Andre the Giant is such a tragic figure. We all know that he should have quit straight after this match instead of continuing; but wrestling was his life. He was worried that the moment he quit that he would have literally nothing left to live for and supposedly Vince McMahon realised this which is why he let the guy continue to wrestle. Probably the nicest thing the guy has ever done for one of his employees tbh.

A funny thing about Adrian Adonis. Yes, he gained a LOT of weight. Yes, he got a humiliating gimmick, but he also had a pretty good push. He was in a highly-featured match at this Wrestlemania and he won at Wrestlemania 2. In between, he had some high-profile feuds and he was picked to host the Flower Shop when Piper was away. Steamboat was screwed. It wasn't described in the video but his reign wasn't long because Steamboat asked for time off because of the birth of his son. Vince didn't want Steamboat to take time off but said he would only give it to him if he dropped the belt because Vince didn't want the IC belt to lay dormant for so long. Butch Reed was supposed to win the belt but he went AWOL the day of TV taping he was supposed to beat Stramboat. In a scramble to find a new champ Hulk Hogan was with Vince and pointed to Honky Tonk Man and said "what about him?" Rumor is that Honky wasn't supposed to have the belt long and was supposed to be a transitional champ and drop it to Jake Roberts where he would then feud with Ted DiBiase but Jake was out for several months due to his neck injury. Honky ended up holding the belt for 15 months, which was all by accident and never originally planned.

@@Thundarr100 Sure they did. There is a video on KZbin of Andre being slammed and some were from the mid 80's. Edit: Anonio Inoki and Otto Wanz did it one year prior but Inoki's looked like crap. Worse than Luger's slam on Yokozuna.
@Thundarr1003 жыл бұрын
@@119Agent But one year prior to Wrestlemania 3 Andre wasn't as heavy, nor as immobile, as he was when he faced Hogan in The Silverdome. Andre had easily gained 20 or 30 pounds within that year. Also, the bodyslam is a cooperative move. The wrestler being slammed has to jump up in order for the person slamming him to be able to lift him up. I was a pro wrestler for a few years when I was younger. One of the other wrestling students was much bigger than me, outweighing me by a good 50 pounds or so, yet I was able to slam him with ease because he gave himself a good boost when I was picking him up. There was another student who was smaller than me that I outweighed by about 20 pounds, yet I could barely get him up and over because he never gave himself a strong enough boost (he quit after I bloodied his nose as a receipt for always ducking his shoulder whenever he was about to get clotheslined or chopped). When you watch Wrestlemania 3, you can clearly see Andre getting a running start towards Hogan in order to try and give himself as much of a boost as he possibly could, yet Hogan still had to muscle him up and over in order to slam him because Andre just couldn't jump anymore like he used to. Which makes Hogan's slam of Andre even more impressive.

The added touch at the end? Randy didn't tell Elizabeth what the match's outcome would be. He wanted her reaction to be genuine. Randy's loss not only meant worry for his manager, but is also meant uncertainty for Randy and Elizabeth's future in the WWF. As far as WWF Intercontinental title matches as a whole are concerned, on the other hand, the Randy "The Macho Man" Savage/Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat match from 'WWF WrestleMania 3' is #1, in my opinion.

@@dannycruz5446 I agree. With any of these reviews you miss the TV and house show build ups that occur. I though Macho Man was turning face at WrestleMania III because it was clear he was extremely over and was getting cheered already.

Piper was such a good improv artist. Also I love how Brian says that it's not like more trash is being thrown in while in that exact clip a piece of trash is being thrown at the ring and hits Volkoff in the back, it's hysterical.

WM 3 was a great show. I agree that not every match was A+, but each one of them told stories and I thought the work rate was pretty high overall. Also, the crowd was pumped the entire time. Lastly, Monsoon and Ventura are among the best salesmen ever!

FYI Jesse was "announced" on PPV's and poses for the camera because it gave him performer payout instead of announcer payout and that was part of his contract at the time. No idea why they couldn't just pay him more as an announcer but I guess the PPV payouts were related specifically to what your role was. So I guess Jesse got paid more than Pat or Goulet did.

One minor correction, Z-Man. You said that The Honky Tonk Man attacking Jake "The Snake" with the guitar was what turned Jake babyface. I saw that Snake Pit interview on TV when it happened. Jake had already been a babyface for about a month by that point. He actually turned babyface on the November 1986 Saturday Night's Main Event, when he challenged "Macho Man" Randy Savage for the Intercontinental Championship. The match started out heel vs heel, but about half way through the match the crowd started cheering for Jake "The Snake". By the end of the match he was a babyface. Not quite as dramatic as turning face because someone hit you from behind with a guitar, but that is how it actually happened.

I remember that match, and it was pretty intriguing that Roberts was starting to get cheers during the match. I'm not certain why, unless Macho Man was so hated at that time that the people needed someone to cheer for.
@Thundarr1002 жыл бұрын
@@DaDitka I think that people were less put off by Jake dumping Damien onto his opponents after beating them than they were by Macho Man's mistreatment of Liz. It's just a theory but it makes as much sense as anything else I can think of.
@Thundarr1002 жыл бұрын
@@DaDitka early in the match Jesse “The Body” Ventura said something along the lines of: “We’re about to have two renowned rule breakers go at it. I’m curious how the fans are going to side with this match.” To which McMahon replied “I would suggest maybe The Macho Man”. I think that it might have been Vince’s intention to turn Macho Man babyface during the match, but the fans decided to go the other way and cheer Jake “The Snake” instead. So he decided to just roll with it. Actually very early in the match it kinda looked like it was the plan to turn Macho Man babyface. Jake started intimidating Elizabeth with Damien and Macho Man actually chose to be chivalrous and defend her. But then Jake turned Damien on Macho Man and he decided to hide behind Elizabeth . . . again. So yeah, if I had to guess why Jake “The Snake” became the babyface and not The Macho Man, that would be why. The fans decided their fates, not the boss.

Al Snow once said that a match quality derives from how many people pay to see it, and that Hogan vs Andre was better than Steamboat vs Savage because more people paid to see it. By that logic, does that mean that Al Snow has never had a good match in his career?

I do not know if I've told this story on here before. If I have, apologies in advance. The Jake Roberts vs. Honky Tonk Man match actually has a really interesting story for me. I actually won Alice Cooper tickets because I knew about that match's existence. A radio show was doing a "answer the question" thing. Question was "What Wrestlemania did Alice Cooper appear at and who did he accompany to the ring?" So yeah, always a fun memory that this show gives me.
