Tim Curry is a familiar and much-loved face if you’re a child of the eighties or nineties. First breaking out playing Dr. Frank N. Furter in the musical stage show The Rocky Horror Show, when it transitioned to the big screen, Curry was a natural to reprise his role. The resulting film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, was only a mild success, but a crazy cult sprang up around the movie that’s earned it a place in history. As it stands, it’s arguably the biggest cult film of all time, and it holds a record for the longest theatrical run of any movie, with it continually in theatrical release since its 1975 debut. Halloween revivals of the movie are a beloved tradition, and the film would not have it's staying power were it not for Curry’s showstopping turn.
It kicked off an interesting career for Curry, with him initially specializing in villains. He made an unforgettable Darkness in Ridley Scott’s Legend and Rooster in John Huston’s Annie. He also began making significant in-roads in comedy, playing the slick butler Wadsworth in the beloved Clue. In the nineties, he began to specialize as a character actor in movies like The Hunt for Red October, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, Muppet Treasure Island (as Long John Silver) and more. Yet, it’s there’s a role he’s remembered for other than Frank N. Furter; it’s Pennywise the Clown in the iconic TV movie version of IT. His Pennywise haunted many children's dreams, including most of us here at JoBlo.
In recent years, the beloved star has been sidelined by a major stroke which has confined him to voice acting. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity (written by Brad Hamerly, produced and narrated by Taylor James Johnson and edited by Kier Gomes) we examine Curry’s life and legacy.
What’s your favorite Tim Curry role? Let us know in the comments!

Tim Curry unfortunately will leave us one day without ever getting an oscar nomination. I always put him on par with the late and great Alan Rickman; who also left without ever getting a single oscar nomination. Criminally underrated actors indeed😢

I had the utmost pleasure of meeting Tim a few times. Despite his struggles, he's still doing voiceovers and continues to meet with his fans, either virtually or in-person. Don't ever worry about Tim losing his sparkle; his trauma doesn't define him. Despite his physical struggles, he's still the same man that flows against the currents of life with grace and great discernment. Tim still has a great singing voice as well; I hope he gets to make that album he still wishes to make. ❤️✨

@@beckigreen Lol!! I never said that I was a personal friend of his, ma'am, nor would I ever lie about Tim. I merely said that I met him a few times; doesn't mean I have a close relationship with him. For me personally, I find the ableism of some people quite appalling. You'd be amazed at how many people think Tim is a retired celebrity with his talent worn-out, heading out to pasture because he can't walk nor dance like he used to. It's not that hard to figure out he's a person that deserves respect and not unreasonable assumptions because of his career. Quite frankly, I'm beyond sick of people, such as yourself, who think people revolve around you and your expectations. So I must thank you from the bottom of my heart for making a complete ass out of yourself. I enjoyed it immensely. 😘🖕🏻

@@mildredwhite Chill, she wasn't accusing other generations of NOT appreciating him. She's bringing up how many kids' movies he was in despite all his classical training. I'm late Gen X, so I also saw and loved his performances in movies that were VERY different from Rocky Horror and his long theater career. Not many actors are really beloved much outside their own generation, but apparently even Millennials still got a chance to adore his performances long before being old enough to appreciate his most famous performances. Gen Z has probably still missed out though, poor things.

@@ITIsFunnyDamnIT I can understand why King wanted to make it a feature film, while he was still alive. It was a great story. I personally much prefer the TV mini-series. I liked the cast a lot better. Obviously the CGI for the film was much better, but that ensemble cast for the TV mini-series, especially Tim Curry, was A-MAZING! The cast for the movie was ok. There were a couple of standouts, including Bill Hader, and that red-hair teenage girl. And the new Pennywise was good. But I did not think he was anywhere near as good as Tim Curry. But I'm probably biased. Not everyone has to have the same tastes in art and/or appreciate the same things. I thought both movies were great, but I did much prefer the TV mini-series.

About 10 years later, my husband and I had just moved into a new place in Los Angeles and decided to go for a walk and check out the neighborhood. We walked into the local bookstore and there was Tim Curry, reading aloud from "A Wrinkle in Time". 🥰 BTW, if you can get your hands (or, well, ears) on a copy of "The Wordsmiths at Gordsmere" it's well worth a listen. It was produced for BBC Radio 4 a number of years ago, and it's a lot of fun. TC is part of an amazing cast.

I once had the pleasure to see Tim Curry in person, though I didn't meet him personally, during his filming of Psych. It was in this big theater in a casino in Coquitlam, British Columbia and during the periods between filming where they were setting up things like the lights and stage, he was there, on stage, doing an impromptu Q&A with the audience, and the incredible charisma of Tim Curry held the entire audience like we were under a spell, and in a way we were. Many years later after his stroke, I recall seeing a video clip of Tim Curry at a relatively recent Fan Convention where he was answering questions regarding his performance in "It" and even after his stroke, it was so clear his wit, charm and charisma were still there, and he was still easily able to charm the crowd despite his post-stroke condition. He's such an international treasure and a gift to the arts.

Sometimes we say about an actor "I could watch him read the phone book". This is Tim Curry for me. I genuinely loved Oscar, watched every episode of Earth2, and am bitterly disappointed we did not get to see Tim Curry and Daryl Hannah's Gomez and Morticia in a well written show, or a worthy Addams Family 3 film. JoBlo truly did the man justice in this fantastic video, and I'm impressed they even mentioned stuff like his fantastic trio of albums, and less known work like Time Square, a true cult classic.

He should have won an Oscar for Legend at least. Tim Curry sang Professional Pirates live and nailed it in one take so the Muppets now use live singing rather than lip sync. Criminal Minds makes me scared of him then Family Affair comes along. You can see he's a very intelligent, quiet, charming and gracious person. Russell Brand was out sexually undertoned by him. If that doesn't deserve an award by itself then idk what does lol

Hearing just how much Curry enjoyed working on 'Muppets Treasure Island' makes me so happy! Not only was it one of my childhood favs, but speaking as someone who's also read the book; he should be proud too! His portrayal of Silver is the closest I've seen to maching the description. But I love everything he's done! We miss ya, buddy! =)

I love Tim Curry. I'm so happy to know that Muppet Treasure Island is his favorite movie he's been in, because it's mine as well. He was also, in my opinion, one of the most terrifying killers on Criminal Minds. I don't remember many of them specifically, but I remember him. What a great actor!

Long John Silver was Tim's favorite role? That's such a pleasant surprise, it's my favorite role of his too! Long John does dastardly things, but he's still a human, and there's a heart under all of that greed for gold. Listening to him speak, sing, do anything in that movie still makes me smile.

He certainly did make an impact! I love his albums. Simplicity is wonderful. And I have to say that his most important film to me will always be Times Square. That's the Timmeh cult I'm in. Those of us who found that movie in its original release were truly changed by it. My favorite performance is Wadsworth in Clue. He swiped that flick out from under everyone else in it. And I absolutely adore Pass The Ammo. It's hilarious and deserved a much bigger audience. Another highlight of his career for me was his audiobook reading of Anne Rice's Cry To Heaven. It's incredible. If you're a fan and you've never listened to it, find it. Not kidding. You can thank me later.
