Wriothesley really does have a dark past, it's kinda crazy how both Wrio and Neuvillette have such dark backstories, a Melusine suicide over an accusation, and then killing your adopted parents, sheesh Genshin isn't all wholesome and colorful rainbows anymore, even now I'm hearing the word "pissed" here too 💀💀
@Starnight_Sky Жыл бұрын
This is just my opinion, but I feel Genshin always had this "dark side" to it, it was just way less obvious. Like, Venti's story quest is quite dark and same thing goes for Cyno's story quest. But, you could argue those are more sad and less dark. But, Fontaine is 100% the darkest nation and with Natland and Snezhnaya coming up, I'm curious how dark this game will get.

Probably because Wriothesley's case reminded him of his friend Vautrin killing people for what they did to Carole. It's very similar. So Neuvi just got memories from the past and stayed silent. Also it's more depressing to think that a teenager would resort to such a method out of desperation

I think every nation contradicted itself at some point. Mondstadt, the city of freedom, had to fight for their freedom in the first place. + They still worship a god, almost more than every other nation. Even the God of freedom, Venti, isn't free because he's being watched by the heavenly principals. Liyue, city of contracts, doesn't even have a god anymore. Morax knew his nation could thrive on his own, so he faked his death (RIP to his friends cause like he didn't even tell them before hand or something lmao). Weirdly enough, Liyue is more "free" than the city of freedom. The similarity tho is both Venti and Zhongli can't say anything about the cataclysm because their bound to something. We all know about Inazuma. Ei, while fighting for eternity to protect her nation, broke Inazuma apart. The fatui wormed their way in and killed like half of Watatsumi island with delusions, people were losing their ambitions, battles and war broke out, it was just a mess. Sumeru's biggest problem was its own people. Up until then, the problems were caused by other/their own gods, or some catastrophic event (Like Fontaine). The people of wisdom weren't even close to understanding the meaning of wisdom, and hurt their own god trying to figure it out. I love this game so much 😭

@maxireigl1919 Жыл бұрын
The theme of humanity's relation to the divine is almost a through-line for all the nations, isn't it? In Mondstadt, Venti decided to let his people live without divine interference. The people of Mondstadt still worship Barbatos, but their god is distant and absent Liyue is a story of a people's emancipation from their Archon, and the dawn of a new human era. Even in Inazuma, when the Shogun caused the nation harm, some people decided to take up arms against their god. In Sumeru, though the Sages chose to entrust their fate to a god, it was a god they chose, not the one who ruled their nation by "birthright". In Fontaine, with doom on the horizon and the Archon seemingly at her wit's end, the people go their own ways. And, of course, there's Khaenri'ah, the nation that never had a god to begin with.

We were against Childe, Signora, Scara and Dottore. Sure we're friends with Childe and Wanderer/Scara now but not then when everything was happening but with Arlacchino? My jaw dropped during that cutscene near the end only to drop again when I heard his backstory. My respect for this man just skyrocketed.
@BeatrizViana13 Жыл бұрын
His backstory explains a lot about his view on the convicted criminals, he better than anyone knows that when pushed to a certain point most people would commit a crime, so he sees everyone in the prison has “people” and not just “criminals” he doesn’t let a person’s crime cloud his judgment because he knows good people break the laws in desperate situations, a less extreme example would be a poor family stealing food to feed their kids, yes stealing is a crime, but no decent parent wants to see their children starve. (i think the same for people who just need food for themselves as well, but using kids as an example evokes a lot more sympathy in general) Of course if he discovers that someone committed a heinous crime for selfish and cruel reasons then he would give that person the suitable punishment, case in case in point: Dougier. Plus it makes so much sense that Neuvi stayed quiet during Wrio’s trial, little by little Neuvilette realised that the “justice” he had to follow was extremely unfair and that the Oratrice would judge the crime independently of the reasoning. Some people were “following the laws” while committing vile acts, some people broke the law to protect others. Laws are not just, even in real life and there’s no way to fix that, even if exceptions were made for the good people, the bad people would find a loophole and get the same treatment. It’s best in my opinion to lock up good people than to free the bad ones… or at least logically it is, cuz it sure hurts to admit it out loud.

it didn't hit me until just now but i had genuinely wondered why Wriothesley's file from (now we know) when he was a teen was even out when we were looking up things that might connect to a crime/threat to melusines. i know not everyone watches the dev streams so i initially thought it was a way for them to hint to those players that he had something in his past. but now i realize that more than that, it literally connects because like Vautrin was sentenced, Wriothesley was convicted because he "took the law into his own hands" sort of thing by handling things the way he did. right down to his reasoning likely being a mix of revenge and wanting to remove the threat from the picture. I wonder if like with his friend's case, he was put under pressure to say he was innocent, or perhaps just personally unsure if conviction was truly "right" in Wriothesley's case. this also adds an extra layer to the fact that it's Wriothesley who reveals the real reason why Vautrin doubled down on his act to ensure people would see that just because he was close to Neuvillette, he wouldn't let his bias stop him from a conviction. personally, i'm still more connected to Sumeru, but gosh they really upped their game in the writing with the subtleties in Fontaine. i know they existed before but this is really just cool to see

It was *alot* and definitely a step up from other story quests/hidden things. It's something many many people can relate too, so a trigger warning (or even just a content warning for manipulation and abuse) would've been fine. I get not wanting spoilers but warnings are there to *warn* so there really isnt a way around it. This is just something to consider for future streams. Honestly, this, the Archon quest and Neuvilette’s quest have convinced me that so far Fontaine and Inazuma are the worst countries by far. In Inazuma, Ei gave the Shogun such ambiguous orders to uphold eternity that it caused a civil war that almost brought the nation to its knees. In Fontaine, you have unground slave markets, child trafficking, the nation literally sentencing people to the bottom of the ocean for even menial crimes, a serial killer who was able to hide for over 20 years and a justice system that turns trial into a spectacle. Fontaine is rotten underneath its flowery appearance and that prophecy is well deserved.

@BranOnline Two things. One, Wriothesley is merely the Warden of Merpoide. He doesn't have the authority to issue Full Pardons to inmates. He would have to ask Neuvillette for that. Except for the Melusines (and maybe Furina), Wriothesley knows Neuvillette better than anyone else in Fontaine so he knows better than to even consider asking Neuvillette because Neuvillette, even if he wanted to do it, would decline because the law dictates that all convicted felons are to complete their sentences. The best Wriothesley can do for those poor souls is to make sure that their lives in Meropide are as comfortable as he can make them, within reason. Also, let's not forget that Meropide has Sigewinne. Honestly? I think she's the best person in Fontaine to be taking care of these people after what they've been through. Besides, where else could be safer for these people than under the watchful gaze of Wriothesley? He's now personally invested in each and every one of them. In all honesty, if I had a choice between leaving Meropide to deal with the Overworld where I don't know who to trust or living the rest of my life in Meropide where, yes, I'll have to deal with PTSD, but I know that if anything happens, Wriothesely will intervene... I would choose Meropide. I mean, I can't feel much safer than knowing if someone messes with me, they're liable to get a Cryo Fist to the face. This leads into the second thing: I don't think Neuvillette hesitated during Wriothesley's Trial because Wriothesley was a kid. As some people have already mentioned, I think he hesitated because Wriothesley reminded him of Vautrin. Both the cases were, basically, the same. Evil Jackasses mistreated and, potentially, killed innocents close to the killer so the killer decided to take justice in their own hands to ensure the Evil Jackasses could never harm anyone ever again. What Neuvillette said to Vautrin also applies to Wriothesley: "What you did could be considered a form of Justice." I also think this is why Neuvillette places so much faith in Wriothesley and why he's become friends with Wriothesley. He noticed the same sense of Justice within Wriothesley that had sensed within Vautrin 400 years prior. He knew Wriothesley was a good kid and he saw Wriothesley as a chance to rectify a mistake he made 400 years prior: Not following up on Vautrin after he sent him to Meropide. Seriously, put Neuvillette's Story Quest and Wriothesley's Story Quest next to each other and tell me you can't see Vautrin doing the exact same thing to Dougier that Wriothesley did if her were in Wriothesley's position. Also, compare the Mutual Aid Network with how Wriothesley runs Meropide. How Vautrin ran the Mutual Aid Network was, practically, the blueprint for how Wriothesley would come to run The Fortress of Meropide.

Wriothesely is honestly terrifying when you realise that as a kid - he beat his adoptive parents to death WITHOUT A VISION. That guy was lucky all he got was a choke and slam into the floor! Honestly made me love him all the more because of just how much strength and restraint he'd shown for the sake of helping those who can't help themselves. One of my favourite characters in Fontaine.

given Wriothesleys dark past i totally can see him and Arlechinno getting along given what we know about what the knave did with the house of hearth definitely a good character quest regardless. Something that bothers me so much with Fontaine is that Furina has so many laws and rules that can get people sent to jail for stupid things. Yet as long as a person plays by the books they can get a way with far worse things then eating ketchup straight from the bottle. These rules are really good for nothing if child trafficking is so common.

That's literally the theme of the game at this point. City of Freedom, yet everyone is chained to their past. City of Commerce, yet its history is filled with sacrifice. Land of Thunder and Eternity, yet stuck in a stagnant state. Land of wisdom, yet the entire governing body are ignorant fools. So it's natural that the Land of Justice will have the most atrocities.

@bookswithike3256 Жыл бұрын
@@vermilion6966 No, you're just not paying attention to the lore of the game. All I stated was a fact. The Fortress of Meropide was founded by exiles from Fontaine, i.e. they are not in Fontaine anymore, and therefore not subject to its laws, and the administrator of the fortress is considered the executive authority there. Wriothesley chooses to be a fair and just leader, but the previous administrator certainly was not. And Wriothesley said himself he could have killed Dougier if he wanted. Pay attention next time. Do such things apply in the real world? I would certainly hope not. But this isn't real life, this is a game.

@@bookswithike3256 your arrogance and idiocy doesnt justify the fact that the boss of the prison threatens people with death. I felt like something was a little... "lost" during the story... because he reveals everything at the end, like Out of nowhere. I thought it would be like Baizhu's mission... with more details and more stories about the character himself. Even Neuvillette's legendary mission had more things about him, than Wriothesley's mission which had less things about him. Leading me to think that maybe there is a 2nd mission. Because the mission simply ended without an "ending" I would say.
@lemonbunny71 Жыл бұрын
The ending felt kinda abrupt in a way. But Hoyo tried to keep all their storyquests around the same length (roughly 1 1/2 hours) so maybe they run out of time and had to keep the ending short. That being said, I really hope we get a "part 2" for his storyquest. (Actually I'm pretty sure most characters will get a second storyquest eventually but I hope we don't have to wait suuuper long for it to happen)
@taiyonohikari1346 Жыл бұрын
It's not out of nowhere, he won't reveal his past if it's not because the traveler asked him and the reason why the traveler asked him is because of his reaction during this quest. Wriothesley has a trust issue so he won't reveal his past if it's not because of what they are going through together during this quest (That's why when Paimon asked him the first time if he was ex-prisoner or not, his answer was ambiguous). His past before he killed his foster parents, after he killed them, his trial, his life in prison and how he can become warden is all in his character story, so you should see it. On the other hand, if you read only his character story, you won't know who he killed and why so his character story and his quest complement each other. Without ending? I don't know what kind of ending you expect but how I see Wriothesley is that, Fortress of Meropide is his home. In the end, he shows us his determination to protect his home and also see people believe in him enough to stay in Fortress of Meropide. Wriothesley who can't save all of his siblings and has trust issues because of his past but is now able to save all victims in beret society and trusted enough by others who have a similar experience as him in the past is a good ending for a short story like SQ imo. Edit: Also the fact that people who experience something similar to him are still able to trust others because they are saved unlike him in the past. It makes me think he is saving his own past self.

So i don't think the victims deserve to stay in prison as it were after this, but also with *everything* we've seen with Fontaine; Meropide has a *way* better social support system. It seems that's part of why the House of the Hearth has thrived so much, how the state has failed the people.
