Very amusing how WCW & WWF both had "mystery assailant" storylines at the same time that were never truly, 100% answered. WCW had "Who drove the White Hummer?!" & WWF had "Who pulled up the briefcase at KOTR '99?!", and while both had likely answers (Hulk Hogan & Big Boss Man, respectively) neither promotion ever bit the bullet & gave a definitive finale. Just such a weird thing to do from both sides.

They were really trying to make Billy Gunn into a big star at this time. I remember the build to the KOTR tournament on how they were talking about how important winning KOTR was often showcasing Austin's '96 KOTR win as an example. Billy Gunn's push however went nowhere. Fully agree a KOTR win for Chyna would have been a great launching pad for her as a singles performer in men’s competition. I am glad Chyna still got her singles push and ended up winning the IC title twice. As for Billy Gunn I think he was the type of mid card talent that could have benefited from a KOTR win. But it didn’t really make much of a difference for Billy Gunn who was never able to get past credible mid card status as a singles performer. I still wish they never got rid of the KOTR tournament. It was always a good launching pad for mid card talent. Although there were a few duds (Mabel, Ken Shamrock and Billy Gunn) but the following 3 KOTR winners were Kurt Angle, Edge and Brock Lesnar all three were helped by winning the KOTR. The previous two winners in 1997 and 1996 were HHH and Austin both benefited from the win.

He was 'fired' from the Corporate Ministry after he lost to Austin the week before KOTR so he wasn't officially part of the stable anymore and therefore could get involved in the match as it wasn't against the rules. He returned on RAW the night after the pay-per-view with his old theme and everyone thought he'd turned face and gone old school.
