What happened when a WCW match took place on WWF Raw is War?
After Vince McMahon purchased WCW he initially had the idea of letting WCW continue on as it's own separate entity. It was reported that WCW Monday Nitro would continue airing on Monday nights while WWF Raw could potentially move to a different night. In order to test things out, a WCW match took place on Raw - Booker T vs Buff Bagwell - and the match was met was a negative crowd response.
Buff Bagwell thought the match should've taken place the next week when Raw was in Atlanta, however other reports state that Buff Bagwell wasn't the easiest guy to get along with backstage and this match was always destined to fail. Bagwell also explained that he was limited in what he could do during the match due to orders received from Shane McMahon moments before entering the ring.
This video looks at the WCW match that happened on Raw is War just before during the WCW Invasion storyline.

This is definitely a case of the crowd turning against the match due to brand loyalty. They completely sabotaged this match that had nothing wrong with it really.
@kyleolson8977

I was in the crowd. There was nothing particularly magical about the brand loyalty. It was not-really WCW with one person who was a star too late and one person who was mid-card and had lost his wrestling skill due to injury. The match did not fit into Raw. It might as well have been a 205 Live match as a main event.

I think that was obviously part of it as honestly if WCW won bought WWF and they had two WWF guys appear on Nitro the same thing would have happened. However it probably would have helped if they sent bigger stars if for example they sent a Goldberg,Flair,Sting,Hogan or Outsiders it would have gotten a decent to good reaction.

There was plenty of BS to go around when WWE took over. It's totally within Vince's nature to bury WCW for rivaling him for years. The irony is that without WCW, WWE may have failed. WCW forced WWE to be better.

What hurt most about the Invasion Storyline is that most of WCWs top stars appeared after this storyline ended. Ric Flair appeared literally the night after. The NWO appeared almost three months after Flair appeared. Bischoff came in the Summer of 2002 (months after). Scott Steiner appeared in November that same year, and Goldberg appeared the night after WrestleMania 19 in 2003. Had WWE been patient, they would've had the stars they wanted, but here we are talking about what could've been.
@eddiew.4650
@eddiew.4650 Жыл бұрын
Actually we could've gotten Vince vs Bischoff during the invasion since Eric didn't have a Turner contract like NWO, Flair, Steiner ect. Also keep in mind that you can't really expect WCW talent to just sit at home for a year and wait until the other guys show up. You can only go so far without getting a paycheck, and I doubt Vince would be paying them to sit around and do nothing.

Vinces ego would have killed it anyway even if they had waited for Mania 18. No way would the legitimate WCW superstars have gone over the WWF (called at the time) guys. Look how Steiner, Goldberg (1st run) all turned out. The only way it would have been half decent was if Vince gave creative control to Paul Heymen or Eric Bischoff to book it. Was never gonna happen.

In one of Jericho's books, he said that it should have been Booker T vs. Lance Storm, then it would have been better received to the audience. Bagwell was charismatic but was an average worker at best. Also, considering the interference by Buff's mother, he was a goner from day one.

Man... They really rushed the invasion storyline. They could've fed the WCW stars that were available to them at the time SLOWLY, and waited until the next year for their major stars to invade. Such a shame no one knew how any big wCw names were coming to the WWE in 2002. If this was known - that the nWo, Steiner - I imagine even Goldberg might’ve shown up a few months earlier had everything been going swimmingly - had the WWE spent 2001 slowly introducing these mid card wCw guys - Booker T, Buff Bagwell, DDP, Bischoff etc (mid card as in even though they were wCw main eventers beforehand, they had no real credibility on arrival at WWE) - then done the invasion angle with the nWo as the team leaders, and each week the lower rated wCw guys who’d shown up in 2001 would turn nWo-style to the invading side until maybe just DDP and Booker remained loyal to WWE - that could’ve been one hell of a story for that year. I mean obviously hindsight is a great thing, and I remember in that year reading that those bigger names were happy just getting paid for seeing out their contracts, but this invasion could’ve been awesome had it had the groundwork laid in 2001 then erupted through the nWo in 2002.

Yeah, I was going to bring this up, too. No one seems to bat an eye at how Sugar Shane Helms was the Cruiserweight Champion come the final Nitro, yet Billy Kidman was the champion going into the Invasion PPV, and it's because Kidman won the title on that Smackdown match. However, this video establishing that Helms was injured would likely explain why he dropped the title to Kidman, as otherwise he might have been the one to fight X-Pac at Invasion, since he was so well liked after the Buff incident.

This match hurt the brand's chances a lot, but the other nail in the coffin was that no TV network was willing to take a chance on anything called "WCW" after the previous two years of the product had seen high expenses and sagging ratings. When Jamie Kellner canceled Nitro, Thunder, and all the rest, he made WCW worthless to everyone but Vince. A great showing from this segment might have provided a glimmer of hope, but salvaging WCW would have been a long uphill climb.

I think with any of these invasion storylines, one of the biggest issue is there is never clearly defined stakes behind what is happening. With the NWO it was “oh no they’ll destroy WCW as it previously existed”. It then………..proceeded to do exactly that as 80% of the roster joined the NWO, prior strong factions were dismantled, and the heel faction never suffered more than a momentary loss in 3-4 years. By 1999 there was nothing left to have a rooting interest in to cheer against the NWO. With WWE owned “WCW”, the only way this ever could have worked is if the faction was both booked strong and gave fans enough of a rooting interest to cheer for. There would have to be stakes to WCW continuing to exist and some promise of consequences if they were successful. Ideally you’d want fans to get behind the faction, even if they were ultimately unsuccessful. Nobody at WWE proper wanted to even pretend WCW was a legitimate threat anymore, even though Vince has already clearly won the war. So even for storyline purposes WCW was never booked as a real, still existing faction. It was just mid card guys hogging airtime (even though Booker T was much more at this point), so of course fans weren’t going to be happy. Vince’s immediate 180 shouldn’t be surprising, given that he never seemed that interesting in selling this in the first place

I think this "Raw would have become WCW Nitro" thing is a complete myth. Vince's ego wouldn't have allowed that to happen, and even if it did, Spike would have put the kibosh on it. Along with having the first WCW match on RAW take place in Atlanta first before having it in other towns, the WWF could also have done a cruiserweight match instead, which was one of WCW's many TV staples. They may not have had Rey Mysterio yet, but you did have Shane Helms, Kidman, Chavo Guerrero Jr. and some other cruiserweights that came over after the buyout. Perhaps Billy Kidman vs. Shane Helms replaces Bagwell vs. Booker T. in that match.
