I am a retired probation/parole officer. One thing I have learned is that there is no such thing as rehabilitation of a repeat offender by any type of counseling or a "good woman's love," The only times I have seen repeat offenders going straight is because, and this is a direct quote, "I got sick of being locked up on Christmas, Thanksgiving, and my birthday."

Agree, except in one case. My grandfather quit the BS when he met my step grandma. Previously he had gone to prison twice (once to San Quentin) and was a general POS, shooting up heroin on the front porch. Got his life together after meeting the woman that he ended up marrying for the rest of his life (40 years)

I remember seeing an Oprah show with a woman with facial burns. She met a guy who was in jail for killing his wife. She thought that, as a Christian, she should give everyone a second chance and that she would give it to him. I don't remember what he poured on her, but she was sitting on the floor with her son when the man poured something on her that resulted in burns. She was able to shield her child. As a Christian myself, I cannot bring myself to believe that I'm the one who has to give criminals their second chance at the risk of my life, finances, or health. Some people cannot be saved - at least not by me.

@amandart for me personally, I was young and naive and "in love" for the first time at 18. I learned really quickly that I cannot change anyone but myself but I've witnessed many more-than-grown women who should know better but STILL insist on "fixing" violent men. I don't think messaging had anything to do with it as it seems women especially have been doing this for decades at a minimum. As a forensic clinician working in the prison system I found it interesting that such violent prisoners received so much fan mail from women and had so many women come to visit them on visiting days. The most violent prisoners actually had groupies, and had cardboard boxes full of fan mail, photos and love letters from women. But female prisoners received no fan mail and few if any male visitors. I find it interesting that men are not attracted to female criminals, but lots of women are attracted to male criminals. It is also interesting that the women attracted to male criminals are mostly smarter than the criminals they are attracted to.

Sometimes it is more about thinking of the child in the man, the one that was broken. They are broken very early (most) if not born that way (few) and in preschool they may already show signs and around age ten or eleven they may show clear signs of being narcissistic or psychopathic that they have lost contact with any true goodness, that the default is to lie, con, and manipulate. It is very difficult beyond that point, I think it would require some type of lobotomy or chemical interference to change them. Teachers and principals can recognize that child throughout their schooling. Some narcissists toy with them.

@@scottfamily5963 it *is* possible with a child to turn that around, if you catch it early.. before puberty. *But* it is damn hard work, and it has to be done with endless patience and love. Thank you for telling us about these crimes. I married a man when I was very young and I didn't know he had been a youth offender and had done time in Lethbridge Canada. His mother let me know about it after we were married. He told me a few stories about people who had died, friends of his. Very early in that marraige he seriously beat me up. Worse than any of that was when our daughter was 9 years old I caught him naked in bed with her. That was the day I told him to leave. Now it has been almost 40 years since that day. Today I am writing a letter to warn the mother of my great grandaughter who was born a few months ago. I hope she will take the information I send to her seriously. Iwarned her of everything and told her never to leave her little daughter alone with him. I'm ashamed of how stupid I was all those years. I admit he was an advanced human who is incredibly good at manipulating others, lying, grooming and forcing them into keeping secrets in order for him to deceive. Still I must have the courage to write to her and try to stop these crimes from continuing in the family through another generation.I remarried many years after my children grew up. I have a good husband now. I've moved away from Canada. I wish I had been able to bring that bad man to justice but it was not possible. My daughters were loyal to their incestuous father. I understand. I have learned that is because it is difficult for children to understand when their abuser is their own Dad. Thanks Dr. Grande for making people more and more aware of how crime works to destroy people and their families. Hopefully with information and knowledge like you provide we will all be able to protect ourselves and others from crime.

Having worked in the state prison for 29 years--5 in a position where I had to scan incoming mail--I could write a book about prison romances. Mysteriously there was a lot of love letters to murderers from Europe and Australia. One inmate that received such letters killed a man to see what it felt like, then murdered another in the county jail. If these women "with limited choices in men" would put out the same effort on the streets as they do with writing inmates in prison--they could easily find romance where it would benefit them.

A couple of commenters mentioned self-esteem and childhood abuse as a reason to be a bad boy/man magnet and I agree. A pattern of relationships with them shows them picking men who remind them of a childhood abuser in the hopes that this man will love them and the old damaging script can be written. I also had childhood abuse but was terrified of my abusers so I ran a mile from anyone who resembled them. In my rewritten script I’d be free. Canada is a liberal country. They have this mindset that people can be reformed very easily. Look what reform is doing in SF, LA, NYC, Chicago, etc. Canada is now seeing a rise in crime lately, caused by migrants from Somalia. Same with UK, Sweden, Germany, and France. Sweden is now the R capital of Europe since Afghans migrated by the hundreds of thousands. White women in the eyes of their culture should be used as usable objects. Not my words, words of convicted R's caught in Sweden. This is what happens when you think majority of people can be good. Humans are not natural good, we are taught from an early age to be good. Without direction, we are pretty evil. Just look at the youth of Chicago, SF, LA, and NYC. Single parents not giving the time to raise their kids properly.

Speaking from experience... in 2000 I got entangled with a guy whose mother I knew (nice enough lady, apart from the bit where she didn't warn me about her son). He'd been in prison and I thought it was for selling weed. Think Trainspotting, Edinburgh, where I lived at that time: I knew someone who fitted every character in the book/movie, so that didn't seem that bad to me. When the 'honeymoon' period was over he proceeded to terrorize me for the thankfully short duration of a few months before I managed to escape him, mostly physically unscathed, albeit one time he nearly killed me by strangulation. Turned out it was violent assault of an ex, biting her about the face and body. I was nearly physically sick when I discovered what he'd actually done. Oh I thought I was so smart and knew how to play the game. Did I chuff, and I learned the hard way. The mental scars are still healing over 20 years later. I'm not saying everyone who has been in prison is irredeemable, but I'd never entertain that again. There was a happy ending (for me, fuck him and who cares) though: through years of analysis of my own naive ways I got my shit together and finally got with the right guy. If anyone else has been through this kind of thing, know that life can be good.

How does one blatantly strangle a sex worker and end up merely indicted for manslaughter? Did he claim it was an accident during "rough sex" and they didn't have the evidence to prove otherwise? That's the only feasible route I can think of that would allow him to avoid the murder conviction he should've been dealt. Had this been a wife/girlfriend, I highly doubt this would have played out this way. Unfortunately, our justice system doesn't place any value on the lives of sex workers and/or drug addicts which opens up the path for nonsense like this. The wackjob should've been locked up for life a long time ago... and these other lives would have been spared.

It occurs to me as if that man would have received a much higher sentence in the first place if the first woman he killed wasn't a sex worker but a well respected member of society. Not only are sex workers poorly protected and oftentimes not taken seriously when reporting a crime they were the victim of, but also being harmed at that job, like assaulted, beaten, robbed, or killed, seems to be considered occupational hazard one should be aware of when "choosing" this line of work ("choosing" because many people working as sex workers only do so because they are under the impression of not actually having another choice). In this respect committing a crime against a sex worker is more likely to be viewed as accidental, or at least not as serious as committing the same crime against someone working in a less dangerous occupation, like hunting grizzly bears, or defusing bombs.

The only thing I can add to it is that there's a human phenomenon that deserves to be called "para-suicide" - something that applies to both cases like this one as well as "accidental" overdoses by long-term drug abusers.
