as mentioned here, i too started music making by playing mostly chords first, but when i started studying modal forms, it changed my mindset. now, i often allow the chords to "vamp" in the background & focus more on the bassline & melodies. the chords sort of act as a "padding" or foundation, for the bass & melodies to play over. using the other modes besides Major (Ionian) & minor (aeolian), allow for some really cool ideas to be heard.

The verse sounds (to me) like middle-period Beatles, especially the Bm-Bb melody. (Of course, they played around with modal interchange in their songwriting.) I suppose that writing basslines will be pretty much the same as melodies, without as many notes.

It can be, depends what sort of bassline you write. For example, some people use the bass to follow the chord changes.

They are built up over 3 videos, so first I show you the chord progressions, then the melody and finally the riffs. I should probably have made this clearer!
