When it comes to the very best Royal Rumble match in WWF / WWE history, many will say that nothing is better than the 1992 edition of the famous showdown between 30 superstars. With the WWF championship on the line, the top stars of the World Wrestling Federation met in the ring on the 19th of January 1992 in what many consider the true “greatest” Royal Rumble of all time.
After Ric Flair had got involved in Hulk Hogan’s WWF championship matches at Survivor Series 1991 and This Tuesday in Texas, the WWF championship was vacated. WWF President Jack Tunney announced that the winner of the 1992 Royal Rumble would also become the new undisputed WWF Champion, so there was a lot at stake in the rumble match. Along with Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan, the 1992 Royal Rumble was truly star-studded… the match also featured guys like Roddy Piper, Macho Man Randy Savage, Sid Justice, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, Kerry Von Erich and loads more. This video looks at the entire Royal Rumble match along with the famous promo afterwards delivered by “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair.
00:00 - The Build-up to Royal Rumble 1992
03:48 - The Pre Match Promos
07:51 - The 1992 Royal Rumble match
17:40 - Sid, Hogan and Flair finish the Royal Rumble
19:06 - "With a tear in my eye"
21:17 - Why the 1992 Rumble was so good
- Much More!

What's GENIUS about Heeenan's commentary is, not only is he putting over Flair, but every time he sounds scared when other wrestlers either come down and/or attack Flair, its also putting over that particular wrestler as well. Just so genius. RIP Bobby Heenan

Well of course. Heenan understood that if your opposition never looks credible, you don't either. Flair didn't outlast 29 jobbers, he outlasted the best 29 other guys in the company and came out on top.

This is easily the best RR of all time for a myriad of reasons. Heenan and Monsoon on commentary. Classic wrestlers and at least a dozen of them could have viably been the new champion. Having Flair at #3 win it all is so much of a good business move. Seen it at least 1/2 dozen times and never get tired of these moments.

Kind of reminds me of WW3 1995 in WCW. Giant pulls Hogan from under the rope, which the ref doesn't see. Then the ref see's Hogan outside the ring and eliminates him giving Macho Man the victory and the WCW Heavyweight Championship. Hogan then gets in the ring and has a tantrum and demands a title shot while the crowd all boo him.

@@michaelmadden8269 It was the best decision, as Ted DiBiase was already an emphasized heel coming in at #1 from a previous RR. This way it was more of a surprise and Flair still competed for over 60 mins. It wasn't overdone either, just have big odds against Flair to beat. If Flair was #1 and threw people left, right and center, through the entire hour, it would be excessive and not enjoyable. I think Royal Rumble 92 was perfect.

Not nearly enough credit goes to Monsoon. Go back and watch it as an adult and pay attention to the subtle ways that Monsoon sets up Heenan for many of his lines. Everytime I listen to him now I'm more amazed by how subtly he guides the commentary whether it's Piper, Heenan, Neidhart, or even Vince himself.

One of the things that makes its so great is that you have so many guys in there that had great feuds over the years with Ric Flair. You've got Greg Vantetine, Roddy Pipper and Kerry Von Erich to start. It was like watching a whole history of Flair's career coming back to haunt him.

Big difference between this and modern Rumbles, everyone has a story and those stories are woven into the match. Made everything seem more important in my opinion. Modern Rumbles just have a guy come in, run wild for 30 seconds, get cut off, and then everyone lies around again. RIP Pat Patterson

LoL, yeah that was hilarious, I remember Heenan saying that. I think there was another moment during that rumble bobby was said : "Weasel your way out of there" (he wanted Flair to just get out of the ring away from the action) Gorilla Monsoon said: "Weasel your way out of there? He was surprised Heenan would use those words because that's what everyone called Heenan.

This was definitely the greatest Royal Rumble of all time, and I'd argue that it's probably the greatest match of all time. As you mentioned, so many stories intersected and converged that night and it's amazing how deep the roster was in 91-92. Also, it's an interesting and awkward time to see Hogan start to lose his stranglehold on the card. Great video!

Ric Flair stayed true to the whole old wrestling ethos throughout this Royal Rumble - he earnt the win throughout the whole match. Hogan showboating at the end just showed how hollow 'Hulkomania' was by the tail end of his first time with then WWF. Great summary of an epic and titanic battle. So glad the whole match is available to see on WWE's YT channel.

The greatest show I had the honor of attending live. Even without Heenan's five-star commentary, it was heart-in-your-throat excitement. To craft an hour match that never loses the plot and keeps the audience frantic the entire time was no mean feet. I assume much of the structure came from Patterson. And man, did that building come unglued when Flair won it. As we all filed out of the arena that afternoon, every stairwell and corridor was filled with people going "whooooo!!"

Very good piece and I'm in total agreement, particularly on the commentary's part in it. There's a moment where Flair is on offense despite having taken a real beating late in the match, and Heenan says something like: "Look at that Monsoon - I told you, the man's a champion" and Monsoon says "Well he's proving that to me Brain". And for me, those moments where they break the 'cheer-the-face-boo-the-heel' dynamic you usually have in commentary are what are priceless and feel honest.
