I agree. It's not as densely sweet as sherry but still gives similar flavors, so I'm not surprised that finishing in Cognac casks resulted in a more subtle impact than finishing in sherry or wine casks. For something as light, pretty and easily overwhelmed as Irish whisky, Cognac might actually be a really wise choice.

Sachin Kainth was so excited, thought they were reviewing cognac for a second. Armagnac is my personal fav. Darroze does some insane single farm distilling, some crazy single casks, cask strength.

Somewhere between the Titans intro and the skullet I realized I would never be able to share this video with a friend that wasn't already familiar with the channel and be able to convince that friend that you guys know what you are talking about when it comes to whiskey. Somewhere along the way the silliness that is the Tribe content seems to overcome the Vault content and in the process may be harming the ability of the Vault content to spread to the wider populous that isn't already part of the Tribe.

So cognac is a brandy made from grapes (in Cognac, France). As you would expect from that, and as you discovered, you can get a lot of fruity elements from that, the same as in wine. Typically, cognac will lean less fresh and more cooked and darker tasting just because of the process.

Glad to see you back guys.....you`ve been missed. On Cognac as others have suggested dark fruits come to the fore, although I get lighter fruits also with some of the VSOP`s. I really enjoy Martell Cordon Bleu & although it`s not listed as an XO it`s as good as one with probably stronger flavours than most XO`s which would be better suited to whiskey drinkers IMHO. Another even better choice might be Hine XO Cigar Reserve, this could well be Dan`s cognac of choice for obvious reasons, I get dark fruits & grape skin tannins, flavours that are present in one or two Grappa`s I`ve tried too.

Also aged in French oak, so rather than the sweet spice, vanilla, and light fruity notes of American oak, you're getting cocoa/coffee and dry/savory spices.
@kopasedik4 жыл бұрын
@@burkeredh I must second the leather note for cognac - for me it's like a less fruity brandy (or at least, less of the berries you get in brandy, and more like dried peaches or apricots).
@Mopsink4 жыл бұрын
I used to drink primary XO Cognac's until my back account started a revolt. to answer the question of what it brings to the table in terms of flavors. Cognac brings forward a lot of the same flavors that you see in wine and just like a wine it all depends on the type of aging, grape, barrel, and how long the Cognac was aged to influence the flavor. I've never had this brand before so I cannot so I cannot give any tasting notes for Deau XO.

I find that cognac and brandy in general adds a lot of notes of sweet, fleshy fruit. Think sweet apricots, plums, and peaches. Often so sweet as if they had been marinaded in sugar and then submerged in the liquor, only having been being taken out just before you sip the dram.

Cognac tastes like dried fruit, like that really strong fruit flavor without the sugar. Don't know what it does to whiskey though. I find when spirits are finished in casks that had a different spirit in it before the effect is more subtle.

Hi, Magnificent Bastards. I'm relatively new in whisky and I wanna share an experience I had. One of the first single malt I tried was Highland Park 12 Viking Honour and I really like it. Then, a few weeks ago, I bought a Macallan 12 Triple Cask Matured. Since the first time, I've sense a very intense rubbery smell in the Macallan. And now I go back to that Highland Park and find that same rubbery smell, that I hadn't picked up before, although more sutile that the Macallan. I even find a tiny hint of this rubber in my Lagavulin 16. Is it something in HP12 and Lagavulin that I just hadn't picked up before? Is it something wrong with my whisky? With my nose?

I highly recommend adding a cap of Writer's Tears to a cup of mild black tea (like an English Breakfast); the whiskey makes it explode with the strongest banana bread flavors. I think Writer's Tears is definitely hiding some more complex notes.

I follow this channel since the times of only Daniel with his solo advent calender back in 2016 and the Tribe channel since the birth of it. Love you both but in that era where you were only bringing weird bourbons onto the table, I stopped watching this channel because I can bearly get Jefferson's here in Portugal, let along craft Michigan distilleries. But I glad we are back into most mainstream brands like Deanston and now Irish whiskey. Nothing against the craft distilleries but not being able to get the whisky and compare the notes with you guys is part of why I loved this channel in the first place. Keep up the good work and thank you for keeping us entertained in these dark times we live in. PS: Does the Titan intro needs to be this big? Like It's cool the first 5 times, after that, I'm looking for the arrows on my TV remote to jump the animation.

Hey whisky tribe/vault, just curious would you ever do videos on rum or anything else? Love your whiskey content and whisky it’s self but I’m a rum guy, to me it just seems like whiskey that can very even more due to a lack of restrictions; if you guys made a video explaining the difference it would be absolutely amazing, even to see you compare vodkas or something. Karl (Porter) has it right, and much like Champagne, in order for a spirit to be a true cognac it has to come from the Cognac region of France. I believe it is also grape specific w/particular aging in oak requirements not dissimilar to bourbon.
