Writing For Screens

Күн бұрын

Every weekday (as much as I can) I'm gonna be on LIVE at 3pm PST - open for questions - ASK ME (ALMOST) ANYTHING!
But also I’ll be:
Working on a script, every day - explaining the process step-by-step. I'll be taking you with me as I build a project...from a few lines of a rough idea into an outline and maybe even a pilot script.
You DON’T NEED to watch them IN ORDER! You DON’T NEED to watch them ALL!
Just drop in to learn about the mechanics and reality of WRITING A PILOT SCRIPT.
Today: working on Hugo’s character...and trying to find a new damn name for Hugo.
WANT TO ASK A QUESTION but you’re not watching live? You can do it!!
Ask it here in the comments section of this video!

See you at 3 today, Mr G ✌🏻 PS Your first "hello, screenwriters" greeting this episode! Now I look forward to the first "Go write something"

Haha! Thank you, Nathan! Repaired. How funny: I had forgotten I didn't have a routine down yet and didn't open or close the same way... :)

Hi Glenn, I’m so glad I found you! I’m stuck with this series and can’t wait to see the following videos and the progress of the story. Thank you for sharing your process of writing with us 🙏 and by the way the pad definitely helps with the keyboards noise but I personally love the sound of keys being pressed.. it’s like ASMR for writers :)

I know I’m late to the party. Like those videos a LOT, thanks for coming up with the writing in public idea! On the typing noise and other rumbles: In your recording software, maybe you can set up a high pass filter at 30 Hz? That might kill a lot of the unwanted low noises.

Thanks - I am not very good with audio, I know. Will look into that for future videos.

Wonderful - I'm so glad you're getting into it. That's the most important thing: getting something down on the page. Small steps, you'll figure it out as you go along! Best of luck -

For me, the keyboard's sound was not an issue in previous episodes (it's actually part of the experience, I would say :p ). With the pad, it's perfect.

I'm loving this. Had to stop and comment. Right now, you named your main character (who, by other characters, must be considered as the possible killer) "Norman." I'm thinking....is this a tease...naming a possible serial killer "Norman" which would instantly bring to mind "Norman Bates" or is this where your humor will come in? I'll have to wait and see if his last name is one syllable and starts with a "B", or perhaps rhymes with Bates. So enjoyable! Thank you...on to finish this one and go to the next.

Ha - I think it was a subconscious echo. Especially as Norman is on the detective side more than the killer side. I was more groping for "old guy" names.

Hi Glenn, just to understand. You first type everything you come up with in a document called NOTES and then copy it (not moving it) to either CHARACTERS, THEMES or OUTLINE? But still leaving everything also in OVERVIEW, no?
@d.m.l.145

i mean NOTES not OVERVIEW ...
@writingforscreens
@writingforscreens 3 жыл бұрын
@@d.m.l.145 I think of it less a prescribed pattern of steps, and more of setting up SPACES to work in: I type new material all over the place - when it comes into my head, I write it down. The NOTES doc is simply: a place to talk to myself. I rarely look back at it: I just use it as a place to start talking to myself when I don't know what to do next. IF I write down anything remotely useful - I copy that and paste it into the two other more organized work spaces: OVERVIEW - everything that is general or over-arching, everything that is NOT going to be a scene (including characters, themes, etc) OUTLINE - everything that is or will eventually be in a scene If I happen to get to thinking "big picture" while I'm working in the outline - or come up with a scene while I'm working in the overview - it's easy to keep working there to get it down, and then cut-and-paste it over to the other. The idea is to try to sort your thoughts into either Scenes (the stuff that will become the actual text) in the OUTLINE or Big Picture Reminders in the the OVERVIEW. And the NOTES is just a daily blank slate.

Hi! I'm also developing a tv show project together with yours. But I found myself thinking about something. How do I know if my narrative fits better in a series or a movie?
@writingforscreens

A while back, I did a video about that...it's a little long and disorganized, but it might help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZSZgqJuotNqpa8 One of the biggest issues if you want to write a series is: mostly, you only write the pilot and then if a company wants to produce the show you hire a staff and write the rest with them. Will you be satisfied only writing the first episode, if it never gets "picked up"? Other than that: every project is different, so it's hard to say absolutely that any particular element means it ought to be a series or not. Almost any story COULD be either a movie or a series. So: which one do you want to work on? Which one makes sense to you, creatively?

:) Mostly paper from projects I did Before Digital - old scripts, work notes, letters etc. Plus boxes of family photos, and souvenirs, and boxes of spare hardware - old keyboards and headphones etc.
