Wrestlemania 14 was the conclusion of a story that started in Royal Rumble '96, and this story primarily followed 3 people, firstly HBK, detailing his rise and fall, Bret, and what he became, which eventually lead to his demise, and Austin, who albeit joined the narrative later, towards the end of '96, his rivalry with Bret, and then later Shawn. That triangle of stories (with the Undertaker thrown in the mix here and there) between these 3 was, to me, the greatest time I had watching WWF.

Just as an aside to the wars aspect of this PPV. Kevin Nash has said he knew it was the beginning of the end for WCW when he saw the production quality of Mania 14. Supposedly he was talking to Kevin Sullivan the next day and Nash quoted Sullivan as saying “You feel that? The ship just hit the iceberg”
@xxxaragon2 жыл бұрын
not that this is a new thought (because a lot of people other than me have stated this, even back then) but what was so signficant about Mania XIV was the whole FEEL. especially, and I'm pretty sure Nash was having that in mind as well, compared to +their+ biggest shows of the years, just few months earlier. Starrcade 1997. while the matches at Starrcade were a bit worse, what's even more relevant was the whole booking of it. it's the big blowoff show - and yet for the majority of it, it's business as usual as the heels win. and even the main event, with the super babyface returning to finally beat the villain ended with some kind of wonky interference etc. in contrast, Austin going over Michaels was booked pretty much exactly the way it needed to be to gain most out of it (and so was at least the majority of the rest of the show). (to demonstrate this in numbers, both Mania and Starrcade hat 8 matches. at Starrcade, the heels won 5 of them and the faces 3. at Mania, the heels won 2 and the faces 6 matches. the latter was basically designed to be pretty much a "feelgood" show. people in charge of the WCW at that time didn't realize that ideally, blowoffs to your biggest feuds involving your biggest babyface stars end with the face going over decisively!)

This is my favourite Wrestlemania of all time. It's not the biggest show, it doesn't have an all time classic match, or an epic theme song to accompany the video packages. But, it didn't need any of that. Everything on this show delivered in exactly the way it needed to. The build-up to this show was top notch, the atmosphere, the pomp and pageantry, the matches themselves, the way that everything gave you answers, but still made you ask more questions and gave you something to look forward to. Then there's the epilogue. The transition from the New Generation Era into the Attitude Era was completed on this night, and what followed, is three of the most exciting and insane years in the history of the WWF/E. It's such a grand spectacle, a wild ride from start to finish. From the joy of L.O.D.'s return, to the high flying of Taka Vs. Aguila, to the animosity between Owen and HHH, to the drama of the mixed tag, to Shamrock's domination, to the insanity of the dumpster match, to the epic showdown between Taker and Kane, to HBK's courage and Steve Austin's crowning moment. Wrestlemania XIV isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I absolutely love this show.

2 issues I have with this WrestleMania.... - Sable getting over on Luna. The disrespect. Luna could actually wrestle. And the disrespect WWF showed her after the match by cheering for Sable and giving her flowers. Luna was so heartbroken. And it was nice of Owen Hart to come up to her and tell her she did a good job. And now Sable may get inducted into the main HOF all while Luna is already inducted into the 2019 WWE Legacy Wing. I mean, even in her death WWE still disrespects her. - Owen Hart should've won that match against Triple H. But I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled backstage politics to keep the belt.

I started watching this series right before Halloween of 2023, and I'm enjoying a show each and every evening. This brings back such great memories, I grew up in the Aiken/Augusta area, and professional wrestling was a big deal in that area at the time. As I grew older it fell out of favor for me, then when I moved to Annapolis, MD in 1988, it returned in a big way as three friends of mine included me in their weekly trips to wrestling venues all over the east coast. Thank you for the great memories that are coming back with each episode, the best way I could think to express my gratitude was to order a few t-shirts, which I did earlier today and I look forward to being a walking build-board for this channel!

The way they booked Owen. Only gets worse from here.

It was so obvious that backstage politics were playing a massive part in how he was booked given Triple H never put him over and Shawn only had one match against him after Montreal. If he had been booked better and without backstage politics going on he'd likely still be alive as he wouldn't of been given the blue blazer gimmick

This was and remains one of the best Wrestlemania's. All the matches had a reason to be on the card, all the storylines were developed, and there wasn't a boring match on the card.

Hey I still get goosebumps every time I hear that old school wrestlemania theme at the beginning it takes me back to my childhood man I miss those days who else remembers the 90s and their teens when all this was happening good times

So much nostalgia for WM14 and one of my all time favorite. This was the first PPV I watched live and it pushed my Fandom into the stratosphere. The dumpster match is still great, and Stone Cold winning his first word title is incredible.

The ending sequence during the Austin/HBK is still one of my favorite endings of all-time. Very well done. I've always wondered if Shawn chose to go home early, due to the pain he was in, because the show seemed to end about 10-15 minutes early.

Either that or time was needed for the post-match ending. WCW HH 1998 showed us how key time management is for a show.

Props to triple h for stellar backstage politicking getting over on Owen. Set the trend for usurping more talented guys than him for years to come. Play the game!

I often wish that Owen had been more aggressive in his approach backstage, but he was the most laid back person in the business. He also had one foot out the door here. He was planning to retire by 2000 to become a firefighter in Calgary.

The Undertaker / Kane match was particularly great live/@ the time. As he points out, it was exciting seeing taker trying new things out of his comfort zone, + the false finishes actually served their purpose, as you have to remember this was pre steak, way before it was a foregone conclusion that he was going to win every match at mania. I don't think anyone even put together that there was a streak happening till a couple years after this & they certainly didn't make mention of it till I want to say X8...

Triple H and Owen Hart were both so painfully underrated! They could've been the headliners with them being told to set the match up themselves without the higher ups getting involved and it'd have been awesome! Owen should've had several reigns as champ by the time he passed!!!!!
