To clarify, I used the term 'formal footwear' mainly from the perspective of streetwear or mainstream fashion where pretty much any more traditional/classic shoe or boot would be considered 'formal' compared to sneakers. Anyone who is properly into 'real' formal shoes would likely say that no Doc Martens are formal. Essentially I am referring to most shoes that are considered more formal or smarter than sneakers/trainers which are mainly leather shoes and boots but there are obviously some exceptions to that.

That “kinda worn out” factor also adds personalization to the sneakers and that’s pretty cool imo

I urge formal footwear lovers to give leather soles a chance. Good quality leather shoes have leather soles that erode/shape to your walking pattern. They also have cork insoles which literally mold to the shape of your foot after a few wears. Cork also absorbs shock better than rubber does. You can get shoes that have this starting around $200.

I think another thing that killed sneaker culture was the erosion of what originally birthed it: basketball shoes. All the casual/lifestyle sneakers that are popular now are basically all trying to mimic the look of 1980’s-90’s basketball shoes. Companies like Nike and Adidas moved away from using materials like leather to make their shoes to optimize performance. While this does make for lighter, better performing basketball shoes, it totally killed the appeal of wearing them for anything other than playing basketball. Nobody wears Lebrons off the court like Jordans, despite him being one of the famous players, if not people, in the world, because they just simply don’t look as good. Hopefully the hype around Anthony Edwards’ shoes and Devin Booker’s signature shoes being made to look nice on and off the court can help revive the culture.
@gilbertoflores73973 ай бұрын
Anthony Edwards shoes look like hardcore basketball/performance shoes. And the Book1 looks like knockoff AF1. No one is wearing them casually. But you definitely make a point, most athlete's shoes aren't shoes you can wear casually anymore, and that's had a big impact on the sneaker world. Especially since durability and all year versatility is a factory for parents buying their kids shoes. You cant be wearing fabric shoes in the winter.

Basically, the trend is kind of similar in idea to how boat shoes were the thing back in 2011, and sneaker culture was basically dead for like a year and some time, but people still wore sneakers. The mainstream norm changes every year tbf, but generally people have been wearing smart shoes like Tabis or prada derbys or even doc martens with Needles track pants, shirt trackies t shirt trackies, or a wide pleated pants for years. It’s like in 2018-late 2019, I started getting into hikercore, because of rave culture at the time in London, and festival and then it suddenly got huge and very mainstream, and now it’s basically dead, but the whole functionality of all those pieces during winter months or on a sporadic rotation like during the spring is still useful. TLDR you can wear formal shoes with casual outfits but you can't wear casual shoes with formal wear. This therefore proves that overpriced plastic Jordans are an inferior purchase as opposed to equally priced made-to-measure shoes that will last you several resoles and potentially up to a decade or more. Go figure. Functionally fancy > fashionably disposable.
@TheFatNooblet3 ай бұрын
Depends on the shoes and the outfit. Jordan 1’s can last you decades as well, one of the only Jordans that are built so simple that they can last. But the only good Jordan 1’s are the original 1985 colors, those are timeless - not the endless milking of the new colors. But you’re right you can’t wear sneakers with formal wear-like a tuxedo or dinner jacket. But you can wear sneakers business casually/a little dressed up-depending on the sneaker. Anyway, this is coming from someone who wears loafers, derbys and sneakers- and used to be a designer shoe salesperson at a high end department store. But the only sneakers I wear are Chicago 1s, Air Max 90 and Black Cement 3s. My formal shoes vary from Ferragamo, Allen Edmonds, Gucci, hell ALD too. So glad sneaker hype is dying though, too many people hopped on who just want to make a buck or fit in. Variety is the spice of life!

Formal shoes are dead. They are very uncomfortable. There is a reason why they are practically extinct. There is even a study that links bad footwear to leg injuries and pains. No formal shoe except for Doc Martens give you shock protection so whenever you jump or run, all that impact goes directly to your legs. Add the fact that these formal formals are badly designed to the point that it leaves your feet in a shape that enhances any pressure or impact to your feet. What's the point of being functionally fancy when your feet are in pain? Move on. Let formal shoes die. There's a reason why everyone uses sneakers. Made to measure shoes are hot garbage. There's no way it is better performing than a sweatshop formal shoes 😂. In fact sneakers are cheaper and often better. The reason they break is because people actually wear them down to pieces. I still got an OG Ultraboost 1 and it is still comfortable, obviously not as comfortable as the newest ultraboost but still far better than leather shoes.
