype on air in place of Goldberg. Speaking of that match, Goldberg was impressed by Lesner's size and in-ring presence, so much so that Bill *wanted* to lose cleanly to Brock at WMXX. Bill thought Brock's character would be exactly the type that could take out his cleanly. Bill also wanted to "pass the torch" because he wasn't sure if he was going to continue wrestling after his contact was up. However, when Brock announced he was leaving for the NFL, Vince changed the ending of the match out of spite. Lastly, in general, Goldberg's first run in the WWE was a major disappointment not only to himself but the fans. They weren't just booing him out of WWE loyalty (though it certainly was at play), but because WWE watered down Goldberg's character when he was known for being so dominant in the WCW. When Bill convinced the McMahon's to let him be like his character during the SummerSlam 2003 match, and it was Bill's idea to lose to HHH because everyone would expect him to win, and it would clear the way for a one on one with HHH later. Oh, and Bill has always been an introvert. It's not that he didn't get along with the other wrestlers, he just preferred to keep to himself.

It broke my heart that the crowd booed Goldberg and Lesnar because they were leaving the company. I hate that wrestling fans feel that wrestlers aren't allowed to leave or try other things, like the wrestlers somehow belong to them. These guys beat their bodies up for our entertainment and should be able to do other things and take breaks as much as they want. Imagine the world turning on you because you left Home Depot to work at Sears because it was higher pay and an easier schedule. I liked the match even though it wasn't the best, but I can't blame Goldberg and Lesnar for not having the heart to do better after the crowd turned on them on a personal level, not just kayfabe booing.
@faz6877
@faz6877 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah but you can't compare working at Home Depot to working in the entertainment industry like the WWE. I certainly don't blame a professional for not wanting to be on the road anymore and just relax. But that WM crowd is pretty hardcore. As professionals they should have been able to put on a halfway decent match. They get paid millions of dollars. They should be able to take a little booing on the biggest show of the year. It's just how it goes in entertainment. Athletes get booed when they change teams. It's just part of it. After the match they put on I was happy Stone Cold gave them both stunners.

Taker vs Goldberg or even stone cold vs Goldberg were dream matches back in the late 90s or early 2000s but father time catches everyone both Goldberg and Taker were upset at that performance can't blame them especially knowing what they had once done but sadly they are just not as young as they use to be and can't quite go like they use to but honestly if anyone hates either of them for a match at the end of thier careers isn't a true fan of either as both arguably had a big influence during the Monday night wars and should be remembered and respected for that

@trendmassacre8423
@trendmassacre8423 4 жыл бұрын
The fans being the #1 reason, because most WWE fans are first class retards! They are quick to point out the botches of the older generation wrestlers, but turn their heads of the younger generation! If you are going to point out one persons botches and suggest they retire, then you better point out EVERYONE elses botches and also suggest they retire! WWE fans are the perfect definition of the word "Tool" and are also the reason why I have a hard time watching Raw or Smackdown! One example: When Paul Heyman comes out and says who he is, then 15,000 other Paul Heymans come out of the wood work and admit that they share the same name!

I would say that even his WM33 loss wasn't perfectly clean as he had a shoulder injury going into the match and knocked himself silly twice in the match (hitting his head on the barricade when he speared Brock through it, and again hitting his head on the top turnbuckle when Brock moved out of the way of a spear). Not to mention he was 15 years past his prime. So all in all, I don't count it as an absolutely clean loss.

I remember when goldberg tried to jackhammer a wrestler but he was sooo big that goldberg had trouble getting him up... He lifted the guy up near the corner ropes and couldn't get him up so the guy, while in the jackhammer hold, fell down on his feet at the corner top ropes and kept trying to kick his body weight off of the corner rope, to try and help goldberg get him up... He tried springing himself in the air like 5 or 6 times lol

One of the more unfortunate things about wrestling is how bare the backstage stuff is. 2006-2014 I looked back on Goldberg decently, not one of the greats, but a cool concept for someone who wasn't as gifted. Then I would see interviews where he says he didn't feel like learning the product coming out of the NFL...like fine you don't care much for the product, but if you're going to do a job put in a bit of effort. At least Lesnar's got a background of incredible training with OVW and his run from 2002-2004, like at least as a part time spectacle you know he was in the trenches for a time. It's both frustrating, but at the same time admirable looking at him now. Yeah he was lazy about learning to be a decent wrestler...yet his presence and starpower despite that is impressive, you just wish he was the complete package

I’m a massive casual and mostly watched wrestling in the early 90’s. I’d never seen or heard of Goldberg before his entry to wwe. However I found him to lack any actual wrestling ability and was instantly turned off to the character. Really liked you’re WCW video as it explained my assumptions where true but they booked him as so. Sadly when you hit the “top” you need all the tools in the box

Goldberg brang me back to watching wrestling in 1997. Wcw was the better show for me back then, non the less wwe wanted to destroy any wcw star that went to wwe. Booker t, sting, scott stiener they all got fed to triple h to destroy. But with goldberg they did it differently. Humliated him in the chamber yeah you know which bit im talking about the handcuffs etc.

LycanVonWolf what do you mean. why not just keep having him destroy everyone in two minutes for his whole career and have a never ending streak because he's unstoppable. everyone knew he was unstoppable and destroyed everyone quik, and everyone liked it, nobody was complaining. so why change his character? I think andre the Giant went undefeated for like 15 years.

@@michaelscofield31 his contract was only for a year, so they are supposed to just book him to look great and don't use him to bring up other stars when he leaves? So then he leaves and they get nothing out of it

@@c-portraider7411 so you hire him to have him job to your up-and-coming talent? That's not a very good use of him either. BTW, if done right, they could have booked Bill to be a monster until the end of his contact where he's finally defeated cleanly. Win/win for both parties. And that's what was supposed to happen.

I respect Undertaker as a wrestler but it's quite evident that he didn't jump for the jackhammer when Goldberg tried to lift him and the worst part is undertaker gave tombstone to Goldberg on his head and Goldberg was totally done for after that, his neck almost cracked it felt, but still he tried to finish the match and kept going I commend him for his spirit, so please stop blaming Goldberg try to analyze the match from a neutral perspective!!
