I felt bad for Animal that day. Not only was Hawk messed up to the point he could barely compete, he had to deal with a ventriloquist dummy, AND he also burned his leg on his motorcycle pipe because Hawk was so messed up he couldn't park it right. Animals tights were burned to his leg for the whole match. It was a hell of a night for Animal.

I'll never forget this pay-per-view. I was stoked as Hell about it and it was all I could think about. Then I went to the park down the road to play with some friends. Some bullies showed up and decided to break my arm in 2 places. I clearly remember my dad coming to the Hospital and I told him to go home and make sure we had the VCR set up to record SummerSlam and after I they put me under to set my arm and put it in a cast the first thing I asked when I woke up was "Did I miss SummerSlam?" Luckily my dad did go back home and set everything up and the next day, broken arm and all doped up, I watched this and was so excited I forgot all about my arm for those few hours.

Said it on the best of list, but I'll say it here too: the fact that Davey Boy was so coked up for that match that Bret had to scrap the layout of it and do the whole thing as audibles is just wild. The fact that Davey Boy not only trusted Bret enough to do that, but was still so good himself that he never really missed a cue or blew a spot is otherworldly. These two really were among the best of the world at that time, and this match (even without the backstory) is a testament to how great they really were. With the backstory, this match moves up from not just one of the best of all time, but into something of a minor miracle!

I feel like the WWE and WCW just kept hiring big guys, whether buff or just fat, for the sake of it only to have them trundle around like boulders in the ring. But I think Tenta could really work; he was surprisingly fast, and had a very good basic technique when it came to big moves and selling etc.

Before this match I was just a casual fan. Probably too little, being only seven to really pay that much attention. But this was the first ppv event I saw. A friend had a recording of the ppv on vhs. And even though bulldog won, I became a huge Hitman fan after this. Leading up to a couple years later with the split finish at RR94 and Mania 10. Which are still the two most iconic wrestling ppv to me personally. I want to to say thanks to Brian because I haven't been an active wrestling fan since 99ish but got laid off during quarantine and have really enjoyed going down a rabbit hole of nostalgia. It has been a light in the dark times. I hope you are able to find something that gives you a light like that as you deal with the loss of your mother. I can't imagine what that is like and I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm sure she knew that you gave a lot of people joy and happiness through your work, and I don't doubt for a second how proud she must have been of her son. Idk you, but I'm just guessing. Thanks for everything you do and I hope you have a light in the darkness.

Well they'd toured over here a few times, most notably in 1989 and at the end of 1991 ( when they did the Royal Albert Hall show) but this was the biggest thing they'd ever done away from North America and the promotion was huge. I was only approaching 8 years old in the Summer of 1992 but I can still remember quite clearly the heavy coverage that The Sun newspaper gave the WWF in the buildup - obviously paid for though. They did a pretty cool pull out or poster of the match card that I kept for a few years and that I'm now gonna go try find it online

Thing with Virgil is, a year isn't really a long time when you're coming off being the protagonist in a genuinely emotional storyline. Everybody brought their A game in the story with DiBiase, including Virgil, for that one story he was very well liked and over. They just never did anything else with him after, became an enhancement talent for the new guy getting pushed.

The kicks Bret hit Bulldog with at 24:47 were actually recently revealed to be actual shoot kicks from Bret. During the FS-1 watch-along a couple of weeks ago, Bret told Booker, Renee, & Punk that he legit stiffed Davey with those kicks in an attempt to wake his brother-in-law up & get him out of his crack-induced stupor. That's why you see Davey reacting the way he does to those kicks; he wasn't selling, he was actually in pain! I can only imagine the conversation the two had about those kicks... "Bret, those kicks you hit me with actually hurt!" "Yeah, Davey, I was trying to get you into the right mind for the rest of the match!" "I get that... but those kicks still actually hurt!"

You have to bear in mind that the world of wrestling has changed/evolved A LOT since the early 90s, it's not just the internet age and the death of kayfabe that has affected things. This ppv was from the days before we had regular ladder matches, let alone things like TLC, Hell In A Cell and Elimination Chamber. It's tough to impress fans after they've gotten used to seeing all of that craziness.

Watch this match and Warrior's work from the previous couple of months. He looked awesome. The Summerslam outfit does nothing to hide his physique, and he didn't always wear it. It was just something he was wearing on and off during that period. Yes, when he first came back at Wrestlemania, he was a bit smaller, but that was because he simply had not been working out as much until shortly before that match. If he was taking HGH during his '92 run, I'd say it was working pretty well. These photos would have been taken not long after Summerslam. i.pinimg.com/originals/b6/f6/7e/b6f67ebd5885d36717dd4b6f305333ab.jpg pbs.twimg.com/media/DqHrezwW4AAjMQ4.jpg

Summerslam 1992 is also notable as the first ever WWF pay-per-view to be 100% Hulk Hogan-free. He had main-evented Wrestlemania VIII earlier that year in a horrible match against Sid. The match was billed as being Hogan's retirement match (LOL); the Ultimate Warrior returned at the end of the show to save Hogan from Sid and a very tardy Papa Shango. Hogan had wrestled at every WWF pay-per-view prior to Summerslam 1992, which includes the one-off shows like "No Holds Barred: The Match/The Movie" and "This Tuesday in Texas".
